BCC: Hi Jean, welcome to BCC, I hope you’re having a great first BBAW – So let’s get started. When and why did you start blogging?
Jean: I started my blog two years ago. My daughter who is has been blogging for five years encouraged me. She teased me with the promise of making me a header for my blog with my first post. I was hooked. I had been working at B&N for ten years and my customers always ask “what are you reading”? No better way for them all to keep current with my reading. Plus, so many people from Florida live in Northern cities during the summer months.
My blog is mostly short reviews of books, but every so often I like to throw in something about the publishing business or a tid bit about one of my cats. After all, my blog is named after my oldest cat Maurice.
BCC: What genre do you like to read the most and why?
Jean: I love fiction. Love it. I have been known to read some lighter works, but mostly, I love literary novels of substance. I am a huge fan of Pat Conroy’s BEACH MUSIC and Julie Orringer’s THE INVISIBLE BRIDGE. When I find an author and title I love, I will go above and beyond to promote him or her.
BCC: What’s been the highlight of your blogging experience so far?
Jean: The highlight of my blogging experience so far has been meeting two of my favorite authors through the blog. Abraham Verghese, the author of CUTTING FOR STONE found my blog and made such a lovely comment. That led me to meeting him at the Miami Book Fair last fair. I met Alan Drew through his agent. Alan is the author of GARDENS OF WATER.
BCC: Do you buy most of your books or do you visit your local library?
Jean: I buy very few books these days. Lucky me. I get ARC’s from publishers and agents, and I am lucky to be able to borrow new books from work. It is one of those perks of working at a bookstore. I do get books from the public library as well.
BCC: Tell us a little bit about where you live.
Jean: I live in Bonita Springs, Florida. It is an small art town on the coast of S.W. Florida. It’s a little bit of heaven on earth. I live near the shore. Our area is very seasonal; we have what are known as “snow birds” who have homes here in the winter and “up north” in the summer.
Thanks so much Jean, it was a pleasure to ‘meet’ you and have you here on Book Chick City as part of BBAW 2010!
