Typically British Reading Challenge 2010
I have seen a few challenges that are limited to reading authors from a particular country (Canada/Australia) etc but none for just Britain, so I thought I would host one myself. I hope you enjoy the challenge and discover lots of new British authors along the way. Button and guidelines are below.

Timeline: 1st Jan 2010~ 31st Dec 2010. Only books started on January 1st count towards this challenge.
Details:
1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.
2. There are four levels:
• "Put The Kettle On" – Read 2 Typically British novels.
• "Gordon Bennett" – Read 4 Typically British novels.
• "Bob's Your Uncle" – Read 6 Typically British novels.
• "Cream Crackered" – Read 8 Typically British novels.
3. Any book format counts. Must be fiction not non-fiction.
4. You don't have to select your books ahead of time, you can just add them as you go. Also if you do list them upfront then you can change them, nothing is set in stone!
5. The books you choose can crossover into other challenges.
6. If you decide to participate in this challenge please use the link I have set up below with the button to post on your sidebar, this way others can find their way back to this post and join in the fun.
7. If you decide to join this challenge be sure to create a post telling others, please make sure you add a link back to this post so others can join in.
8. There will be a place for you to link your reviews, but this is optional.
9. Obviously only British authors count!
BUTTON
When you sign up under Mr. Linky, please add the direct URL of your post about the Typically British Reading Challenge. This way other participants can read about your progress and give support.

Just what I was thinking about. I kept reading about all these challenges from other countries and nothing to recommend old Blighty. I will definitely be joining in with this one.
I'll definitely be participating, but I'll wait to link up in Mr. Linky until I've posted my 2010 challenges list! :)

Well, you got me! I wasn't going to sign up for any challenges but I succumbed to two already and this one is just too good to pass up. Thanks for hosting and coming up with the clever levels. "Bob's Your Uncle" it is.
I'd love to do this one.I'll get a post upon as soon as I can and I'm going for Cream Crackered.
BCC....I'm in, and excited. Do biographies of British persons (by British authors) count? Or only fiction?
Great Challenge-for sure I am in!
Since I teach Brit Lit - and absolutely love anything British -- I am seriously considering joining this lovely challenge. Thank you so much for hosting!
~I love the button for this challenge! It is too cute. :)
~I've "posted" and linked to this in my sidebar (right side of blog).
~This challenge sounds like my cup of tea!
I couldn't resist a British Challenge! Looking forward to it!
Well, who can resist that button? Not me! Count me in!
I thought I was done with my challenge sign-ups for next year, but I've obviously got to do this one. I'll put up my post about it and then come back and join up. Thanks for hosting - it's a great idea!
I have now posted my link with my list of tbr books for the challenge. I really look forward to getting started on this one. Thank you.
I wasn't going to sign up for any more challenges but.... I had to sign up for this! Thanks for thinking of it!

Woo-hoo! An excuse to read all those P.G. Woodhouse and Terry Prathcett and Jerome K Jerome books!
Sounds like a great idea!

Hugs, Bethxx
Thanks for hosting this challenge! I'm aiming for the Cream Crackered level. :)
Thanks for hosting........I said no more but can't resist this one!
I don't know how I missed this when it posted, but I'm going to have to take a look at my reading list. I'm sure I have some British authors on there for next year.
This looks like a fun challenge. Thanks for hosting it!
I'm in! My first reading challenge ever :)
And the button is absolutely adorable!

I'm in! So pleased to see a challenge about my favorite literature. My post is here:

I'd love to join in if I may!
After swearing that I wouldn't join another reading challenge this year, lo and behold, I stumbled upon this one. I am SO IN!
Thanks so much for hosting, BCC!
Question: Would Alexander McCall Smith's La's Orchestra Saves the World count? He is Scottish (not sure if you're counting Great Britain or just England) and the story is set in England.
Love to join in, just hope I'm not too late!!!
PS my post is on every Sunday 'Talking 'bout Books'
Just joined. Can't wait to get started. I'm going to try for Cream Crackered, but we'll see how that goes. At least I should find some new authors!
Count me in. I love cream crackers so it's 6 for me.
(Can't see Mr Linky - but here's a link to my 2010 challenges progress report!)
Oops - here's the link.

Okay, so Any British author, with the novel set in Britain, correct? So books by Mike Carey would count?, Suzanne McLeod? (the only two the jump forward in my mind at the moment)
Terry Pratchett? except he writes Discworld novels. Of Course his Johnny books (YA) are sent in Britain - Johnny and the Dead, Johnny and the Bomb....
Mardel - no, I didn't say the books had to be set in Britain just that the authors have to be British.
I have already started my first book and I'm loving it. This is such a great challenge, thanks for hosting it!
I have joined my first ever reading challenge! But being new to blogging, i have no idea how to link or post (i think these are the right words?) so i don't know how to put the challenge on my blog?! Anyway im going to do the cream crackered challenge. Kate
One more questions - I read over the post but might have missed it - can re-reads count? a book I've read a very long time ago?
I want to do this challenge, but I can't make up my mind which level to do.
I've got Suzanned McLeod in mind (new book coming out in Sept) and Terry Pratchett (Unseen Academicals). Mike Carey also, I have two his books waiting for me to read.
You're hosting some fun challenges, by the way!
Hi Kategrey - if you send me an email I will explain how to link and post if you like? :)
Mardel - I did say in details that any format counts, so yes ebooks/audio books count but only those you've read/listened to from the start of this year :)
It's a long way from Hawaii to Britain but I want to join the challenge. I just posted my books today. Take care and Aloha from Rob
I don't know why I hadn't joined in on this one yet. I read and love British authors. I'm in so many challenges, though, that I'm going to start at the 2 book level and see how all these challenges go. Thanks!
Fab challenge. Makes me proud to be British thinking of all these wonderful authors. I'm in for the cream crackered challenge.
I vowed no more challenges - then I saw this one! I am in at Gordon Bennett level and will move up if I can!
thanks again!
I thought I signed up but I'm not showing up on the Mr. Linky. Perhaps I did something wrong or do I have to wait to be approved?
Hi Pamela, no you don't have to be approved so not sure where you went, but you are all signed up now :)
Exciting challenge. Glad to meet the criteria ahead of time. I started a Philip Pullman book on the 1st!
a little late but I had to sign up. am trying Bob's your Uncle. thanks for hosting. first title The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
I love British authors! (Says the girl who focused on Brit Lit in college.) I'm going to aim for "Cream Crackered" and have the challenge stuff up on my blog here.
Just a quick note to say that I've decided not to do the challenge. Not sure if you can remove 'Nan' from Mr. Linky or not, but wanted to let you know.
Novels only or nonfiction, too?
Looks like fun!
What a great idea for a challenge! Since I usually read quite a lot from British authors I'm definitely joining :-) Thanks for hosting it!
I'm in at the 8 book level. This goes perfectly with my Battle of the Prizes, British Version, challenge. We even came up with similar buttons, although your dog is much cuter than mine.
What a great idea for a challenge! Thanks!

I'm ready with my first link for Feb. just let us know when you have a link up for this month. I'm really having a lot of fun by the way so Thanks!
Sorry guys for keeping you with regards to adding your reviews. I have changed the format of this one. Just keep adding reviews to Mr Linky that was there. I was hoping to get some monthly prizes but without success. I may do a contest at the end of the year, but I will see how it goes. Will let you know with an update :)
I think I understand from your above post that we are to use the sign up linky to add reviews.
I just added the link to my review of One Fat Englishman. I hope that was the right way to do it.
Books don't get much more Typically British than Kinglsley Amis's One Fat Englishman!
This is a great challenge!
I forgot I had another review ready to go. This is my review of The New Confessions by William Boyd.
I also added the link with Mr. Linky -- hope that was right.
Reviews do not go on Mr Linky above as this is the *Sign Up* page. Reviews are to be posted on the *Reviews* page. You can find it by clicking button on sidebar. Any reviews posted on Mr Linky on sign up page will be deleted. Thanks!
Another great challenge, and one I'm very eager to participate in!
Sorry to be so dense, but I can't find a "Reviews" button on the sidebar. I found a "Reviews" button in your header bar, but it took me to your list of reviews, with nothing about this challenge and no Mr. Linky.
I'm afraid you are going to have to draw me a map.
Sorry that I added another link to a review above, on this sign up page, because I didn't read the comments first. It is my review of Three Loves by A. J. Cronin.
I am a huge "britophile" and love to read Britsh authors. I am going to go for Cream Crackered!
Can I remove the review I just posted on Mr. Linky? I forgot that the books have to be fiction in this challenge. The review I posted, "How to Get Things Really Flat,"is non-fiction. Thanks, Rob
Fun idea! As a British writer, I'm delighted to share these books! I'm going cream crackered (Cockney-rhyming slang for 'knackered' or as tired as a worn out old horse).
Saw this challenge mentioned by Vivienne at Serendipity and thought I'd give it a go. Only my second book challenge in just under a year of blogging, I'm looking forward to participating.
I learned of this challenge at Petty Witter's blog yesterday. Better late than never.... and I already have one qualifying book under my belt for the year.
My first book read and reviewed - The Double Eagle by James Twining.
Hiya, this is my first challenge, have really just started blogging. I thought this would be a good way to broaden my book horizons. Hopefully I'll be able to post a review soon. Going to go for 'Cream crackered'.
I've been planning to read more British writers so this challenge is a great fit! I adore Sarah Waters and hope to find more amazing British writers. Aiming for "Bob's Your Uncle" because I want to incorporate the phrase into my verbal repertoire.
Yay, this one looks like a lot of fun too! I have a stack of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers I've been meaning to finish. Thanks again!
Ok, the cute doggie talked me into it! I am in!
Thanks for what I know will be an enjoyable challenge. I'm going for Cream-Crackered.
found your blog last night - decided I wanted to do the challenges so started a book blog today... big grin.. I'm looking forward to getting ideas of books to read from others participating. thanks for hosting.
Have just found this through a friend and love it because despite being an Australian . . . I mostly read British authors of all sorts. Looking forward to the challenge.
I'm finally getting started on this one. So far, finished Agatha Christie's Endless Night. Up next of this one, is some Ellis Peters Cadfael stories!
I'm signing up for the full 8!
K, I've reached "Put the Kettle On." I'm aiming for "Bob's Your Uncle!"
I've actually finished the challenge, but have written a post recommending it highly. My British reading is crime fiction, but I regard this as the foundation of the genre.
I just posted this on Kerrie's blog, but without knowing this challenge existed, I'm already "Cream Crackered" (I read primarily mysteries--and, of those, the majority are by English writers). Perhaps you should add another category--I suggested "Marmite on toast."
Finished! I've read the required 6 books for the "Bob's your uncle" level. My list is here: http://abookwormsjourney.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post_27.html
Oh I am in! Couldn't decide whether to join in on my reading blog or my British blog.... plumped for the reading one.
In the middle of Sherlock Holmes right now so I will start with that.
Aiming for cream crackered!
I was thinking of joining in, but after checking my list for 2010, I saw I'd already read 21 British books, so there didn't seem much point :(
I have not read enough British authors/books this year and I feel I have something to do about it. Therefore I'll join this Challenge
