On My Wishlist #20

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where I list all the books I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It's also an event that you can join in with too - Mr Linky is always at the ready for you to link your own 'On My Wishlist' post. If you want to know more click here. (Idea inspired by The Story Siren)

I came across this new-to-me author over at Scifiguy where the entire series was listed. It sounds really good and I do love to discover new series to begin!
Staying Dead (Retrievers #1)
Laura Anne Gilman (Luna)
Publication Date: 1 June 2006
Hardback: 416 pages
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Goodreads Summary:
It starts as a simple job—but simple jobs, when you're dealing with the magical world, often end up anything but. As a Retriever, Wren Valere specializes in finding things gone missing—and then bringing them back, no questions asked. Normally her job is stimulating, challenging and only a little bit dangerous. But every once in a while . . .
Case in point: A cornerstone containing a spell is stolen and there's a magical complication. (Isn't there always?) Wren's unique abilities aren't enough to lay this particular case to rest, so she turns to some friends: a demon (minor), a mage who has lost his mind, and a few others, including Sergei, her business partner (and maybe a bit more?). Sometimes what a woman has to do to get the job done is enough to give even Wren nightmares . . .
Books in Series Order:
1. Staying Dead
3. Bring It On
5. Free Fall

This sounds like such a good read. I'm really intrigued and I like the cover - very striking.
The Rapture
Liz Jensen (Bloomsbury)
Publication Date: 5 Jan 2010
Hardback: 352 pages
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Goodreads Summary:
In a merciless summer of biblical heat and destructive winds, Gabrielle Fox's main concern is a personal one: to rebuild her career as a psychologist after a shattering car accident. But when she is assigned Bethany Krall, one of the most dangerous teenagers in the country, she begins to fear she has made a terrible mistake. Raised on a diet of evangelistic hellfire, Bethany is violent, delusional, cruelly intuitive and insistent that she can foresee natural disasters - a claim which Gabrielle interprets as a symptom of doomsday delusion.
But when catastrophes begin to occur on the very dates Bethany has predicted, and a brilliant, gentle physicist enters the equation, the apocalyptic puzzle intensifies and the stakes multiply. Is the self-proclaimed Nostradamus of the psych ward the ultimate manipulator, or could she be the harbinger of imminent global cataclysm on a scale never seen before? And what can love mean in 'interesting times'? A haunting story of human passion and burning faith set against an adventure of tectonic proportions, "The Rapture" is an electrifying psychological thriller that explores the dark extremes of mankind's self-destruction in a world on the brink.

Doesn't this just sound SO good?! My birthday is coming up soon and this is definitely on my *hoping to get for my birthday* list! It sounds a pretty scary read - I just hope it lives up to my expectations, not a lot scares me these days... Have you read it?
Hater (Jesse James Dawson #1)
David Moody (Gollancz)
Publication Date: 3 Sept 2009
Paperback: 272 pages
Genre: Horror
Goodreads Summary:
REMAIN CALM DO NOT PANIC TAKE SHELTER WAIT FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS THE SITUATION IS UNDER CONTROL
Society is rocked by a sudden increase in the number of violent assaults on individuals. Christened 'Haters' by the media, the attackers strike without warning. The assaults are brutal, remorseless and extreme: within seconds, normally rational, self-controlled people are becoming maddened, vicious killers. There are no apparent links as a hundred random attacks become a thousand, and then thousands, right across the country.
Everyone, irrespective of gender, age, race, sexuality or any other difference, has the potential to become a victim - or a Hater. People are afraid to go to work, afraid to leave their homes and, increasingly, afraid that at any moment their friends, even their closest family, could turn on them with murderous intent. By the end of today you could be dead. By the end of today you could be a killer. Attack first, ask questions later ...but the answer might not be what you expect ...
That's my wishlist this week - what's on yours?

Staying dead kind of looks good. The cover is very cool. Nice wishlist.
I love the cover of Staying Dead!
The Rapture looks awesome! Thanks! I have never heard of that one before.
I have The Rapture but haven't read it yet. Hater sounds good, too!
They all look awesome! That cover for Rapture is stunning.

I have The Rapture, I've yet to read it. Hater sounds interesting!
Staying Dead sounds really good and I love The Rapture cover!
Ooh, yours sound good. I especially like the sound of The Rapture.
Mine is in Mr. Linky, but it's here:

As always very nice selection. I keep trying to get into Staying Dead, I just can't seem to click.
I have all the Gilman books but the last, have yet to read them, hopefully soon. The Rapture looks interesting. The Haters' cover kinda deters me. It has a gore look to it. I know I shouldn't judge a book by the cover, but I don't like that one. LOL.
I’m hoping to read The Retrievers series soon. I read Hard Magic which is a spinoff of that series earlier this month. It was pretty good and now I want to learn more about the world.
The Rapture sounds awesome. I’m adding that one to my TBR list! Hater does sound scary. Probably too scary for me ;)
I've been thinking about checking out Gilman's books.. One of her books is available through NetGalley (not your wishlist book but related to that series I think) that I was thinking about reviewing..
I have got another Laura Anne Gilman book that I am going to be reading next. And I love the cover of The Rapture. I might be adding that one to my TBR list! Hope you get your books soon :)
Oh, these sound so good. Thanks for bringing them to my attention!
Awesome picks...running off to my make additions to my wishlist...
I saw Staying Dead at my local bookstore the other day and was intrigued... Now even more so!
The cover of The Rapture is enough to make you want to buy it! And the content sounds deliciously divine and thrilling.
I'm adding both The Rapture and Haters to my Wishlist.
Thanks Book Chick City!
I read/reviewed The Rapture last fall...it's good! Here is my review if you are interested:
