In My Mailbox (#26)

Hi all! This week was pretty good for books. I received six for review but bought none *gasp*. I have also been having a bit of a nightmare with a reoccurring sports injury to my neck the last couple of weeks and I haven't been able to read at all until the last couple of days where I can read for about fifteen minutes at a time - very annoying. But I've been having lots of intensive sports physio and it is getting better.
Because of my stupid neck thing I can only read for short periods and to read an entire book would take me all week and as I would like to keep reviews coming, I have decided to review the Zombie Anthology book that I received last week for review. The stories are short so I can read and review them throughout the week, I think this is a good way to review the book anyway, so it fits in well. So next week is my 'Unofficial Zombie Week'! *g*

The recent Strigoi attack at St. Vladimir’s Academy was the deadliest ever in the school’s history, claiming the lives of Moroi students, teachers, and guardians alike. He’d rather die than be one of them, and now Rose must abandon her best friend, Lissa—the one she has sworn to protect no matter what—and keep the promise Dimitri begged her to make long ago. But with everything at stake, how can she possibly destroy the person she loves most?

The Midnight Guardian
Sarah Jane Stratford (St Martin's Press)
Publication Date: 13 Oct 2009
Hardback: 292 pages
Genre: Fantasy
Tags: Vampires
Amazon Summary:
Although it is not the vampire way to interfere with human politics, they remember the destruction of the first World War. Their food supply was badly depleted, leading to a vampire famine, and a devastating vampire war. When London's vampire tribunal senses that Hitler is paving the way for another human war, they are determined to break the spine of the Nazis before much more damage is done. But as they delve deep into Hitler's war machine, they discover that the Nazis are more monstrous than they ever imagined, and that they are more encumbered by their inhumanity than they ever thought.
A vampire saga in the tradition of "The Vampire Chronicles", the debut title in this exciting new series follows the beautiful and cunning Brigit's attempt to escape from the continent and return to her long-time lover Eamon in London, while shepherding out dangerous cargo that is the only hope of salvaging their mission. As Brigit, a millennial vampire, over a thousand-years old and possessed of special powers earned by age, hurls toward her destiny on a Reich train, she is tailed by vampire hunters and Nazi officers out to destroy her. Her soul's eternal love waits for her across the channel, and she'll need his strength and the strains of humanity yet alive inside her if she's ever to find her way back home.

But Lex’s luck is about to run out because the Goddess of Fortune has selected him to be her player in the highly dangerous Games. Losing is not an option for Lex (particularly as it so often involves dying) but can he really win each of the perilous rounds? Given that the reward for doing so is money, fame and glory – all things that Lex is quite keen on – he’s going to do whatever it takes to make sure he will... and he’s certainly got good experience of cheating.

New Blogs on the Block: Natalie from Mindful Musings

This is the very last New Blogs on the Block here on Book Chick City. However, you will be able to find NBOTB at Larissa's blog starting 6th Feb. If you want to know more go HERE. But today I welcome the lovely...
Natalie
1. When and why did you start blogging?
I started blogging at the end of August. I've always loved to read, and I had started keeping a journal where I wrote down my opinions of the books I'd read. I was on the Internet one day browsing through random sites when I started coming across book blogs and was like I could do this! I started writing more in-depth reviews and posting them online, found a few blogger buddies and the rest is history!
2. Tell us a little about your blog?
Mindful Musings is a YA centered blog, though I do review the occasional classic or adult novel. The whole idea behind my blog is to give teen readers my honest opinions on the latest and greatest young adult books, along with news on upcoming releases and author spotlights.

3. Are there any features on your blog you would like to highlight?
I've recently started a weekly Follower Feature. Many of my followers have their own book blogs, and a few were having trouble getting traffic when they first started out. I started posting now and then about their blogs, then decided to make it a weekly feature. Every week I highlight a blog or two that one of my followers runs. It's been working great so far!
4. What's been the high point of blogging so far?
The people, hands down. I never thought I could grow to love an online community so much! Everyone I've met so far has been wonderful, and everybody always seems so willing to help each other out! I love hearing everyone's opinions on my posts, and I enjoy doing the same for other people!

