The Blogger’s Bookshelf is a regular fortnightly feature here at Book Chick City. It’s where we get to tour each others bookshelves… and drool a little ;) I can’t help but love these kind of posts, being kinda nosy an’ all, however it always ends up with me being completely green with envy! There are some great posts coming up, so I hope you enjoy. You can view the full schedule HERE.

The girls are back! Noa, Day & Kitt from ‘Paperback Dolls’ first revealed their favourite books in my fortnightly feature ‘Books We Love‘. Today they give us a fabulous tour of their bookshelves, enjoy!

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

First of all I’d like to thank Carolyn for asking me and Paperback Dolls to guest blog with her. Noa, Day, and I are extremely honored that Book Chick City wanted us to be apart of her feature considering we’re still such a new and baby blog.

With that said, Hi! I’m KittNLuv or just Kitt, as most call me. *waves* I’m actually really new to the whole reading addiction. It’s only been a year and half…hmm maybe more since I first saw True Blood and just had to find out what was next. I’d liked to say that I was one of those cool people that read all the time before, or that I actually started reading Sookie Stackhouse prior or at the beginning of True Blood, even in the middle, but the truth is… I’m just not, I started when the show was over. I’m one of those Trubies that just wanted more.

So, this first photo of my really old book shelf, we’ll call him Maynard, was all we’d actually use to use bookshelves for. Deist, my DB of seven years, and I had some books that you can see there at the top. Almost all his, though, with Frank Hurbert’s Dune and Robert Jordan. However, mostly it’s just used for my extensive photo collection, board games (yes, that is Dugeons & Dragons cards you see :P ] and then at the bottom, my failing comic book collection (no, before you ask, there isn’t one with any true value).

The way you see my room here (This is my library by the way. When Deist and I looked for a new place, I made sure to get a three bedroom. It was a non-negotiable! We have our room, he has his PC/Man cave, and I have my library. Win!) Where was I? Oh! Yes. The way you see my room is actually how the rest of my home is. (sad I know) We’ve lived here for a little over a year and as you can see I still have my rubber-maids in the middle of the floor (that’s my kitteh Dublin modeling) and the pictures that are suppose to be on the walls, are stuffed next to the dresser. I’ll get there eventually, but onto my next bookshelf, we’ll call him Trent.

He’s the shelves I just had to get, because after Stackhouse, I went down hill from there. It’s like books were crack and I needed my next fix. I found books through friends first, reading Anne Rice and Laurell K. Hamilton (both Anita and Merry) but by then, I started to get sucked into the whole book community. Everyone was so nice and they all had tons of suggestions! Trent is actually more like a time line of what series I read first (except the classics, I’ve always had those. A must read for every woman as far as I’m concerned) I went from LKH to Twilight, Mercy, Riley, Rachel and it continued this way until I needed Bob. (The books at the Bottom are Deists’ He has R.A.Salvatore and Conan graphic novels).

My last shelf is Bob. Good, ole wonderful Bob. He was my spill over shelf at first. There are tons of authors stacked high in his cubby wholes. So much so, in fact, that I’m already over flowing to the top. Bob has all my Ilona Andrews, Jeaniene Frosts, J.R. Ward, Lisa Klepas, Jocelynn Drake and Karen Marie Moning. Along with the rest of the other authors I read and almost everyone of them has an open series still. (I’m sure you noticed a trend in genre-all my books are uf, pnr, historical, or fantasy-and I don’t mean to be such a genre snob, but even if I was interested in others, I always find a new book in my genre that I just *have* to read first, so I never seem to get around to any of the others) All my books were purchased or aquired in the last year and half. I’m not a Kindle or a Nook lover. I’ve actually never even seen one, but I don’t really like the idea behind them anyways. I love the smell, the feel, and the weight of a book in your hands. I live in a small community and read so fast that the library isn’t even an option. I don’t mind buying all my books, though, I get to share them with friends, so they’re well used.

*SIGH*

A few months ago I gave away nearly 80% of my books when I got a kindle, and before that I only kept a few boxes of books because I tend to move around a lot. Each time I had moved I gave away most of my books to friends and family, and sometimes schools or libraries.

The shelf to the far left of the picture is most children’s books and young adult, it is home to CS Lewis, Mo Willem’s, JK Rowling, Michelle Paver, Suzanne Collins, and other popular favorites.

