I am very pleased to welcome Rachel Vincent to the blog today as part of my All Hallows Eve event. Rachel is the author of the very successful Shifter’s series about a pride of werecats – the latest, and last, instalment, ‘Alpha’, has just been released.
I also have a fantastic international giveaway of ‘Alpha’, so don’t forget to enter at the end of this post!
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Since it’s almost Halloween and Alpha, the last release in my Shifters series is now on the shelf, I want to talk about… Yup, you guessed it. Black cats!
For no logical reason I can find, black cats are often associated with evil witches (of the stereotypical, pointy-hat variety) and because of that, they’ve become a popular (if overused) subject of Halloween art and decorations.
Here in the US, I grew up hearing about black cats as a superstitious symbol of bad luck, like breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder. But recently I was told that in Europe, the black cat is most often a symbol of good luck, and I have to say, I think Europe got it right! Black cats (and black cat shapeshifters) have been nothing but good luck for me, personally.
In the summer of 2007, Stray, my first novel, hit the shelves in the US. At that same time, I was writing Pride and doing edits on Rogue, and I was living and breathing black cats. A few months earlier, #1 had given me a tiny solid black kitten, and we’d named her Kaci, after a character in Pride. Then, late that summer, another solid black cat showed up on our doorstep. A fairly large male, whom my husband named Greg, after the South Central Pride’s alpha.
Weeks later, a second cat showed up. He was kind of skinny and skittish, so my husband named him Ryan. (If you’ve read Stray, you’ll understand why.)
Weeks after that, a third cat showed up, as I was doing page proofs (the final proofreading stage) of Rogue. This latest cat was female and tailless. She was also pregnant. If you’ve read Rogue, you’ll understand why this freaked me out. And why we had to take care of this poor, homeless, pregnant manx cat.
The word was out—my backyard had become a haven for homeless black cats. Strays. Truth had become stranger than fiction.
My dad’s reaction, when I told him about this convergence of black cats, while I was writing an urban fantasy series about black cat shapeshifters?
Dad: “Don’t write about skunks!”
When Manx had her little tailless kittens, only two of them survived, and when we found both mother and kittens shivering on our back steps during an early winter ice storm, we knew we had to take them in. We gave away the larger (and meaner) of the kittens and kept the other one, a manx we named Nyx, after the goddess of night.
Nyx has been with us for three years and two moves now, and Kaci’s been with us for four years. We’re still very much a black cat kind of household, and other than the occasional hairball, I can’t point to a single incidence of bad luck. So this Halloween, to make up for torturing Faythe and her fellow Shifters werecats, I’ll be spoiling Kaci and Nyx.
What about you guys? Do you consider black cats good luck or bad luck? Do you have a cat? If so, leave me a comment telling me what kind of cat you have, and what his/her name is!
Thanks Rachel!

How gorgeous! And how pertinent to a discussion I've been having on Twitter with a few friends. These gorgeous little tots (pure black as well!) need a new home and I wish I had room for more cats! http://bit.ly/cJ2COI
As it is I have two – an adorable brother and sister pair called Jake and Kira. They're rescue cats, have been with me for four years now and I adore them to distraction. Mine are black and white!

I love black cats and funny enough I'm allergic to them but they are my weakness I'll take a ton of allergy medicine just to pet one

I´m from central Europe and black cats are too considered a bad luck around here. My neighbours have a black cat, so I really can´t be supersticious – the cat is everywhere
And the weird thing is that she is best friends with our dog, the too of them love each other and always cuddle. Weirdos..

Nope, I don't have a cat unfortunately. i've been told it depends which side of you you see them on. if you see them on the right, it's good luck. if you see them on your left, bad luck! i don't believe that though:) but it's interesting

I don't consider black cats to be bad luck, I like black cats. I currently don't have one because they aren't allowed where I live. I used to have a silver tabby and his name was Tigger.

I love cats period. No black cat superstition here!
As I am a cat lady in the making I have 4 cats. First there is Kitty, she was a stray who lived outside of my family's business a couple of cummers ago that we brought in, she was pregnant and had a whole bunch of rugrats, two of whom we kept, Runtz and Ruffles. Ruffles is honestly the love oy my life…. Ruffles and Runtz are the same gorgeous orange as their mommy.
Then came Marbles who also was a stray outside of my family's business, she is a gorgeous grey and is the sweetest thing…
Thanks a bunch of the great contest! I always love reading interviews from Rachel!

I have 1 black cat and 2 others, but Suppi, she's my love. Sadly, I'm allergic to animal hair but it doesn't stop me from loving my babies. I've had Suppi a part of my life for 8 years now and she's still a healthy and happy kitty. We named my cats after an animation that were filled with cats. Suppi happened to be a black kitty.

