During the month of February I will be celebrating UK publishers and the books they publish. There will be posts from editors and publicists revealing some of their upcoming titles for 2011 as well as giving us a glimpse into their working lives. I will also be reviewing some of their titles and there will be lots of UK giveaways too. Enjoy!
Hi! Thanks for inviting me onto Book Chick City! My name is Ally and I’m the Digital Sales and Marketing Manager for Simon & Schuster UK. This basically means that I’m the ‘online go to girl’ – from the website, to social media, to eBook sales and online marketing campaigns, I’m lucky enough to be able to have a hand in all of these for S&S UK.
No day is typical at S&S UK, you can start off the day trudging up Gray’s Inn Road to the office in the rain thinking that the day is going to be as disastrous as your attempt at blow drying your hair, but end with a surprise cupcake made by the baking goddess that is our Marketing Director, a lovely email from an author and Photoshop actually doing what it’s told for once! I’ve been at S&S UK for three years in March and can honestly say that no day is the same, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m a big reader and always have at least two books or manuscripts on the go. I read everything from chick lit to zombies, with my absolute guilty pleasure being anything with celebrities… I love a bit of scandalous gossip!
Twitter – Follow me @simonschusterUK or @multi_als or both!
At S&S, we’ve got books to whet all appetites (shameless plug alert – check out our website www.simonandschuster.co.uk), below are some choices that I’m particularly excited about and hope that BCC readers will be too!
2011 Highlights for Book Chick City
Married with Zombies – Jesse Petersen – Out Now!
A great new take on the zombie genre! EAT, SLAY, LOVE will be published later on this year…
Meet Sarah and David. Sarah and David are like any other couple. They met, they fell in love, but now they’re on the verge of divorce. On a routine trip to the marriage counsellor, they notice a few odd things — the lack of cars on the road, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counsellor, Dr Kelly, is ripping out her previous client’s throat.
Meet the zombies. Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But just because there are zombies, it doesn’t mean your other problems go away. And if the zombies don’t eat their brains, they might just kill each other.
Hellhole – Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert – Out Now!
The first in a brand new series for the writing partnership behind the DUNE prequels.

Only the most desperate would ever dare to make a new home on Hellhole, a planet ravaged by natural disasters. Persistent volcanic eruptions, destructive storms and recent damage inflicted by asteroid impact make the planet a dumping ground for undesirables, misfits and charlatans. But its location out on the wild frontiers of the Constellation, among the Deep Zone worlds, makes it the final refuge for those fleeing from the rule of Diadem Michella Duchenet – a tyrant with a sweet face, but a dark and heardened heart.
General Adolphus, the military leader exiled to the planet when he was defeated in the first revolution against the Diadem, is determined to transform Hellhole into a place of opportunity. While the colonists are diligently working to develop the planet, the General is forging secret alliances with the leaders of the other Deep Zone worlds. He dreams of turning his prison into the centre of a new coalition of planets free from the Diadem’s iron grip.
Back on the decadent capital planet of Sonjeera, surrounded by corruption and consumed by the plots and feuds of the old guard nobles, Diadem Michella is confident that the General has been neutralized. She has no idea of the revolt growing in the Deep Zone . . . or does she?
But what no one knows is this: the planet Hellhole, though damaged and volatile, hides secrets of historic magnitude. Lurking beneath the surface are the remnants of an obliterated alien civilization, detailing an unrecorded past, which, if unearthed, could tear the fragile human civilization apart.
Waking Nightmares – Christopher Golden – May 2011
Christopher Golden returns to his legendary vampire series. The first four books were published in the nineties, but over the last year we at S&S UK have re-published them in the build up to the return of Peter Octavian.
When chaos erupts in the small coastal town of Hawthorne, Massachusetts, former vampire-turned-mage Peter Octavian and earthwitch Keomany Shaw arrive to investigate.
Years ago, Octavian helped expose the secret existence of vampires to the world, dismantling the Vatican’s sorcery corps in order to save his fellow shadows from destruction. But without the Vatican sorcerers, the magical barriers they spent centuries constructing to keep the forces of darkness out of our world are beginning to fail, and things are slipping through.
Now an ancient god of chaos is awakening in Hawthorne, its influence spreading…and it’s Octavian’s fault. If he can’t stop it, the blood of all human kind will be on his hands.
Kresley Cole Series
Simon & Schuster UK are re-jacketing the Immortals After Dark series – the new book in the series is out in March!
Dreams of a dark warrior – Kresley Cole – March 2011
A ruthless Norse warrior will defeat anything standing between him and his beautiful obsession – even Death itself.
A millennium ago, Aidan the Fierce lost his heart to the Valkyrie Regin the Radiant, but he was murdered before he could win her. Since then, he has reincarnated into different identities, with his memory of the past buried deep. This time he has returned as Declan Chase, a human soldier bent on exterminating all immortals – including Regin, his newest captive.
The proud Northman that Regin still mourns has been replaced by a twisted madman. Once tortured by immortals, Chase now metes out vengeance against them, and he’s fixated on her. Regin’s only hope is to make him remember her, though she knows that whenever he recovers his memories, history will repeat itself, and he’ll be lost to her again. . . .
Robopocalypse – Daniel H. Wilson – 9th June 2011
A HUGE book for this summer! Film rights have been sold and Steven Spielberg is directing!
Two decades into the future humans are battling for their very survival when a powerful AI computer goes rogue, and all the machines on earth rebel against their human controllers. The machines believe that the planet would be better off without humans, and that robots would be better caretakers of the earth’s ecology. The robot war wages for five brutal years, but in the end humanity triumphs.
Twenty minutes after the war ends, Sergeant Cormac ‘Bright Boy’ Wallace is exterminating robots in the Alaskan wilderness when he finds a machine containing a an information cube – the robots’ black box on the entire war. Inside are thousands of accounts of humans designated ‘heroes’ by the machines; from children to soldiers – those who fought, and those who died. A few individual robots also rejected the super-AI’s homicidal campaign and join with human forces to save their collective freedom. Robopocalypse tells the story of humanity’s battle to survive, with fry cooks and ordinary citizens battling rogue smart cars and independent-minded kitchen appliances, while government scientists take on murderous supercomputers.
Thanks Ally!

Robopocalypse and Hellhole look very interesting. The Hellhole I think it will not disappoint. Who loves the Dune books, they will be good reading. There is another book, which unfortunately has not had any luck.
