I have the best Christmas memories!! Christmas has always been fun, exciting, and full of wonderful family moments. Except for one year.
In Christmas 2003, I was seven months pregnant with my first child. We had just spent the morning with my inlaws where I received tons of baby stuff. I was in heaven of course! That morning, we had decided to drive the Honda Civic, rather than my hubs pick-up truck because it is easier to store presents. The forecast called for flurries – no big deal, both the inlaws and my parents live within five miles of each other.
When we were getting ready to leave, to our surprise, in the four hours we had been inside at my inlaws, about four inches of snow had fallen. And because we live in a podunk town, no plow had made its way through yet. Because it was Christmas, I was determined to make it to my parents house! So hubs and I take off – and make it about 1/2 a mile until we get stuck at the bottom of a hill. We were in the middle of the woods, with a big hill in front of us. For a reason I don’t remember we didn’t have a cell phone with us (or maybe the battery was dead?) so we couldn’t call anyone to tell them we were stuck. There was a house a little bit up the hill, deep in the woods. Now this house just looked – creepy. But it was either walk half a mile in snow with cars sliding all around us back to the inlaws, or approach the scary house. Hubs opted for the inlaws. I opted for the scary house.
So I trudged up there and knocked on the door. I could hear people inside but no one came to answer. So I knocked louder. I started to feel my pregnant hormones go into full gear. Finally, after the third round of knocking the door opened an inch. I saw an eyeball, and smelled smoke that isn’t really legal.
Before I could even utter a word, I heard the man say “we have a rabid cat, go away.”
Being stuck on Christmas day, pregnant, missing my parents – yeah – I wasn’t going anywhere. So I knocked again. This time a woman answered. I quickly pointed to our abandoned car and begged her to use her phone. She told me to wait a minute. After about five minutes she dropped a phone in my hand and closed the door. I called for help. And laid the phone on their doormat. And then as quickly as I could, got off their property.
Soon the inlaws were coming with reinforcements…and after several attempts, we somehow made it up the hill. Hooray! And even though the “scary people” were truly – scary – they did, even though very reluctantly, let us use their phone. So thank you scary people…may I never knock on your door again!
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season – and no one get stuck in the snow!!!!
Thanks Mandi!

This story totally reminds me of a Robyn Carr Virgin River book…with the scary potheads in the woods living in a shack, etc….

I don't know if I would have had the guts to knock again! Are you at least able to laugh about it now?

It sounds like that is one of those memories that gets better with time! I don't know if I'd be able to knock on the door a second time either…