You're cats are adorable and I am jealous. I love cats and black cats inparticular. I was told for most of my life they were bad luck, but I chose to believe they were good luck instead.
Right now I have an amazing cat that my brother named Lily. She showed up on our doorstep a couple months ago, a hungry kitten. We couldn't refuse her! Today our little grey lioness catches mice daily. She's the only cat my dad has ever liked.

To your other question – I believe that black cats a GOOD luck.
Note: I'm highly allergic to kitties but I've grown attached to Scrub so my love spreads to all cats. I just have to take a lot of allergy medicine first. Oh and I'm very thankful that he's an indoor/outdoor cat, otherwise I wouldn't be able to live with him.

This is a terrific post! How funny that black cats started showing up when you were writing about them & basically, living & breathing black cats! Kacie & Nyx are adorable! I'm glad they have brought you good luck & not bad luck. I don't know why black cats have always been associated with bad luck, mean watches & dark magic. I have had many black cats over the years & they have always been sweet & loving and having them has been a positive experience. Now I have Dopey (not smart but very sweet!) & Lola, the best kitten ever! and they are both great.

I love cats. No matter the color. I miss my kitty so much. I had her a long time. I found her in my bushes as a kitten. Half starved, but still knew how to wrap me around her paw. She was raised by a pit bull (who loved pups and kittens) so she wasn't the most graceful cat I've had. She rulled all my dogs until she passed. One of the large dogs grieved with me because he just found her facinating and loved her so much. I think they knew she was their alpha.
*sigh* I miss her.

I had a Manx cat when I was a teenager. She was a long haired calico. Her name was Bambi. She was adorable. I also adore black cats which can be evidenced by my current cat, darling Alice. I have owned many, many cats over the years. Several years back, I had five. Sadly, they ran away and my most precious yellow tom, Ethan, died. But, having had many cats over the years, I can honestly say that black cats are truly unique in their personalities. Owning one is definitely an adventure every day!

I dont consider them bad or good luck. But they are cute.
My first cat was a Maine Coon named Bacchus. He was the sweetest thing. Huge but not fat and so cuddly.
Now I have 2 cats, one named Zeus who is still practically a kitten at 4, well at least he thinks so. Not sure what kind he is but he looks a lot like a Somali if you google that breed. The other cat I inherited and he is a black and white tuxedo named Sparticus. Who has to have some Siamese mixed into him, he can be so load and vocal, especially when I just get home. Both are rescues.

Although we live in the US, our black cats have truly been some of the best cats that we've had. Since we live in the country — many of our cats don't stick around too long. However, we had a big, black long hair cat for about 15 years (DC). We just replaced him a few weeks ago with a small, black longhair rescue kitten (Summer).

I have a cat Persi(not black), she was only a month old when a car nearly ran over her, so I take her home with me, this was seven years ago and she only wants to be with me all the time. I think she was a dog in her other life because when I throw a ball she catches it and bring it to me again.

Aw, thank you Rachel for sharing your story and the cute photos!
I agree with you, I LOVE black cats and can't understand why people are so discriminating against them, they are beautiful, elegant, regal.
I had two kittens when I was little: one of them a grey cute tabby, the other one a small black one
We have received the tabby froma friend and the day before we got him, we discovered someone had thrown a minuscule little black cat in our garden! She was so small she wasn't able to eat by herself! But we fed her and the 2 cats were so cute: the small little black orphan followed the bigger tabby one everywhere, like a big brother and his little sister
We named the tabby Bernie and the black kitten Pansy (after the flower, since that flower in Hungarian means "little orphan").
Thank you for the fantastic giveaway and have a happy Halloween Rachel!

Currently, not cats in the house and one of our dogs just passed away this week. However, I have been owned by three wonderful black cats before and LUCKY they would be… Midnight joined the family on one Friday the 13th when I was much (much) younger. Little One,that turned out to not be so little as he grew, was a sweetie and ruled the house until a wee little kitten came home. She now rules my mothers house and has had many names changes. Salem was her first name but her attitude earned her the name Sassy or Sa-sa for short.

What a cutie
I had a pretty orange kitty that I saved from a garbage can when I was a teenager. It was him & another black kitty. It was also October & our stupid humane society wouldn't take in nor sell black kittens because it was Halloween time. They claim that people buy them in October for ritual purposes. I thought it was just them being stupid but I found a home for the kitty and a few years later I thought about this and made a point to call in October to see what they'd say. They still won't take in or sell black cats or kittens in the month of October. I'd like to think that black cats are lucky because it is really hard to plan a mating to have an all black kitten in the mix. It's not like taking a red/white husky & breed it w/another red/white husky odds are good you are going to get at least 1 red/white husky pup. Thats not the case with cats from what I've been told. But anyway, yes, I love black kitty's and no, I don't think they are bad luck but in my neck of the woods their is definetly an old saying that I DON'T FOLLOW but is still told.. Black cats are 7 years bad luck and if one crosses your path you should either resign yourself to 7 years of bad luck, back up and go the other way or you better have good aim.

