Every now and again, I like to watch a really good love story. It’s nice to get away from the boring aspects of life and just sit back and immerse myself in romance. My hubby even likes to do this with me *although, it’s taken years of training*

So here are our favourite top ten romance movies, that even brought a tear to hubster’s eye… In no particular order:

1. The Notebook (2004)

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams
Directed by: Nick Cassavetes
This is a romance movie that has everything for me: feisty relationship, hot sexy male lead, great chemistry between the actors and a beautiful love story. How can you not be moved by Noah and Allie’s story.

2. The Way We Were (1973)

Starring: Robert Redford, Babara Striesand
Directed by: Sydney Pollack
I watched this film when I was pretty young and it really affected me. I couldn’t understand that if they loved each other why they couldn’t be together. Now I’m older I can understand why. Sometimes love is not enough. But it brings back memories of my wide-eyed innocence. I also love both the actors, big favourites of mine.

3. Ghost (1990)

Starring: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore
Directed by: Jerry Zucker
This was probably the first romance flick my husband watched and realised he “actually likes this crap” and tried to cover up the fact that he got a little emotional. I like that in my man – he’s in touch with his feminie side – although he would kill me if he knew I was telling the world! I loved this story, it was sweet and mushy. I also had a huge crush on Swayze, so ’nuff said.

4. Pretty Woman (1990)

Starring: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere
Directed by: Garry Marshall
This was the movie that I fell in love with Julia Roberts. She is another favourite of mine and I love all the movies she’s in. Richard Gere is pretty dishy too! I loved the rags to riches aspect, it was really fun. And who can forget the scene where Roberts goes back to the shop where they were snooty, just to rub their noses in the fact that she now has lots of money to spend! Brilliant!

5. An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

Starring: Richard Gere, Debra Winger
Directed by: Taylor Hackford
Now this was the movie that I fell in love with Richard Gere… talk about delicious! And that uniform *fans self* I loved this movie and still do. It has class and the total fantasy of being whisked away by the man of your dreams… *sigh*

6. Titanic (1997)

Starring: Leonado DiCaprio, Kate Winslet
Directed by: James Cameron
Yes, I was a fan of Leonado.. and still am. I think he’s great. I really like Winslet too, I think she’s a really talented actress and beautiful as well. This movie was awesome when it came out. With the graphics as the ship broke up to the heartbreaking ending. I cried and cried, which was a little embarrassing as was sitting in the cinema…

7. Dirty Dancing (1987)

Starring: Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey
Directed by: Emile Ardolino
Didn’t we all want to dance the samba with Swayze after seeing this movie. Jennifer was definitely the ordinary girl next door… so we all had a chance right? This was such a fun film and it’s sad to think that Swayze is no more.. but what a legacy.

8. Notting Hill (1999)

Starring: Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant
Directed by: Roger Mitchell
This was such a funny film. This is the kind of British movie I’m proud of and love. Forget Trainspotting with it’s raw, depressing vibe. This is more like it: funny, romantic, sweet. I loved Hugh Grant in this, he was so genuine. Julia Roberts is always good. One of my favourite moments is the ending. Most funniest moment is Hugh Grants roommate opening the door to the paps in his pants. Genuis.

9. Pearl Harbour (2001)

Starring: Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale
Directed by: Michael Bay
This story is just so heart wrenching. Thinking that the man you are in love with is dead, finding love again with his best friend, only to find out your original love is still alive! Great man candy in this movie with Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett.

10. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Starring: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal
Directed by: Ang Lee
This is one of the most moving films I have seen. A great love story between two guys that just breaks your heart. Acted superbly by both Ledger and Gyllenhaal. If you haven’t seen it, do. It’s amazing.

Love this post! Makes me want to break out all my romantic movies :-)

I wept in the cinema when I watched Titanic too!

Added to those films I would also put up Sweet Home Alabama – sure, it's not clever but I adore it.

The Notebook was a good, sad movie. I just recently watched the Titanic. It's a good movie, but it's really hard to watch because it really makes you think after each time you watch it.

I agree with most of the movies you mentioned.
Brokeback Mountain never fails to make me cry. You know what, when we saw this movie with my best friend we both started crying at the very end of the movie…when you see that he's kept the shirt with the blood on the sleeve…omg I've never cried so hard.

This is such a good list, I've seen nearly all of these and pretty much loved each one.

I'm not sure how it's possible I still haven't seen Brokeback Mountain though. If it's top ten worthy I should probably fix that.

I was talking to Jenny about Pearl Harbour the other day. When it first came out, I was a true true fan, like a crazy teenage girl. I bought it on video, yes, it was that long ago because it didn't come out on dvd, nor did I have a dvd player. I watched it every single night for like 4 months, I wasted so many hours crying like a girl over those two boys. I was devastated when Rafe came back, I wanted him to go away. Man, this makes me nostalgic and Dirty Dancing, best film EVER

I absolutely love Dirty Dancing, I probably have watched it more than I care to share (a lot!). Love movies where the 'underdog' wins at the end. Big sucker for that. ;)

Another favorite romance movie of mine is 'Only You' starring Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. So sweet.

Happy VDAY!

I loved Brokeback Mountain too – it haunted me for days after I saw it the first time.

I still love Titanic. I was just a freshman in high school when it first came out and I cried both times I saw it in the movie theater. I still have my VHS tapes! And oh man, I can't count how many times I've seen Dirty Dancing. If only all summer vacations were that good! :)

I have watched almost all of these movies, but I have never seen BBM.

My other fave movie with Leo beside Titanc has to be the remake of Romeo and Juliet. He played that part so well, and it was so good. He made an excellent Romeo.

Loved your list.

Aww, wonderful choice of movies! I love The Notebook, such a beautiful movie! The Titanic is so touching too, even after all the times I've watched. Definitely going to go watch Pearl Harbor now, it's been on my to-be-watched list for a long time now. :D
