BCC's Most Anticipated Reads for 2011!

2010 was a pretty good year for books, but not brilliant (well, the ones I read anyway). There were a few stand out books for me such as the 'Downside Ghosts' series by Stacia Kane and the 'Vampire Academy' series by Richelle Mead, but very few made the rating of 10/10, 9/10, or even 8/10. I know, I'm so harsh! ;)
But 2011 looks like it's going to be a bumper year for outstanding books, I hope they all meet my expectations. Some of the one's I've listed may have already been released in the US but may not be published here in the UK. So, without further ado, here are most anticipated reads for 2011, in no particular order...
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••
1. 'Breathers' by S. G. Browne (Piatkus, March 2011) - Zombie Fiction
Meet Andy Warner, recently deceased everyman and newly minted zombie. Resented by his parents, abandoned by his friends, and reviled by society, Andy is having trouble adjusting. But at an Undead Anonymous meeting he finds kindred souls in Rita, an impossibly sexy recent suicide with a taste for formaldehyde, and Jerry, a car-crash victim with a penchant for Renaissance pornography. When a rogue zombie introduces the group to the joys of human flesh, things start to get messy, and Andy embarks on a journey of self-discovery that takes him from his casket to a media-driven class-action lawsuit on behalf of the rights of zombies everywhere.

2. '13 Bullets' by David Wellington (Lara Caxton Vampire Series #1) (Piatkus, April 2011) - Vampire Horror
One night, Laura Caxton, a State Trooper working highway patrol, finds out her true destiny: hunting down the immortal predators that haunt the night searching for our blood. Her only ally is Jameson Arkeley, a US Marshal who has devoted his life to hunting down vampires, long after everyone else thought they were extinct.

3. 'The Edinburgh Dead' by Brian Ruckley (Orbit, August 2011) - Steampunk Fantasy
Edinburgh, 1827. It’s a city populated by mad alchemists who treat Frankenstein as textbook rather than novel, and by a criminal underclass prepared to deal with the darkest of powers. And one officer – from the recently formed Edinburgh City Police – must follow the trail of undead hounds, emptied graves, brutal murders and mob violence into the deepest and darkest corners of Edinburgh’s underworld – both literal and magical – and back again to the highest reaches of elegant, intellectual Edinburgh society.

4. 'Legion' by William Pater Blatty (Tor, Feb 2011) - Horror
A young boy is found horribly murdered in a mock crucifixion. Is the murderer the elderly woman who witnessed the crime? A neurologist who can no longer bear the pain life inflicts on its victims? A psychiatrist with a macabre sense of humor and a guilty secret? A mysterious mental patient, locked in silent isolation? Lieutenant Kinderman follows a bewildering trail that links all these people, confronting a new enigma at every turn even as more murders surface. Why does each victim suffer the same dreadful mutilations? Why are two of the victims priests? Is there a connection between these crimes and another series of murders that took place twelve years ago—and supposedly ended with the death of the killer?

5. 'The Good Fairies of New York' by Martin Millar (Piatkus, Jan 2011) - Urban Fantasy
Morag and Heather, two eighteen-inch fairies with swords, green kilts and badly dyed hair fly through the window of the worst violinist in New York, an overweight and antisocial type named Dinnie, and vomit on his carpet. Who they are, how they came to New York and what this has to do with the lovely Kerry - who lives across the street, and has Crohn's Disease, and is making a flower alphabet - and what this has to do with the other fairies (of all nationalities) of New York, not to mention the poor repressed fairies of Britain, is the subject of this book. It has a war in it, and a most unusual production of Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Johnny Thunders' New York Dolls guitar solos. What more could anyone desire from a book?