While I've always thought of myself as a dog person, currently I have no dogs and 4 cats that I love so much. I have a pure black male, Kitty Boy (KB or Cub), who is a bit demanding and has violent tendencies towards our youngest female, but we love him. We have Sakura-chan who shows her love and affection by coming near you, but by no means should you ever think about touching her or she will hiss and run. Then there is Scarlet who is so neurotic she has licked her back haunches bald, and she is loving and loyal as a dog (to me, she likes others, but she's my cat and wants my love and attention all day). Lastly we have Baby, who spends most of her day happily sleeping on fridge avoiding KB, until she has to sit on my bfs desk knocking things on the floor.

Hm… I don't think black cats are black luck, nor good luck. To me, they're just cats, but with different colour from others. I don't have a cat since my family is allergic to furry stuff…

I don't really like cats. Eyes glowing at me when I paid a nighty visit to the toilet? Not my kind of fun. I think black cats are neither good luck or bad luck.

Black cats are the coolest! If I could have a cat it would definitely have to be black ^^
Unfortunately, my dog hates cats so if I adopted one she would probably try to kill it /:

I don't believe in black cats bringing luck, I used to have one myself. I now have two cats: a 10-year-old female, Kitty (dark tabby with white paws, whiskers and collar), and a 2-year-old Wolfie, also a female (dark grey smoke tabby, with yellow eyes and wild character). Wolfie had a black momma and black litter siblings, so I'm really not afraid of black cats:)

Love this post! Where I am from black cats are considered good luck. I love cats and I even have one rescued furry black cat myself.

I don't have a cat. They scare me. Just a little bit. Hah!
I always thought they seemed to bring good luck, I've never experienced this, it's just kinda like a gut feeling..I'm not really very superstitious!

I think cats are mysterious creatures. I do not believe black cats are good or bad luck. They are cats just the same! I adore them just the same

I dont think black cats are bad they look mysterious to me. I had one when i was little and his name was Dusty : ) he was the best. I would get one again but my sister is not to keen on that but we did have three when we were younger.

I love cats. I don't really believe in the superstition of them being good or bad luck really. Sadly I'm not allowed any in my current house

I like dogs more than cats *ducks head to avoid projectiles* but I don't really associate black cats with bad things.

I'm not really a cat person, though my kids have been bugging me for the last 2 years to get a cat. We have two dogs so that's plenty for now
My mom had a black cat when we were growing up and her name was Go Go. She was a sweet cat and I have lots of fond memories of her, so I don't consider black cat's unlucky. Now grey cats, maybe. My step mom had a grey cat named casper and I swear that cat was posessed. That cat would hide under our bed and then jump out and attack our feet, or would pounce on us when we least expected it and clawed like crazy. That cat was pure evil!!

i don't consider them bad luck – i think it's just lucky to have a cat in your life period! our household has four cats, so we have our hands full! my fiance's cat honey is a mixed breed with thick long fur – and she's a big girl! my cat star is a siamese mix – he has blurry points and shadow stripes, and he has gorgeous blue eyes! my cat rugrat looks like a mix of every cat under the sun…and she was the runt of the litter, so she's the smallest cat of the household. "our" cat spaz is the offspring of my two cats (they got together the day before he got snipped! lol), and he's a black slinky cat that's bigger than his mother. he's a bit of a handful, as he's almost completely blind and has epilepsy, but with medication (and extra loud kitty toys!), he's doing fine.

Aww..she is beautiful!
I've always had a black cat, whether they be considered good luck or bad I don't care. Right now we have a little black kitty who's name is Bones. I named him after a fave book character but shh…don't tell the hubby. LoL He think's it's just a cool Halloweeny name. He's a super cool cat that is affectionate and let's he kids treat him like a baby doll and he has HUGE paws with six toes. He looks like a mini-panther too, really gorgeous. And I love him, if you couldn't tell by all my gushing. Hehe
Happy Halloween everyone!

I don't think black cats are bad luck but my sister does. If I'm walking with her and we pass by a black cat she makes the Sign of the Cross. I have a cat named Boo. He's an American Shorthair. I think he's cute but my sister doesn't. I always call him my baby and my sister says "He's not a baby." I love how cute he looks when he sleeps. Boo is also a ninja. He's really good at sneaking up on you.
