I keep saying one of these days I’ll have an office. Once upon a time, I had one. That was, ironically enough, before I got published. Then, we moved and a surprise addition to our family took up the room I thought would be my office. We have a small house. But when we moved here, it was perfect for me, my husband, and my daughter. Plenty of room, I thought. And the house is adorable—one of those low-country southern style cottages with the front porch that runs the entire length of the house. Then the second baby came, and we got a Great Dane. And, boy, are we cramped!
So nowadays I make do with my small corner of the living room. As you can see, I have my recliner, which is very comfy, my gorgeous lamp (love!), and then all my work stuff and books piled next to me. And my dog, Yeager, always lays by my chair – usually under the foot rest, which makes getting up and down an event.
I usually sit down about 9 a.m. with my coffee, check email, respond to any pressing stuff and then write until lunch. After lunch, I continue on until 2 p.m. (if I’m productive), if not, I’ll keep going until 3 or 4 p.m. If I’m really behind and deadlines are looming, I’ll write at night in the bed with my laptop, which you can see sitting on my chair.
Upon closer inspection, you’ll see my fabulous black war horse sculpture – my hub bought me that to celebrate THE BETTER PART OF DARKNESS releasing. The stack of books next to him are the Polish editions of my first YA, DARKNESS BECOMES HER, next to that are some of the galley pages for Charlie #3, THE HOUR OF DUST & ASHES and a cover flat next to the photo of my kids. The big stack is the galley pages for my second YA, A BEAUTIFUL EVIL.
I tend to stack things, all over this bookshelf and next to my chair.
I also made a space in our garage to house supplies, files, etc. Here is one corner where I keep boxes of swag, contracts, and extra copies of books. On the wall are my two signed copies of Chris McGrath artwork. I hope to get him to sign each of my covers and one day envision, them lining the walls of a real office.
I also put our old couch in the garage. This couch (which I am sitting on right now) is in desperate need of reupholstering, but I could never get rid of it. I wrote six novels sitting on this couch. So now when my living room spot isn’t working, I go into the garage and sit on my beloved old couch to write.
And this is what my old kitchen table in the garage looks like when I do my mailings.
So this is where my stories are made—living room and garage. But the good news is that we’re thinking of moving, so maybe that ‘real’ office is somewhere out there just waiting for me!
Thanks for checking out my space and as always happy reading!
~ Kelly

Oh how I love seeing peoples creative spaces. I just love that you have kept that old sofa and I hope it goes with you to your new home.
As someone with a recliner, two inquisitive Jack Russells and a 3 year old who likes making forts wherever there is an interesting 'cave'… I hear ya on that one

What a fun tour around – I was a little confused at first and wondering how she got a picture of my dinning room table
These books look great and I thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

"Where Stories Are Made" is such a cool idea!
I love that she keeps her old couch in the garage. Kelly seems like such a nice, down to earth person. It's great to see good people succeed.
