BOOK REVIEW Part 3: Zombie - An Anthology of the Undead

Title: Zombie - An Anthology of the Undead
Author: Brian Keene (among others). Edited by Christopher Golden
Publisher: Piatkus
Publications Date 18 March 2010
Paperback: 500 pages
Genre: Horror
Tags: Zombies

The Wind Cries Mary by Brian Keene

Short Summary:

A man watches daily as his zombie wife shuffles back each night to their family home.

Review:

I've read a few novels by this author: The Rising, City of the Dead and Dead Sea, all of which I enjoyed. Sadly, I didn't enjoy The Wind Cries Mary as much as I did his books.

I knew what to expect from this author but unfortunately this short story just didn't work for me. It felt slightly amateurish, trying too hard to put a twist in the tale, to put a slant on the zombie story and the ending had my eyes rolling.

However, the great thing about Keene is his ability to pull you into the story from the first page, and although I didn't particularly enjoy this story, he still managed to grab my attention and keep it focused until the end. His descriptions of zombies are well written too and I could imagine the disgusting, putrefying form of his zombie wife shuffling towards the front door with her broken and decomposing body.

The aspect of the 'zombie story' that disturbs me more than anything is the desolation and isolation, with a sprinkling of no hope. The fact that everyone can be infected, even the police and government, means you really are totally and utterly alone *shudders*. Keene succeeds in what is the shortest story in the Zombie Anthology.

**Look out for Book Review Part 4 later today**

Sorry to hear that this story didn't work for you, but at least you weren't bored. This collection gets more intriguing with each review.

I didn't care for this one much either. It seemed kind of pointless.
