Zombie Survival

No shotgun? No chainsaw? No problem. Surviving the zombie apocalypse isn’t all about having the right weaponry. While blades and boom sticks will help in a sticky undead situation, there are plenty of ways to increase your odds of survival without going broke stocking up the armory. Here are a few cheap, quick ways to pump up your preparedness.

  1. Traps are a cheap, effective way to zombie-proof your property. Zombies aren’t the smartest kids on the block – just dig a few holes, cover with flimsy tarps and leaves, and you’re ready to go. For extra safety, throw a few broken bottles in the holes. Couldn’t hurt, right?
  2. Have a plan for when the electricity goes out. Dysentery and hypothermia kill, too. Don’t underestimate the importance of a generator or a way to boil your water and heat your food. And really, who wants to eat cold beans? That’s adding insult to apocalyptic injury.
  3. Keep your friends close and your enemies outside a locked door. Do you want some enterprising jerk to steal all your rations in the middle of the night? They were charming, I know, and had cute dimples, but we all need to eat. Make sure you’re hunkered down with trustworthy folks.
  4. Never leave home – or your safe house – without cards. Boredom can make sane people do crazy things. Bring a deck of cards, a handful of dice or that beat-up box of Candyland. It might not seem critical when the undead are nipping at your heels, but you’ll thank me later.
  5. Have fun. Nobody wants to sit in a basement eating canned rations with a grump. So your next door neighbor is missing their jaw or ate your cat? Maybe you saw the twins across the street tear into an old man like he was a walking chili cheese dog. It happens. Trust me, if you’re sulking too much you’ll be the first one volunteered to make that dangerous run down the block for more food. Things could be better sure, but they could also be worse – you could be one of the walking dead.

Birgit November 18, 2011 at 7:29 am

I'd surround myself with slower and fatter folks than myself. This way I'd be the fastest to escape and the zombies feasting on the others would certainly buy me extra time. 😉

FICTION STATE OF MIND November 18, 2011 at 7:44 am

location, location, location! Id try to find a 7-11 and lock myself in!

Rochelle Muller November 18, 2011 at 8:34 am

Try to get to a small Island with as little people as possible. I don't think Zombies can Swim. + take some supplies, etc canned food & seeds (in order to grow vegetables for long term food), etc.

Patsy November 18, 2011 at 8:40 am

I would make certain I had a concrete and steel Panic Room with a steel door two feet from me at all times!

Chippy November 18, 2011 at 8:48 am

If I had access to guns I would make sure I had a back up weapon that didn't require bullets like a machete.
No good having guns if you are then going to stand around looking confused when it runs out of ammo.

Other than that I haven't really thought about it!

Mel November 18, 2011 at 8:49 am

I would make sure I had access to running water in some form – a stream or river preferably in the the grounds of a big house surrounded by huge walls – the need to be clean would be essential after all that zombie bashing! :-)

KimvA November 18, 2011 at 8:54 am

Definitely do not want to be alone really do not want those zombies coming after my ass (better give them more options) so I would go and make sure there are some more people around. And I would definitely go and find some guns and ammo or something of that kind.

Stella (Ex Libris) November 18, 2011 at 9:34 am

Hm, I would be so panicked if there were to be a zombie apocalypse! I think I'd fly away to some remote and paradise-like island with my family where the sun is shining, it is warm and there are enough coconuts 😀

Louise November 18, 2011 at 9:49 am

I'd love to win!! I'm only just geting into zombie books… love them! 😉

Holz November 18, 2011 at 11:30 am

Hmm i think my first reaction would be to flee but then i'd be easy pickings if i was to be surrounded (i like to think im smarter than that but you can never be too sure:)
So i'd probrably stick with a group of people and push them in the way of any zombies…it is survival of the fittest you know;)

marybelle November 18, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I doubt that I would survive. I can see myself being over-run & over-come.

Ana C. Nunes November 18, 2011 at 2:03 pm

After reading the review here on BCC, I'm really looking forward to reading theses books. Also, after the author's tips on how to survive, I get the feeling I'll love the books.

Holly November 18, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Never thought about bringing cards or having board games, but I see how important it could be. Great post and thanks for the chance to win!

Jenny Buijs November 18, 2011 at 3:20 pm

I'd probably find someone really smart and strong (preferably a guy;) ) who could protect me. Or I would just lock myself in a basement somewhere with food and water and stay there untill it's over 😛

Thanks for doing this giveaway!

