On Saturday, during the Easter break, I attended Odyssey 2010 (aka eastercon). This was my second convention and it had a lot to live up to after I had attended World Horror Con the weekend before.
On arriving we (my hubby and I – yes, I dragged him to another con – well, he’s so good at carrying all the books!) picked up our registration badges and goodie bags (which were very stingy and didn’t come close to the awesomeness of WHC!) then made our way to the bar (for a coffee!) where we said a brief hello to Liz (My Favourite Books). We then bumped into Amanda (Floor to Ceiling Books), Jason (Kamvision), Cara (Murf), Sam Sykes (author of TOME OF THE UNDERGATES) and a few others who’s names escape me (apologies).
I also had the pleasure of finally meeting Lee (editor at Angry Robot Books), who I twitter with on a regular basis. It was lovely to actually chat with him face to face! Amanda and I had a lovely talk with him about books and how one in particular leaves Amanda feeling like “a cheese that stands alone.”
Me, Amanda & Lee
I also met up with the lovely Suzanne McLeod (author of the SPELLCRACKERS series) again (first time at WHC) and managed to get a photo, having missed out last time. I also met Jon Weir, publicist for Gollancz, another person I twitter with on occasion and it was great to finally meet him too!
Suzanne McLeod & Me!
Also said a quick hello to M. D. Lachlan (author of WOLFSANGEL). It was nice to meet him and he seems to be a very nice guy! Although I didn’t have his book to sign, he did sign one of his postcards:
After lunch I managed to get to the ‘Writers & the Web’ which was quite interesting. Line up on the panel was Joe Abercrombie, John Meaney, Maura McHugh and Mark Charan Newton (who was actually a lot quieter than he is on Twitter!). It was interesting to hear their thoughts on websites, blogging, twitter etc and how it affects them as authors.
For me Odyssey wasn’t as good as WHC, but it’s a science fiction convention, and although I have read a few sci-fi books, I’m still a newbie to this genre, so maybe this had something to do with it. I knew many of the authors by name but hadn’t actually read their books so the excitement wasn’t as great as WHC *with highlights such as interviewing Kelley Armstrong and meeting James Herbert, how could it come close!*
Overall It was a very nice day and I really enjoyed meeting up with other bloggers and publicists/authors I twitter with. But that’s it for now regarding ‘Cons’ until November, and FANTASY CON!!