6. 'A Werewolf in Manhattan' by Vicki Lewis Thompson (Wild About You #1) (Signet, Jan 2011) - Paranormal Romance
Emma Gavin writes about werewolves, but that doesn't mean she believes in them-not until a pack of real-life New York weres decide to investigate the striking accuracy of her "fiction". When Aiden Wallace, son and heir of the pack leader, tries to sniff out Emma's potential informant, he discovers something even more dangerous- an undeniable attraction to her.
7. 'Mermaid' by Carolyn Turgeon (Headline, March 2011) - Fantasy
While in hiding at a remote convent, a king’s daughter sees a magical being dragging a shipwrecked man to the shore. The creature is a mermaid princess – the youngest daughter of the Sea Queen – but she shares more with her human counterpart than her royal blood. By saving a young man’s life, both women have sacrificed their hearts. In one moment, the lives of the princesses, mortal and mermaid, are transformed forever.

8. 'Allison Hewitt is Trapped' by Madeleine Roux (Headline, Feb 2011) - Zombie Fiction
Based on the popular blog ALLISON HEWITT IS TRAPPED, the novel follows Allison who is trapped in the storeroom of Brookes & Peabody's in a world swarming with the Undead, the Doomed, the Infected! Locked away with an oddball collection of colleagues and under siege, Allison takes advantage of a surviving internet connection and blogs. She writes, as the food runs out and panic sets in, as relationships develop and friends die, and as zombies claw at the door, all in the hope of connecting with other survivors out there. But as she reads the replies to her posts, Allison begins to comprehend the horrifying scale of the damage. And when no one comes to the group's rescue, they are forced to leave the safety of their room and risk a journey across the city; streets that crawl with zombies, and worse - fellow humans competing for survival.

9. 'License To Ensorcell' by Katherine Kerr (DAW, Feb 2011) - Urban Fantasy
Psychic Agent Nola O'Grady isn't sure returning to San Francisco, and living near her unusual family, is a good idea. Her job, with a psychic agency so obscure even the CIA doesn't know it exists, can be perilous, and she's afraid of the relatives getting involved. Then the Agency saddles her with Israeli secret agent Ari Nathan, and she has a bigger problem on her hands, because tact and compromise are not Ari's strong points. Their mission is to track down a serial killer obsessed with werewolves. He sees them everywhere and shoots whenever he thinks he has one in his sights. Ari assumes the man's psychotic, but in truth he's murdering actual werewolves. Nola should know. Her younger brother Pat, a lycanthrope, was the first victim. Can Nola's psychic talents and Ari's skill with guns keep them alive long enough to unravel the greater mystery behind the killings? Can they save the werewolves and the world while stopping Nola's family from running headlong into danger?

10. 'Married with Zombies' by Jesse Peterson (Simon & Schuster, Feb 2011) Zombie Fiction
Meet Sarah and David. Sarah and David are like any other couple. They met, they fell in love, but now they're on the verge of divorce. On a routine trip to the marriage counsellor, they notice a few odd things -- the lack of cars on the road, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counsellor, Dr Kelly, is ripping out her previous client's throat. Meet the zombies. Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But just because there are zombies, it doesn't mean your other problems go away. And if the zombies don't eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

What books are you looking forward to reading in 2011?

BOOK REVIEW: 'Blacklands' by Belinda Bauer
Title: Blacklands
Author: Belinda Bauer
Publisher: Corgi
Publication Date: 2nd Jan 2011
Paperback: 346 pages
Genre: Crime
Source: Review Copy
Reviewed by: Carolyn