Bookish Brunette November 18, 2011 at 3:30 pm

I'm not entering… Because I live in the US- but thanks the AWESOME ladies at BCC I have a copy of this one! I can't wait to start!!

Angie November 18, 2011 at 3:39 pm

As soon as the news hit I would descend into my zombie bunker equipped with loads of food, including renewable sources like plants, lots of good books, and my husband and ccats to wait it out.

thekams November 18, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Personally, I don't think I would survive a zombie apocalypse! But, I would try – and I think I would do that by hunkering down in my house with plenty of food and pointy weapons, only venturing out when I absolutely needed to.

Saadia November 18, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Make sure I know my enemy by reading A Completely Scientific Guide to the Lives of the Undead, get hold of some weapons and aim for the heid!

Sam Bella November 18, 2011 at 4:59 pm

I's probably be really bad at surviving a zombie apocalypse! My aim would be to stick with people who actually know what they are doing and try to secure as much food and weapons as possible and hide somewhere underground.

Pauline B Jones November 18, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I don't actually think I would survive. My best hope is that the zombies don't want an old, tough lady, though the fact that I'm slow might tip the zombie toward an old brain….

Rain Maiden November 18, 2011 at 5:36 pm

When a zombie infestation hits, I hope to have a flaming sword to take care of business. Thanks for the giveaway, I live in the US.

Julie W November 18, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I would make sure I had a really big machete, and a really big guy to help me out! I would also look for someone who can cook, because if there's no fast food places open, I could be in trouble:)

BlackWolf November 18, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Water bottles, canned food, chocolate for energy, a boat, fishing pole ,weapons.. and get to a small Island..wait about 2 to 3 years until the bodies of the zombies have decomposed completely .. and then kill the rest

erin November 18, 2011 at 6:11 pm

Thanks for such a fun post!! I love all things Zombie and apocalypse, and I've had this book on my wishlist!

I'd have to say that I'd follow Madeleine's advice but make sure that I have a lot of survial stuff: a secure, high locations with multiple exits; lots of ammo including bows and arrows, clubs; non perishable rations; walky talkies; binoculars; water; all my books :) (I'd be entertained forever); first aid kits; seeds/planting stuff; and appropriate clothing.

I'm more of a pack it all in and hunker down sort. Wait it out if I can. I'd only really have my friends and family in. Not to be selfish but you can only realistically support a few better than a large crowd.

Hopefully, never have to really worry about this 😉

gemma harding November 18, 2011 at 6:37 pm

I'd take a leaf out of shaun of the dead and barricade myself in the pub. Hey it worked for shaun!!!

Blodeuedd November 18, 2011 at 6:41 pm

An island would always be good, can those sucker swim..or float? So I would go the this island around here, blow up the only bridge, go to the tallest house and bunker down with food, keep a few chickens inside, build a house around an old well. Get all the guns I can find

boeklover November 18, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I haven't read your books, but it seems so nice! I think I really need to start.

Aleksandra November 18, 2011 at 7:40 pm

LOL, no idea, maybe I'll go somewhere isolated where there weren't lots of people before the apocalypse, so there won't be lots of zombies 😉

Thanks for the giveaway!

Claudia November 18, 2011 at 8:35 pm

Oh dear … I would hole up in my secret underground laboratory and prey on unsuspecting survivors, stealing their supplies with my cunning skills and daring, while they are looking out for slower less brainy intruders.

buddyt November 18, 2011 at 9:42 pm

Well if I start training now I will probably be qualified as an astronaut by the time the Zombie Apocalypse starts.

By then there will be bases on the moon and on mars as well as a space station, so I will just cut short my five yearly Earth leave and return to base where I will be quite safe !

Thanks for the giveaway and for opening it to worldwide entries, including us future off-worlders.

Melissa (Books and Things) November 18, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I would love to say, sure no probs. Come with me and I'll save everyone! But then reality creeps in and I have to admit that I would probably end up zombified within 10 minutes. 😛

Kat November 19, 2011 at 12:39 am

Wow, this is a great giveaway! I love zombie books, and this one sounds so interesting. :) Honestly, I don't know how I would survive a zombie apocalypse. I think I would just try to do the smart thing instead of being idiotic like they are in the movies. Maybe surround myself with slow runners, so they'd get eaten first haha!

Stephanie November 19, 2011 at 2:14 am

To be honest, I have no idea how I'd survive. I'd probably freeze and be one of the first to bite it. Literally.

