On My Wishtlist (#97)

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It’s where we list all the books we desperately want but haven’t actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It’s also an event that you can join in with too – Mr Linky is always at the ready for you to link your own ‘On My Wishlist’ post. If you want to know more click here.
CAROLYN’S WISHLIST

I love the sound of this book, just my kind of read! But I hate the cover – it doesn’t give you a hint of what the story is about, is just very dull and boring. My eyes would glaze over this in a bookshop without even stopping.

Zone One
Colson Whitehead (Knopf Doubleday)
Publication Date: Oct 2011
Genre: Horror, Zombies
Goodreads

Summary:

In this wry take on the post-apocalyptic horror novel, a pandemic has devastated the planet. The plague has sorted humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead.

Now the plague is receding, and Americans are busy rebuilding civilization under orders from the provisional government based in Buffalo. Their top mission: the resettlement of Manhattan. Armed forces have successfully reclaimed the island south of Canal Street—aka Zone One—but pockets of plague-ridden squatters remain. While the army has eliminated the most dangerous of the infected, teams of civilian volunteers are tasked with clearing out a more innocuous variety—the “malfunctioning” stragglers, who exist in a catatonic state, transfixed by their former lives.

Mark Spitz is a member of one of the civilian teams working in lower Manhattan. Alternating between flashbacks of Spitz’s desperate fight for survival during the worst of the outbreak and his present narrative, the novel unfolds over three surreal days, as it depicts the mundane mission of straggler removal, the rigors of Post-Apocalyptic Stress Disorder, and the impossible job of coming to grips with the fallen world.

And then things start to go wrong.

Both spine chilling and playfully cerebral, Zone One brilliantly subverts the genre’s conventions and deconstructs the zombie myth for the twenty-first century. (Goodreads)
As you know I don’t read a lot of chick-lit any more but I will always make an exception for Sophie Kinsella – I have loved everything she’s written and I can’t wait to get my hands on this fun looking upcoming book – isn’t the cover cute?!

I’ve Got Your Number
Sophie Kinsella (Bantam Press)
Publication Date: Feb 2012
Genre: Chick-Lit
Goodreads

Summary:

I’ve lost it. :( The only thing in the world I wasn’t supposed to lose. My engagement ring. It’s been in Magnus’s family for three generations. And now the very same day his parents are coming, I’ve lost it. The very same day! Do not hyperventilate, Poppy. Stay positive :) !!

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree. He wants his phone back and doesn’t appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other’s lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents . . . she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life. (Goodreads)

LAURA’S WISHLIST

As a bit of twitter addict myself, I think this romance from Medeiros written all via tweets looks really fun.
Goodnight Tweetheart
Teresa Medeiros (Gallery)
Publication Date: December 2010
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Goodreads

Summary:

Abigail Donovan has a lot of stuff she should be doing. Namely writing her next novel. A bestselling author who is still recovering from a near Pulitzer Prize win and the heady success that follows Oprah’s stamp of approval, she is stuck at Chapter Five and losing confidence daily. But when her publicist signs her up for a Twitter account, she’s intrigued. What’s all the fuss?

Taken under the wing of one of her Twitter followers, “MarkBaynard”—a quick witted, quick-typing professor on sabbatical—Abby finds it easy to put words out into the world 140 characters at a time. And once she gets a handle on tweets, retweets, direct messages, hashtags, and trends, she starts to feel unblocked in writing and in life. After all, why should she be spending hours in her apartment staring at her TweetDeck and fretting about her stalled career when Mark is out there traveling the world and living?

Or is he? (Goodreads)
This looks like a totally fab paranormal romance, loving the futuristic time travel element too. I never can resist a time travel romance!

Sleeping With The Wolf (After The Crash #1)
Maddy Barone (Create Space)
Publication Date: August 2011
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Goodreads

Even now, decades after the plague has dwindled to isolated outbreaks, women are precious commodities to be fought for, and Carla finds herself offered as the prize in a Bride Fight. Alpha wolf Taye knows Carla is his mate. Losing her is unacceptable. He wins the Bride Fight. But can he win her heart? (Goodreads)

I actually think Zone One has quite a different approach to the post-apocalypse world. I can't think of many other books that focus on the reclaiming of the world after it has fallen – I'm definitely intrigued! Although you're right that cover is very bland! :)
