Do you ever want to rush the book you’re reading

just to get onto the next?

As you all know I love books, I love reading – hence the blog. But the more books and authors I find the more I want to read. Alas I’m not a very fast reader, I probably get through 1-2 per week. But since I’ve started blogging and receiving books for review I have been exposed to so many new-to-me authors and novels that I have become a greedy reader. I want to read everything, like NOW!

I find myself getting frustrated with how long it’s taking me to finish a book I’m reading just so I can get onto the next, even if I’m enjoying it. There are only a few instances that I have been so utterly engrossed and immersed in a story that this hasn’t happened (‘Downside Ghosts’ series by Stacia Kane and ‘Vampire Academy’ series by Richelle Mead come to mind).

I have a zillion new series I want to start and yet when I do get round to starting one of these coveted series I still catch myself eyeing up the next sitting on my shelf. I am a book tart.

I can’t list them all otherwise this post would go on for far too long, but here are some of the series I currently have on my bookshelves waiting to be read or needing to be finished:

Haven’t Started:

Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh (Gollancz)
Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (Orbit)
Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead (Bantam Press)
Raine Benares series by Lisa Shearin (Ace)
Black Dagger Brotherhood by J. R. Ward (Piatkus)
Corine Solomon series by Ann Aguirre (Gollancz)
Riley Jenson Guardian series by Keri Arthur (Piatkus)
The Disillusionists Trilogy by Carolyn Crane
Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris (Gollancz)

Want to Finish/Get up-to-date:

Anita Blake series by Laurel K. Hamilton (Headline)
V. I. Warshawski series by Sara Paretsky (Hodder)
Kate Daniels series by ILona Andrews (Gollancz)
Chicagoland Vampires series by Chloe Neill (Gollancz)
Blood Ties series by Jennifer Armintrout (Mira)
Jane True series by Nicole Peeler (Orbit)
Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich (Headline)
Greywalker series by Kat Richardson (Piatkus)
Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas (Piatkus)

See? How can anybody have so many fantastic books and not want to gobble them up all at once?! If you think I should read or finish one series over another then let me know! Of course, this is only a small selection of the series I have, not to mention all the stand alone novels I want to devour! *sigh*

So, do you ever want to rush the book you’re reading just to get onto the next?

Yes, I do that all the time. Actually I am reading three books at the same time.

Yes, especially when the book in question is trying my patience!

Yep, all the time. Because of this I'm usually reading two or three books, plus listening to an audio.

I love Jane True. My personal opinion is that the Anita Blake books go down hill instead of getting any better. A whole lot of the the same with no evolution of the main character. She was sort of 'topped out' when she became 'invincible'.

Blackdagger Brotherhood AWESOME!!!!!!! hehehehe This is just my opinion of course.

I agree with you. I look at all the great books on my shelves and I want to get to all of those books all at once. This is especially true right now since I'm reading a book that isn't holding my attention but I'm
2/3rds of the way done with it so I feel I should just finish it so I can move on to all the other great books.

I would recommend the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, it is great.

I never read more than one book at a time, as I like to read a book thoroughly and concentrate on it.

I try never to give up on a book, no matter how hard going it may be.

I do always have the next book I am going to read, selected and at the top of the pile, as I couldn't bear to finish a book, then have to go searching for the next, it has to be at hand and ready to start immediately.

I always have a book on the go.

Katia – Hehe, I'm glad I'm not the only one!

heidenkind – Very true, if a book isn't as good as I'd hoped then I'm chomping at the bit to finish it so I can get on to hopefully something better!

Anna – I usually have a couple of books on the go at the same time but I haven't managed to get hooked into audiobooks yet. I've tried one or two though, but usually just fall asleep LOL

Linds – I've read book #1 of Jane True and liked it but didn't love it (6/10), but I'm really wanted to get up-to-date with the series as everyone says it gets better. I've read up to book #10 Anita Blake and I loved her character, but I think I've got a soft spot for her as she's the very first urban fantasy I read. I've heard the same things as you're saying from many peeps but I still want to finish the series. BDB is raved about where ever I turn LOL maybe that's the series I should start next ;)

Alexa – I agree, if a book isn't holding my attention then I tend to want to get it over and done with so I can move onto some of the other great looking books. Another BDB vote! ;)

Fiction-books – I read all my books thoroughly if it is a good book whether I have another on the go or not. I think I've only ever given up on two books as I also don't like to give up on a book, I'm always the optimist that it will have a killer ending I didn't see coming LOL

Been there. Some books awfully drag and then you receive or buy a book you really want to read. Now. That certainly speeds up the reading of my current book as I don't like to read several books at a time.

I LOVE the Sookie Stackhouse -Tru blood series! :)

Well audiobooks can be tricky. If the narrator sucks, I usually have a hard time liking the book. So, I'm not totally into audios but they are nice to have.

All the time! Blogging is great fun but I find my self coveting so many books I don't have even as the list of books I do own but haven't got around to reading yet continues to grow! Quite a few of those books you have in the list are also on my various piles but there's only so much time in the day I can give over to reading!

Yes, I definitely know the feeling.

I would recommend the Mercedes Thompson series, it's amazing. :)

All the time! :)
I'm eager to finish a book (especially if it's series) so I can start on the next and enjoy some more of the action. I'm at the moment engrossed in the Vorkosigan Saga and I'm going rather fast through them – I love those books (this is my second time reading them).
From your list, I'd recommend finishing Anita Blake and definitely starting on Sookie Stackhouse. :)
I also love Keri Arthur and I. Andrews.

