So I was super excited when I heard Book Chick City was having a House of Night Week! I’ve had many conversations about this series. It seems to be one that a lot of people are split over. You either really enjoy it, or you don’t. I really enjoy it! I think it’s a great, fresh spin on vampires, or in this series’s case vampyres. My favorite thing is how it adds Cherokee legend and magic into the mix with vampyres.
I’m from Tennessee, so having some Cherokee heritage, or other Native American heritage, in your background if your from around here, is not that surprising of a thing. I do, though you sure couldn’t tell by looking at me, you can in my dad’s whole family. Maybe that’s why this series fascinates me. I love that aspect of it, but I really think it’s the way the magic, legend, and vampyres are blended together into a new present day world. One where the most beautiful and talented people are usually vampyres, women are in charge, and human constraints are left behind.
The House of Night itself is a fantastic setting. It pulls the reader in and gives you a place where anything can happen. It’s a place that’s full of magic and secrets, where the freshly marked vampyre fledglings learn and worship their Goddess Nix in hopes of surviving the process of becoming a vampyre. While it’s their home, it’s apparent that all things at the House of Night may not always be what they seem.
As for the characters, they are all unique and lovable. Zoey Redbird is someone who continues to grow and find herself, though her boy troubles do get rather taxing. Stevie Rae, Zoey’s best friend, is such a lovable person and her Okie sayings crack me up! She evolves a LOT as the books progress, but I don’t want to give anything away to those that haven’t read it yet.
The twins are fabulous both in the finishing of each other’s sentences and their fashion sense and put downs, and Damien is the super smart gay guy of the group. Aphrodite, well lets just say she tends to rub people the wrong way, but she’s beautiful and gets visions and has a major attitude in the process. One of my favorite characters is Grandma Redbird. She’s where Zoey gets her Cherokee heritage from and learns the legends and some of her magic. Grandma Redbird is wonderful!
I’m looking forward to Burned and seeing where the story goes next. You can bet I’ll be finding out! Will you?

Thanks very much for this, it's great to hear why you love the series so much. I like the cherokee legends too, it's a very unusual side to it.
I hope you enjoy Burned when you get to read it!

I loved this series and patiently waiting until Wednesday for Burned. I have found the only part I haven't enjoyed is the constant boy bickering but that also probably makes it more realistic teenager wise (and it has been a long time since I was a teenager). I am a big history buff so I also love how they bring in the legends and beliefs of the nations. Good stuff all around

Great post Amanda! Another series I need to get started on! I love books that have a mythology or unique history following their characters so HoN sounds great for me.

Always nice to learn in depth why someone really thinks a series is worth delving into! Thanks Amanda this was very well thought out and since the series is already on my wish list/to buy list it cements my decision to do so in the future. Have to narrow down my TBR shelves some more first but will get to it eventually..

I love this series and love the fact that Zoey isn't perfect she makes mistakes like the rest of us. However the amount of guys that are attracked to her is a bit ditracting at times. But I can't wait for Burned. x

I'm so glad everyone liked it. This series is one that I've always enjoyed.
The boy stuff does get rather tiring to me at times too, but once I move past that, I love the uniqueness of this story. I'm just hoping that my interest continues to be held through the rest of the series.
Glad I help some of you all learn a little more about the series, and nice to find some fellow HoN lovers!