Thanks for the giveaway as I've been wanting to read this book for quite a while. Wish me luck!!

shauna November 19, 2011 at 4:18 am

Hmmmm….surviving a zombie apocalypse…I would try to secure my house as best I could, maybe have lots of rotten meats and such to throw at them if they got too close and have tons of fire starters at my disposal…light their butts when they attacked….and pray!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

Nina @ Death Books and Tea November 19, 2011 at 9:46 am

If I had to survive a zombie apocalypse, I'd stock up, round up all my friends and family, and we'd sit it out. And steal as many matches and candles as possible.
Thanks for the giveaway!

SouthernLady23 November 19, 2011 at 4:27 pm

To survive a zombie apocalypse, I'd make sure to hole up in a Super Walmart Center – they have everything you need to survive! LOL It also helps that my hubby is in the military and knows how to survive in the worst conditions possible :)
Thanks for the giveaway!

Joanna Kiely November 19, 2011 at 10:42 pm

I would make sure I was somewhere familiar which is safe and secure. I would make sure my brother and several of our friends where with us and that we each took turns as lookout! We would be organised, deadly and the zombies wouldn't know what had hit them!!

Erica November 20, 2011 at 1:54 am

I would pretend that I were a zombie just like everyone else, I'd play along and try to find some food and safety, like a huge store or mall that has all the supplies I need. I'd get weapons, food, water and anything else I need.

Anna Friday November 20, 2011 at 5:33 am

Go hide on an island in the middle of nowhere with supplies.

Kulsuma November 20, 2011 at 12:54 pm

I would definitely live on an island… or somewhere with endless supplies.

Jenny Hildrum November 20, 2011 at 6:19 pm

I would find my vampire friends and just hang out.

Red Rose Mummy November 20, 2011 at 6:20 pm

A well supplied bunker would be needed I think.

Tanya November 20, 2011 at 7:07 pm

Stock up on all the essential non perishables, guns and ammo, generator, fuel, all weather clothing, first aid items, then find a safe secure location and hunker in for battle.

Sherri November 20, 2011 at 7:10 pm

You can never be over prepared for the zombie apocalypse… :o)

kara-karina@Nocturnal Book Reviews November 20, 2011 at 9:32 pm

I actually thought it through believe it or not.:) I'll find a big yacht with all the conveniences and stay in the ocean going from a place to place to get the supplies. That way most of the time I don't need to worry about zombie attacks and I have a quick getaway. Of course I will need plenty of ammunition to fight possible pirates and a zombie survival kit aka a shotgun and machete while getting the supplies. There are few additions, but that will make this comment too long :)
Thanks for this giveaway!
I'm in UK

Chrystal November 21, 2011 at 12:53 am

I've been fascinated with zombies a lot lately and have been thinking about how I would survive if a zombie apocalypse happened… I just know I'd need "quiet" weapons like a bow and LOTS of arrows, to be stealthy when trying to make it to different locations for supplies and to make sure I have people around me that I know have my back at all costs.

AlexSarahLouise November 21, 2011 at 9:25 pm

i would hide somewhere under ground or high up so the wouldnt get to me ! xx

Jennifer@The Book Nympho November 22, 2011 at 5:43 pm

I've been told my husband that zombies can't climb so I would build and awesome tree house surround the place with landmines and make friends with a sniper.

And once the zombies in the area was gone I would arm myself with lots and lots of bows and arrows for a quieter attack if any just happen by.

D. Sales November 22, 2011 at 6:00 pm

My experience from video games has taught me to snipe zombies from a far and for the stragglers, a quick shotgun blast to the face will do the trick. HAHA! Zombies are the best!!

Kah_cherub November 23, 2011 at 3:31 pm

You practice your running skills and how to shoot a moving target. LOL Oh, and how to svae food and water and use an axe or any sharp piece of wood/glass/metal.

So many books, so little time November 23, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Keep your group numbers low, always be aware of your surroundings, dont trust strangers

Paige November 23, 2011 at 9:25 pm

Hmm.. I'm not sure that i would survive a zombie apocolypse. I don't think i'd be the first to die but i certainly wouldn't be the last.

Hannah November 24, 2011 at 11:54 pm

How would I survive a zombie apocalypse? I doubt I would!! Ha. I'd obviously arm myself with something razor sharp, or at least heavy with pointy bits, to dash brains in, and go wearing my Etnies (comfy shooes). But I imagine I'd be caught and nommed pretty quick.

Lisa Richards/alterlisa November 26, 2011 at 3:12 am

In my younger days, I might have survived by my wits, now a days they would get me for sure.
