Where Stories Are Made: Marianne de Pierres

Banner designed by Twoscoopz

Where Stories Are Made is a regular feature here at Book Chick City. It's where the author takes us on a tour of their writing place, be it an office, coffee shop or park and tells us about their writing day and rituals. My guest today is science fiction writer Marianne de Pierres...

When I started writing seriously, I was lucky enough to have an office with a door. That lasted for about seven blissful years. When we moved house three years ago, my husband and I both needed an office and there was only one in the new place. After a ‘troubled’ week trying to share it, I moved upstairs to an open space. At first, I was unhappy with this, but over time I’ve grown accustomed to having the extra light and noise around me. It just goes to show, you can write anywhere if you really want to. During the school holidays I sometimes move my lap top around the house to escape the noise of the TV – but other than that, my nook and I are happy together because we’re near the bookcases. Being able to turn my head and look at all my books is like a meditation. I get lost in the memories of all those stories.

My Desk

Writing in coffee shops can be fun sometimes, but invariably the battery runs flat, or the chair gets uncomfortable, or the guy next to you starts to shout into his mobile. I mostly prefer to be at home.

My Galah's, Bono & Mare

In my old office, I used to have the wall filled with pictures. Here I’ve opted for the bare look. I’ve found I concentrate better without too much visual distraction. I’m in my nook from 7am most mornings, until 1pm. Sometimes I try and fit some more writing time into the afternoons, but generally it’s taken up with family needs. I don’t have cats but I can see my three galahs from where I sit as they perform morning antics and try and entice me out to play. They usually win out at some stage during the day.

If I could, I’d definitely come back as a galah. Sleep, eat and yahoo!

It is nice to meet you Marianne and if I had the choice of a bare wall or the fun antics of three galahs would choose them as well....
Thanks for sharing a little of your writing places and what makes it work for you.

Hi Jackie,
thanks - lovely to meet you. I love my birds. They are so smart and happy and direct. "Scratch me, feed me, play with me. BITE. I've had enough, leave me alone now!"

Thanks for sharing a bit your writing experiences. I would think writing at a cafe too distracting as well.

I like your workingspace :)
I love writing, but my desk sucks, no place for anything, just the keyboard.

Hi Amanda,

my pleasure. Maybe I'm just a homebody :)

Hi Blodeuedd,

Thanks! I like to have space around me. Too much clutter is quite claustrophobic. I'm not super tidy, but I like to have things in piles at least!

NIce space. Next to the bookcase, what more could you want. Although, that might distract me. :) That bird is beautiful!
