BCC: Firstly, thanks so much for participating in BCC’s first All Hallows Eve. Your latest book in the Greywalker series, Vanished, was released August this year. Can you tell my readers a little about it?
KR: Each book has a working title that’s usually pretty indicative of what’s going on. This one was “Why Me?” since there’s no clear reason why Harper became a Greywalker and other people who’ve had near death experiences don’t. So in trying to answer that question, she’s forced to look at her past and that means going home to Los Angeles to talk to her mother and asking what’s strange about her life. The discovery that her father didn’t die in an accident, but rather that he killed himself over the strange things he though were happening only makes the mystery deeper and closer to home. Before she can look a lot harder at why he committed suicide and why his ghost is missing, Harper gets pulled back to Seattle and set on a task by Edward, the chief vampire, that sends her to London where a lot of nasty things seem to be going on in the vampire community. It doesn’t take long for Harper to discover that some of this is not coincidence and it’s aimed at her. Confrontation with an old foe will send her back to Seattle with some answers but even more questions.
BCC: What are you working on now?
KR: I’m currently working on Book 5 of the Greywalker series, LABYRINTH, which continues where VANISHED leaves off.
BCC: Ooh, can’t wait! Tell us about your writing process.
KR: My process is getting looser as I get older. I still start with a general idea, then do some research and plotting, then start writing, stop, do more outlining, and back and forth for a while until I have a solid, but not too-detailed outline. Then I start writing in earnest and that, plus changes and additional research can take from three to five months to complete. Once I have a complete first draft, I send that to my editor and then we revise. Usually I’m working on additional research or clarifications that I didn’t have time for before the first deadline so the “revision” is usually draft 2.1 or 2.5. I pretty much just sit down and work every week day until I hit a word goal or pass some other mark like getting a particular scene done or a certain chapter finished. I write about 2,000 words a day or 10,000 a week, but that’s an average.
BCC: When and where do you like to write?
KR: I work at home for the most part, but I can actually work almost anywhere. I’ve got a lot of writing done on planes or in airports, hotels, coffee houses, bars, libraries… you name it. I seem to work better either late at night when distractions are fewer in public where I feel I’m not allowed to slack off–someone might notice!
BCC: Have any books or authors inspired your writing?
KR: That’s tough, really. I love to read and there are so many authors that I like either from the past or currently. I love Dashiell Hammet and Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich and James M. Caine as well as Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie, but I also have a lot of love for writers like Jane Austen, Kenneth Graham, Shakespeare, Diane Duane, Madeline L’Engle, Patricia A. McKillip, Richard K. Morgan, Charlaine Harris, Tanya Huff, and Philip K. Dick.
BCC: Do you think that Urban Fantasy is still a growing genre or do think think it’s already at its peak?
KR: I think there’s always room for really great stories, regardless of niche, but in general, I think Urban Fantasy is probably about as big as it’s going to get in terms of the number of books and authors in the niche. Some will go, new ones will take their place and I think there’s going to be a stronger representation of the dark side and male writers and male protagonists. Women have been dominating the niche but with writers like Mario Acevedo, Mark Teppo, J.F. Lewis, John Meaney, and Thomas E. Sneigoski on board I think we’re going to see some new directions that bring the guys into the fold.
BCC: What’s the most challenging and most rewarding aspect of writing?
KR: Getting it done at all. There are a million things that demand you time from laundry to publicity to Twitter and they all want to take your mind off the actual writing, but even the worst day writing is better than the best day in the Cube Farm. so when you finish a manuscript or get a particularly tricky scene done, it feels fantastic. And nothing is better than the thrill of seeing the book on a store shelf or getting a fan letter from someone who was truly touched by something you wrote.
BCC: What do you do for fun outside of writing?
KR: I play World of Warcraft with my husband when I can, I go target shooting and ride my motorcycle or go out with friends. I love to wander around and see new things and I love research, too, since anything interesting might turn into a story.
BCC: What inspired you to set Vanished in London? Did you come to London for research?
KR: Yes I did go to London to research settings and background for VANISHED. I always wanted to go to London–I’d never been before–and in reviewing the books I saw I’d already built a lot of things in that pointed to complications for the vampires in London. Both Edward and Wygan are English, or seem to be, and I packed Harper’s ex-boyfriend Will off to London at one point, so it seemed I’d have to send her there to deal with some problems eventually. And I’d always had in mind to wrap up the vampire arc eventually so with so many reasons to go, it was natural to set a lot of VANISHED in London.
BCC: Will Harper travel more in future books in the series?
KR: Maybe not so far afield, but yes, she will go outside Seattle. She’s already been to Oaxaca, Mexico in the novella “The Third Death of the Little Clay Dog” and I hope to send her to the Olympic Peninsula for Book 6 and possibly a lot farther away for future books.
Thanks so much Kat!

Glad to hear there will be another book in the series. Interesting what she said about male authors. I was thinking the other day how few there were in the genre.

RKCharron: about covers–I, like most authors, have very little say in the covers. I'm lucky to have fantastic artists and designers who "get" my books, but it's pure luck.
elnice: It's surprising how many guys there actually are in the niche. They either get overlooked, or people say "but they don't write Urban Fantasy" and yet… they do! Charles de Lint is often credited as one of the originators of the genre and Simon R. Green's been in the biz for ages, so there are guys out there, you just have to seek them out.
