On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted here at Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It’s where I list all the books I desperately want but haven’t actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It’s also an event that you can join in with too – Mr Linky is always at the ready for you to link your own ‘On My Wishlist’ post. I hope you will join in! If you want to know more click here.
I haven’t read anything by this author, although I do have a short story in Zombie: An Anthology of the Undead, which I reviewed a few weeks back, so I may read that first to see if I like his writing style before buying this one. But it does sound good.
Patient Zero
Jonathan Mayberry (Gollancz)
Publication Date: 16 April 2009
Paperback: 432 pages
Genre: Horror
Tags: Zombies
Goodreads Summary:
When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there’s either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills… and there’s nothing wrong with Joe Ledger’s skills. And that’s both a good, and a bad thing. It’s good because he’s a Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can’t handle. This rapid response group is called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It’s bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance…
This book has been on my wishlist for some time. It looks like such a great Urban Fantasy. I love the cover too.
Amazon Ink
Lori Devoti (Pocket Books)
Publication Date: 26 May 2009
Paperback: 372 pages
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Goodreads Summary:
It’s been ten years since Melanippe Saka left the Amazon tribe in order to create a normal life for her daughter, Harmony. True, running a tattoo parlor in Madison, Wisconsin, while living with your Amazon warrior mother and priestess grandmother is not everyone’s idea of normal, but Mel thinks she’s succeeded at blending in as human.
Turns out she’s wrong. Someone knows all about her, someone who’s targeting young Amazon girls, and no way is Mel going to let Harmony become tangled in this deadly web. With her mother love in overdrive, Ms. Melanippe Saka is quite a force…even when she’s facing a barrage of distractions — including a persistent detective whose interest in Mel goes beyond professional, a sexy tattoo artist with secrets of his own, and a seriously angry Amazon queen who views Mel as a prime suspect. To find answers, Mel will have to do the one thing she swore she’d never do: embrace her powers and admit that you can take the girl out of the tribe…but you can’t take the tribe out of the girl.
I really like the sound of Twelve. I’m not normally into historical books, but as it contains vampires I thought it would be quite good. Has anybody read this one and can recommend?
Twelve
Jasper Kent (Bantam)

Paperback: 480 pages
Genre: Historical Horror
Tags: Vampires
Goodreads Summary:
On 12th June 1812, Napoleon’s Grande Armee forded the River Niemen and crossed the Rubicon – its invasion of Russia had begun. Charged with delaying the enemy’s inexorable march on Moscow, a group of Russian officers summon the help of the oprichniki, a band of mercenaries from the outermost fringes of Christian Europe. As rumours of a plague travelling west from the Black Sea reach the Russians, the Oprichniki – twelve in number – arrive. Preferring to work alone, and at night, they prove brutally, shockingly effective against the French. But one amongst the Russians, Captain Aleksei Ivanovich Danilov, is unnerved by the mercenaries’ ruthlessness…and as he comes to understand the true, horrific nature of these strangers, he wonders at the nightmare they’ve unleashed in their midst…

I read Twelve last year. While it garnered a lot of praise from bloggers, it didn't do anything for me.
Part of the problem was that the book didn't convey a sense of setting. It's like the author took all the relevant political and military details necessary for the plot and expected to make the story without trying to actually place the reader in 1812 Russia. I like history books, but reading this was boring.
Also, I didn't really get into the main character. I didn't buy his motivations for fighting the vampires (who were hired by his group precisely to fight the French).
But then I seem to be in the minority on this book. Others seem to like it more than I do.