RATING: 6/10
GOODREADS SUMMARY:
A psychological thriller about the cat-and-mouse game between a boy desperately seeking the truth about this uncle's murder and the murderer himself.
REVIEW:
'Blacklands' is a debut crime novel that is very well written and immensely compelling. However, I can't say I enjoyed it as 'Blacklands' is a very bleak novel in its outlook and subject matter.
Steven is a twelve year old boy living in an unloving household with his brother, Davey. Many years ago, before he was born, Steven's mother, Lettie, lost her brother Billy to a serial killer and pedophile. Lettie and her mother (Steven's nan - Mrs Peters) never got to know where Billy's body was buried and this inability to find closure made them very bitter, and to be honest, not very nice people. I didn't like Lettie and Mrs Peters characters at all. I felt no compassion for them as they were just so nasty and spiteful. Although their lives had been filled with pain, I didn't feel any tolerance for their behaviour towards Steven.
After Billy went missing Mrs Peters took out her pain on her daughter and now her daughter takes out her pain on her son. Steven has to deal with this on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I found this to be rather stereotypical characterisation. Everything possible was thrown at this family; a mother bringing up her children without a father; lots of different boyfriend or 'uncles' as Steven calls them; bitter mother, bitter nan and poverty stricken.
Despite Steven's unloving family, who take their unhappiness and frustrations out on him, it's a total surprise how he grew up to be such a loving, caring and empathic child, especially as he didn't have anything remotely caring in his life as he grew up.
As well as having to deal with everything at home Steven also has a horridly selfish and not very nice best friend, Lewis, and is bullied badly at school by three boys he calls 'the hoodies'. To be honest, it's a wonder Steven can gather the will to actually leave his bed in the morning!
Although I liked Steven I did find some of his actions a bit beyond his years. At the age of twelve he decides to write a letter to Arnold Avery, the serial killer who killed his Uncle Billy all those years ago, with the hope he would tell him where his body was buried. The reason is the expectation that his Nan and mother would be so happy they would love him a bit more. His other pasttime is digging up the moors with the hope of finding Uncle Billy's body. He's been doing this for three years. This means he would have started this morbid activity at the age of nine. Really?
It's difficult for me to believe that at nine years of age Steven came to the conclusion that by finding his Uncle Billy's body would make his nan and mother happy and therefore they would love him more. I understand that some children can be astute but I felt that this was taking things a bit too far.
This book is incredibly disheartening and doesn't contain an ounce of hope until the very end. It's bittersweet for me as it only seems to materialise after the serial killer tries to strangle the life out of Steven back on the moors. Steven survives but it's only at this point he receives the slightest bit of warmth from his mother and Nan. Isn't it sad that it had to come to this, with only his possible death the catalyst for love.
The pacing in 'Blacklands' is very good and each chapter drives you forward to read the next. The characters although unlikable, except for Steven, are all very well rounded. The story also jumps about a bit with the thoughts of Arnold Avery, the serial killer remembering past conquests and kills and then his thoughts jumping back to his present. It's a testament to the authors writing skills that I didn't get lost or confused and the story and plot were clear.
Arnold Avery is a very unsavoury character. Hearing his thoughts about the children he abused, raped and murdered made for uncomfortable reading but Ms Bauer wrote with conviction and I felt as though I really was in the mind of a sadistic serial killer and pedophile. His escape from prison and his journey towards Steven was chilling and suspenseful even if the ending was a little anti-climactic.
VERDICT:
So, did I enjoy this book - well, not really, but it isn't because of how this book is written, as it's written very well and with a certain amount of accomplishment, but I did find 'Blacklands' to be very depressing and the characters too predictable and a bit cliched, although this may be due to 'Blacklands' being the authors first novel. However, I will definitely be reading the Ms Bauer's next novel, Darkside, published 6th Jan 2011.

'Where Stories Are Made' with science fiction author, Jaine Fenn

'Where Stories Are Made' is a regular feature here at Book Chick City. It's where the author takes us on a tour of their writing place, be it an office, coffee shop or park and tells us about their writing day and rituals.
My guest today is science fiction author, Jaine Fenn...
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I write in a garret. Okay, technically speaking it's a loft conversion, but it's under the eaves, lit by a skylight, and – most importantly of all – it can only be accessed by wooden ladder. That's close enough to a garret for me. Having a dedicated writing space isolated from the rest of the house is incredibly useful for someone with my (lack of) attention span and t'garret (as I call it) was a major factor in our decision to move here.