The middle shelf is quite the eclectic bunch. It houses the complete works of Jane Austen, The Bronte sisiters, as well as Noir books (The Hector Lassiter series by Craig McDonald), some sci-fiction (Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden Series), Urban Fantasy (Ilona Andrews), Romance (Karen Marie Moning), Historical fiction (David McCullough), Western (Larry McMurtry), Mystery (Charlaine Harris), Thriller (Lee Child) and Classics (Lord of The Flies ect…).

If you look to the far right there is about 30 books on a shelf that are non-fiction books ranging from political to inspirational books.

What I am not going to show you is my collection of cook books…simply because there are about 70 or so different books ranging from Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cookbook, to my beloved autograph copy of Paula Dean, and they are kept in my kitchen in a very un-organized manner *blushes*. So, you will just have to use your imagination on that book shelf;).

What can I say…I think its important to be well rounded in what you read! ;)

So, bookshelf huh? How do you explain to other people the strange and complicated system of book-shelving? In my family, we are all book hoarders. My dad is in constant “what can we throw out” mode, but when it comes to books, he might find some of someone else’s books left out on the curb and bring them home with him like you would a stray puppy. So space does become a problem, which is why books are housed everywhere. Encyclopedias, philosophy and art books and dictionaries are in the public domain, in the den where anyone can reach them. It is there that you can also find many of the classics, sometimes you can even find three or four copies of the same book (“I couldn’t just leave it there in the street”). The den is also the room that houses the entire collection of Agatha Christie books, Dick Francis, Le Carre, Follet, Forsyth, and any and all paperback thrillers and mysteries…Each shelf is three rows deep, so of course, every time you want to read a book, it has to be in the third row…

The guest room is where our old children’s books are. They are all well used, with folded corners, and edges that show the signs of tiny teeth, from teething babies – the future readers in the family. Its always funny to look at each book and see from the title, who it most likely belonged to. Any of my sisters who tried to sneak these books out of the house was reprimanded. I mean, what will their poor kids read when they come to visit?

Which brings us to my room. I guess every book in my room is a favorite, otherwise it would have been put on the more public shelves. I have my own system, which even works occasionally. On the shelf behind my bed are some old favorites in hardcover, along with the To Be Read pile. As you can see in the picture, right now there are quite a few mysteries on the cards… along with the final two installments in Harry Potter, my two favorite books in the Southern Vampire Series (Charlaine Harris) and books from my favorite historical fiction series – the Morland Dynasty (Cynthia Harrod Eagles). Missing from this shelf are my Kate Daniels Series books (Ilona Andrews) on loan to a sister (and overdo!!!! I need to re-read before the new book comes out!) and the Mercy series books (Patricia Briggs) also on loan to a friend. I have mentioned this over at Paperback Dolls blog – my sisters know that after 60 days, I will start hounding them to get my books back!

My room also houses the more “organized” shelf – this is where my classics are. Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, A.A. Milne, Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo (both in Hebrew), Rudyard Kipling, Deanna Raybourn and more Harry Potter. Also – my favorite Historical Romance – the first one I ever read, Kingdom of Dreams, by Judith Mcnaught (this is my second copy, my first was so worn out, the pages kept falling out), I love this book, and keep coming back no matter how many times I’ve read it.

The middle shelf is what I usually call my “grown up” shelf, here I have some of my favorite biographies and history books, more classics, and some of the books I used for thesis research… for some reason, even though my thesis is behind me, I have to keep them close.

Finally, the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Shelf” three rows deep, this shelf basically has every other book I love. From chic-lit to sci-fi, paranormal, and historical romance – here the Jill Mansells sit next to the Katie Ffordes, the Jilly Coopers and the Melissa Nathans together with Jane Feather, Lisa Shearin, Judith Mcnaught, Gaelen Foley and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I also have my Karen Marie Moning collection and some of my Dorothy Dunnetts, and of course – Ilona Andrew On the Edge! Oh, and yeah, I also have some DVDs there… There isn’t a book on this shelf that I wouldn’t give five stars to… So, those are my bookshelves, if you ever feel like borrowing something, let me know! Oh, and seriously, you who have borrowed Kate Daniels and have yet to return her to my domain – I will get you. I know where you live.
Happy Readings!
