CAROLYN’S WISHLIST

Although this book looks like it could be from the ‘women’s contemporary fiction’ isle, this is actually an urban fantasy with ghosts and demons. I’ve already read ‘First Grave on the Right‘ (review coming next week) and it was fab. Can’t wait for book 2!

Second Grace on the Left (Charley Davidson #2)
Darynda Jones (Piatkus/St Martin’s Press)
Publication Date: Jan 2012
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Goodreads

Summary:

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper Extraordinaire, is back in this sexy, suspenseful novel of supernatural shenanigans.

When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?  (Goodreads)
This sounds as though it could be fun! The cover is awesome…

Hell Train
Christopher Fowler (Solaris)

Publication Date: Dec 2011
Genre: Horror

Goodreads

Summary:

Four passengers meet on a train journey through Eastern Europe during the First World War, and face a mystery that must be solved if they are to survive. As the ‘Arkangel’ races through the war-torn countryside, they must find out:

What is in the casket that everyone is so afraid of?

What is the tragic secret of the veiled Red Countess who travels with them?

Why is their fellow passenger the army brigadier so feared by his own men?

And what exactly is the devilish secret of the Arkangel itself?

Bizarre creatures, satanic rites, terrified passengers and the romance of travelling by train, all in a classically styled horror novel. (Goodreads)
LAURA’S WISHLIST

This has to be a horror classic and while I’ve seen the Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt film (yum!), I’ve never read the book. This feels like something I should rectify!

Interview With The Vampire (Vampire Chronicles #1)
Anne Rice (Ballantine)
Publication Date: 2004 (first published 1976)
Genre: Horror
Goodreads

Summary:

In the now-classic novel Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice refreshed the archetypal vampire myth for a late-20th-century audience. The story is ostensibly a simple one: having suffered a tremendous personal loss, an 18th-century Louisiana plantation owner named Louis Pointe du Lac descends into an alcoholic stupor. At his emotional nadir, he is confronted by Lestat, a charismatic and powerful vampire who chooses Louis to be his fledgling. The two prey on innocents, give their “dark gift” to a young girl, and seek out others of their kind (notably the ancient vampire Armand) in Paris.

But a summary of this story bypasses the central attractions of the novel. First and foremost, the method Rice chose to tell her tale–with Louis’ first-person confession to a skeptical boy–transformed the vampire from a hideous predator into a highly sympathetic, seductive, and all-too-human figure. Second, by entering the experience of an immortal character, one raised with a deep Catholic faith, Rice was able to explore profound philosophical concerns–the nature of evil, the reality of death, and the limits of human perception–in ways not possible from the perspective of a more finite narrator. (Goodreads)
There aren’t that many British urban fantasy authors and while Caitlin Kittredge isn’t British I’m intrigued about an urban fantasy book set in London.

Street Magic (Black London #1)
Caitlin Kittredge (St. Martin’s)
Publication Date: June 2009
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Goodreads

Summary:

Her name is Pete Caldecott. She was just sixteen when she met Jack Winter, a gorgeous, larger-than-life mage who thrilled her with his witchcraft. Then a spirit Jack summoned killed him before Pete’s eyes—or so she thought. Now a detective[MSOffice2] , Pete is investigating the case of a young girl kidnapped from the streets of London. A tipster’s chilling prediction has led police directly to the child… but when Pete meets the informant, she’s shocked to learn he is none other than Jack.

Strung out on heroin, Jack a shadow of his former self. But he’s able to tell Pete exactly where Bridget’s kidnappers are hiding: in the supernatural shadow-world of the fey. Even though she’s spent years disavowing the supernatural, Pete follows Jack into the invisible fey underworld, where she hopes to discover the truth about what happened to Bridget—and what happened to Jack on that dark day so long ago… (Goodreads)

Wow. The Darynda Jones cover is different than the US one. Oh and you so need to read Anne Rice.

Interview is a really good book. It reads a bit old-fashionedly, but it's a classic you can't ignore.

The summary you have up for Street Magic is wrong. I'm not sure what book the blurb is for, but it's definitely not this one. I really like Street Magic. It's a dark and gritty urban fantasy that gets better with each book in the series.

Interview w/Vampire is a goodie for sure but I've never understood why it is lumped in w/horror since it is more of a historical novel with a bit of that happens to be about vampires. Hope you get it soon and like it well enough to read the whole series– the books just get better and better.

Thanks for hosting. It is my blogs first time to join and I'm linking up my new co-blogger's wishlist this week.