Natalie's TBR Pile
5. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm a college sophomore majoring in Global Studies and English with a minor in Spanish. Music and books are my first loves, and I'm always spending my free time trying to discover great new artists or authors. I love to meet new people and hear about their opinions and life experiences, especially if they're willing to discuss books with me!
6. What's your favourite book of all time?
Tough question. As of now, it would have to be City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. But that could change tomorrow, next week, or even by dinner!

Natalie's Favourite Book
7. Who are your favourite authors?
Hmmm....I'll try to keep this list somewhat limited. Cassandra Clare, Lisa Klein, Claudia Gray, Richelle Mead, Libba Bray, Maggie Stiefvater, Michael Grant, Becca Fitzpatrick, J.K. Rowling, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Shakespeare, and Wilkie Collins.
8. How many books are on your tbr list right now?
According to Goodreads? 403. It seems to grow exponentially every day.
9. Where do you see your blog in a year from now?
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I'll have 500 followers by my one-year blogoversary. I'd like to do more author interviews and giveaways, since I've only done two so far. Some day I'd love to be as established as Kristi at The Story Siren, but I think that'll take more than a year :).
Thanks so much for featuring me!
You're welcome & thanks Natalie!

Cover Crush - UK Edition: The Cold Kiss of Death by Suzanne McLeod
It seems that this week is all about new book covers! Another cover released by Gollancz, The Cold Kiss of Death by Suzanne McLeod, book two in the Spellcrackers series. I absolutely love it and think it's much nicer than the previous cover! What do you guys think?

Her witch neighbours want her evicted. Genny's sort-of-Ex - and now her new boss - can't decide whether he wants their relationship to be business or pleasure. And then there's the queue of vampires all wanting her to paint the town red - how long will it be before they stop taking no for an answer?
But when one of her human friends is murdered by sidhe magic, Genny is determined to find the killer. She needs help to find the real murderer, and that means calling on some of the most capricious and seductive fae - but her search is hindered by the vampires, who have their own political agenda. All the evidence points to Genny - she's the only sidhe fae in London - and she's named the main suspect; it's not long before she's on the run, not just from the police, but from some of London's most powerful supernaturals.

Cover Crush - UK Edition: Immortality Bites Series by Michelle Rowen
Gollancz in the UK is publishing the Immortality Bites series by Michelle Rowen and here are the covers for the first two books in the series, Bitten & Smitten and Fanged & Fabulous. I am really liking these covers, they do remind me a little bit of the covers for the Sookie Stackhouse series, but I think they are eye catching and classy. I will definitely be buying this series! Tell me what you guys think - do you like them better than the US Editions?
Bitten & Smitten, Book 1

July 2010
Gollancz (Paranormal Romance)
Summary
Sarah Dearly’s blind date has an unexpected outcome; she has become a vampire. Soon Sarah encounters suicidal master vampire Thierry de Bennicoeur. Thierry agrees to help Sarah learn how to live as a vampire if she will help him end his life. But in Sarah he might have found his reason for living. (Gollancz)
Fanged & Fabulous, Book 2

August 2010
Gollancz (Paranormal Romance)
Summary
My name is Sarah Dearly, and I've got major problems. Last month, I was turned into a vampire by the world's worst blind date. Then I may have, totally by accident, started a war between the mostly peaceful bloodsuckers and a bunch of sociopathic vamp hunters who have nicknamed me the Slayer of Slayers. Now I'm being used as bait to draw out the hunters' bad-ass leader, while my gorgeous 600-year-old boyfriend Thierry seems to be blowing me off, and my sizzle-hot, fanged friend Quinn is trying to turn my self-defense lessons into make-out sessions. So you know what? I'm done. I've had it. There comes a time when a vamp has to just suck it up and go after what she wants. And as soon as I figure out what that is, that's exactly what I'll do...