In keeping with distraction avoidance, the computer I write on has no internet connection. Being married to a geek, you have no idea how hard it is to keep my desktop machine downgraded to the status of a glorified typewriter and music centre.
Ah yes, music. The computer has on it fifty or so albums that I've found, by long experimentation, make good music to write to. They range in style from baroque through trance, from dub to grunge. The choice of music depends entirely on what I'm writing. The one thing I don't write to is silence.
A lot of my thinking time involves either staring at my 'daydream wall' of interesting pictures, which you can just see in the background below the skylight, or tipping back my chair and staring up through the skylight at the clouds. At times when the words aren't flowing I become an expert on the cloud formations of central Hampshire.
I try and keep my immediate working area clutter-free, though this gets harder as a book delivery deadline approaches; I handed in my last book, Bringer of Light, ten days ago, and my current 'to do' list includes tidying up t'garret before I get too far into the next book. The copies of my previous novels by the desk aren't just there for vanity - I'm writing a series, so I frequently need to refer back to them. All right, there is an element of vanity: I could just use the electronic files, but I'm still relatively new to the life of a professional author, and the novelty of leafing through a book I actually wrote hasn't worn off yet.

As you can see there are bookshelves in t'garret; you can also see the top of the ladder I mentioned on the left of this picture. Because t'garret is the only part of the house that's exclusively my space, the shelves contain a fair few non-book personal items. Which at the moment includes a calender showing a farmer in the buff. What can I say, I live in the country. More respectably I've got assorted reference works including Gray's Anatomy, the Writer's Handbook and a variety of dictionaries along with guest books brought in from elsewhere in the house for the current novel. Right now this includes a Welsh dictionary and a copy of Milton's Paradise Lost; as I get to grips with my next book I expect to replace the Welsh dictionary with book(s) on code-breaking, though the Milton gets to stay on for a while.
Though the actual words get put down (and revised, and revised again) in t'garret, there's more to the process than that. Before the words come out, the story needs to ferment. For this, I need outdoor thinking time combined with gentle exercise. Or, as I call it, a plot walk. The number of plot walks I get in a given week varies according to the stage of a novel I'm at, the weather, and the other demands on my time.

I'm lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of southern England and my usual plot walk takes me along country lanes before reaching a crystal-clear trout stream. The bridge in the picture above comes about a quarter of the way into the walk and has a conveniently placed, if currently rather grubby, railing. A fair amount of plot has been jotted down whilst leaning on that railing. You're not seeing the view at its best right now, but in summer the surrounding countryside is glorious.

This final picture shows my favourite tree, an aspen with a wide fork in the trunk, also looking a bit sad in the winter light. This 'thinking tree' occurs about half way along my usual route. I like to climb up into that fork then sit with my back against the thick trunk on the right and one leg dangling over the river while I watch the fish, think and scribble the odd note. What do you mean, I'm too old to climb trees? I think not.

BCC's Most Anticipated YA Reads for 2011!

In 2010 I read over 25 YA novels and throughly enjoyed most of them. There are quite a few coming out next year (mainly spring/summer that I know of) and I think it's going to be an exciting year for YA. So here are my top ten UK picks for 2011!
1. 'I Don't Want To Kill You' by Dan Wells (Headline, 13th Jan 2011)
Sixteen-year-old John Wayne Cleaver has always known he’s different, but not because he only has one friend (and doesn’t much like him) and not because he regularly helps out in his mother’s mortuary. He’s different because he recognizes the classic signs of an incipient serial killer in his own personality, and he’s created a rigid set of rules to follow to keep his darker nature, the one he calls Mr Monster in check. But John discovers it’s the personality traits he so fears that put him in the best position to save the people of his town from a series of horrific and disturbing killers...

2. 'Rot & Ruin' by Jonathan Maberry (Simon & Schuster, 3rd March 2011)
In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human.

3. 'Awakened' by P. C. & Kristin Cast (House of Night #8) (Atom, 4th Jan 2011)
At the start of Awakened, the pulse-pounding eighth installment of the bestselling House of Night series, Zoey has returned, mostly whole, from the Otherworld to her rightful place as High Priestess at the House of Night. Her friends are just glad to have her back, but after losing her human consort, Heath, will Zoey - or her relationship with her super-hot Warrior, Stark - ever be the same? Stevie Rae is drawn even closer to Rephaim, the Raven Mocker with whom she shares a mysterious and powerful Imprint, but he is a dangerous secret that isolates her from her school, her red fledglings, and even her best friends. When the dark threat of Neferet - who is coming closer and closer to achieving her twisted goal of immortality - and Kalona returns, what will it take to keep the House of Night from being lost forever, and what will one desperate girl do to keep her heart from being irreparably broken?