Birgit – I know what you mean. I've read a few books that are really dire but as I hate to not finish books I keep reading even though there are new shinies on my shelf ;)

Jules – No, it's not the worst problem to have lol

Anna – Laura likes audiobooks, she listens to a couple a month. Yes, I can imagine if the narrator is rubbish then it can be off putting.

Mel – Yep, there's only so much time in a day I can devote to reading. I do always find it amazing when peeps say they read a book a day!

Mervi – I've heard good things about MT :)

Ines – I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!

Vivienne – LOL

Yes! My TBR pile keeps growing instead of getting any smaller, so I rush through some books because I feel I'm not reading enough. I hope to have a clear TBR pile one day, but I doubt it.

I am *entirely* like that. There's always something I'm dying to read and I find myself reading so I can get to it, because I hate dropping a book. I forget what's been happening, I don't pick it back up, easier to just read it. I'm so slow though, and I'm reading a lot of big, chunky fantasy! So it takes me a couple of weeks to get through a book usually. /pine.

All I can say is that yes, I want to do this ALL THE TIME! I, like you, have loads and loads of (mostly YA, some adult UF) series I want to either start or finish, but I think part of the fun is knowing I've got so much good stuff to read.

I've purposely saved the next 2 books in Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series because I know they're going to be amazing. :D

Like I said, we need more eyes, hands and time. ;)

Heh, I want to do this all the time. Sometimes I make myself be diligent and finish the book that I'm currently reading, and other times I just say to hell with it and put it down in favour of the book I want to read next. Or else read them both, designating them as maybe "the book I read on my breaks at work" and "the book I read at home before bed." But I have such a terrible habit of doing this, and I'm trying to get out of it.

I know what you mean! I must say that you need to start the Black Dagger Brotherhood series..I will put down whatever I am reading to read them…:D

Right now I have quite a few books that aren't review books and they are just sitting there teasing me….LOL

I have a list but the ones I am "reminded" of the most often are Kim Harrison and Laurell K Hamilton. There are tons more but yep I get a bit overwhelmed with what I want to read vs how much time I actually have.

I totally thought it was just me! My plan this month was to catch up on series I have started, maybe finish a couple. But I have found so many books at the library that I want to read to first! Now that it is getting nice out and I can start gardening, I have even less time for reading…so I think I just need to start reading faster. lol

Reply

MoonStar May 10, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Oh yes. I know this feeling all to well.
Thankfully I have started to read faster this year. So it`s helping. Though I keep buying new books, even though I have like 30 books on my high to Read list. :S I have no clue how I am going to get through them all..
Actually talked to a collegue about it the other day. He was like. With all the books you got. You should stop working a year and just read xD But that`s not possible :( A girls gotta work so she can get some food on the table. :(

I do this all the time. I'm reading multiple books at the same time and I'm trying to break out of this problem because I really want to finish a book thoroughly and fully to get the whole feeling of it. But there's just so much I have to read and so many new releases and authors!

That's kind of why my nose is stuck in a book pretty much during any break time I get when I'm at school. Cause usually when I have school it takes me 1 week to finish, hopefully when summer (for our school) starts I'll be able to read more and catch up with all the new books.

It's gets kind of tiring, but I still love reading like a maniac.

I'm a FAST reader, often reading more than one book at a time, and I still find myself doing that at times. I have a HUGE to-be-read shelf and at times it seems as if I will never get through all of them.

I love stand alone most so I am like that more with those.

The series that did this to me was Dan Walls which I got the recommendation from you. I have read both I am not a serial killer and Mr. Monster already this year, ready for the new one. :-)

I read slow like you also, sometimes I just wish there was another hour or 2 in the day just for reading.

Yes espically when I have a lot of review books. The books I buy are always put on the backburner as I feel like I should get review books read fitst.

I feel exactly the same. There are soo many books i want to read, I think I have about 300 on my wishlist at the moment. And I also have series that I have enjoyed but have fallen behind on the Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn springs to mind. I wish is could read faster and devour them al! :-)

I'm the same way. Only it takes me about a month to read a book. Sometimes longer and sometimes I can read a book in just a few days. It depends on the book.

I'm currently reading the 4th book in the Outlander series, Drums of Autumn, a series I love. But I was just given The Help for Mother's Day and I can't wait to read it. The Outlander books are quite long though and I have about 300-400 pages left in Drums of Autumn.

I rarely had this happen before I started blogging, but since the advent of my book review blog, I am experiencing it more and more. I need to back off a bit, I think, so the enjoyment and love of books, doesn't take a back burner to the need to review.

I can completely identify with your problem. I too have so many series I want to read and to catch up on that I find myself reading more than one book at a time and trying hard not to rush through them too quickly so that I can move on to the next one.
Happy reading!

Oh you are so not alone in this one. I'm totally like this all the time! I have a list like you of series I want to start asap and then I have the ones that I would like to get to one day.

I'm not a fast reader either, but I read a lot. When I'm bogged down with other life-ish things *ahem* work *ahem* then I tend to read slower, which is frustrating. lol Part of me wants to try to learn to read faster, but part of me is just happy that I enjoy reading either way. *shrugs*

But yeah, at least we don't have to worry about running out of books to read! lol

I know exactly what you mean. A few months ago I went through all my books and pulled out the ones that are part of a series that I started but never finished, and I put all those books on one shelf together. I have 19 series in progress! Now that they're all on one shelf, in the middle of my living room, I find my eyes constantly drawn to the shelf, scanning the titles, eagerly wanting to get to each and every one immediately. Putting them together was a good strategy, I have started getting caught up, but then I have like a thousand other books I want to read also. There just isn't enough time in the day for all the reading I want to do!