4. 'The Gathering' by Kelley Armstrong (Dark Rising #1) (Atom, 11th April 2011)
Maya lives in a small medical-research town on Vancouver Island. How small? You can’t find it on the map. It has less than two-hundred people, and her school has only sixty-eight students—for every grade from kindergarten to twelve. Now, strange things are happening in this claustrophobic town, and Maya's determined to get to the bottom of them. First, the captain of the swim team drowns mysteriously in the middle of a calm lake. A year later, mountain lions start appearing around Maya's home, and they won’t go away. Her best friend, Daniel, starts getting negative vibes from certain people and things. It doesn't help that the new bad boy in town, Rafe, has a dangerous secret—and he's interested in one special part of Maya's anatomy: Her paw-print birthmark.

5. 'Chasers' by James Phelan (Alone #1) (Atom, 2nd June 2011)
Jesse is on a school trip in New York when his subway carriage is rocked by an explosion. When he and three friends crawl out of the wreckage they discover a city in chaos. Streets are deserted. Buildings are in ruins. And the only other survivors seem infected with a virus that turns them into horrifying predators...

6. 'Low Red Moon' by Ivy Devlin (Bloomsbury, 7th Feb 2011)
Avery Hood is reeling from the loss of her parents--and the fact that she can't remember what happened to them even though she was there. She's struggling to adjust to life without them, and to living with her grandmother, when she meets Ben, who isn't like any guy she's ever met before. It turns out there's a reason why, and Ben's secret may hold the key to Avery finding out what happened to her parents... But what if that secret changes everything she knows about--and feels for--Ben?

7. 'Nightshade' by Andrea Cremer (Nightshade #1) (Atom, 20th Jan 2011)
Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything--including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

8. 'Rosebush' by Michele Jaffe (Atom, 3rd March 2011)
Instead of celebrating Memorial Day weekend on the Jersey shore, Jane is in the hospital surrounded by teddy bears, trying to piece together what happened last night. One minute she was at a party, wearing fairy wings and cuddling with her boyfriend. The next, she was lying near-dead in a rosebush after a hit and run. Everyone thinks it was an accident, despite the phone threats Jane swears were real. But the truth is a thorny thing. As Jane's boyfriend, friends, and admirers come to visit, more memories surface--not just from the party, but from deeper in her past...including the night her best friend Bonnie died. With nearly everyone in her life a suspect now, Jane must unravel the mystery before her killer attacks again. Along the way, she is forced to examine the consequences of her life choices in this compulsively readable thriller.

9. 'Immortal Beloved' by Cate Tiernan (Hodder & Stroughton, 6th Jan 2011)
New name, new town, new life. Nastasya has done it too often to count. And there's no end in sight. Nothing ever really ends ...when you're immortal. But now, after centuries of feeding from the lives of the innocents around her, of living with little care for others, Nastasya is ready to turn towards the light. 'After some of the events I've witnessed I felt like I was a shell with nothing alive left in me. I hadn't been going around killing people, but people were hurt -- the memories just kept trickling in like rivulets of fresh acid dripping into my brain until I wanted to scream. It was in my blood, I knew. A darkness. The darkness. I had inherited it, along with my immortality and my black eyes.' Captivating, intense and with an incredible and original voice, EVERLASTING LIFE is a haunting story of friendship, love and secrets, tragedy and loss. Sometimes life is eternal...

10. 'The Iron Witch' by Karen Mahoney (The Ironbridge Chronicles #1) (Corgi, 3rd Feb 2011)
Freak. That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna's own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma. When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.

So, what are your most anticipated YA reads for 2011?
