Today’s guest on “Authors Top 10 Favourites“ is horror/urban fantasy author, Jennifer Harlow. Jennifer Harlow spent her restless childhood fighting with her three brothers and scaring the heck out of herself with horror movies and books. She grew up to earn a degree at the University of Virginia which she put to use as a radio DJ, crisis hotline volunteer, bookseller, lab assistant, wedding coordinator, and government investigator. Currently she calls Northern Virginia home but that restless itch is ever present. In her free time she continues to scare the beejepers out of herself watching scary movies and opening her credit card bills.

Top Ten Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen
by Jennifer Harlow
I like to think of myself as a horror movie connoisseur. I’ve seen them all, from the Universal classics to some godawful remakes which seem to be so popular right now. Most are crap, and not the fun crap like Octogator on The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. They’re just stupid or gross without being cheesy. In other words, like all Adam Sandler movies, they’re not very creative or innovative. They go for reused characters and situations without even a hint of suspense. There’s no intelligence or joy in them. So, since I believe in the good getting credit even though they may not be mainstream, here are my ten favorite horror movies I doubt you’ve ever seen. Most are barely considered cult favorites, and made little to no money to warrant a sequel or garner attention. More’s the shame. Here they are:
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
This one is a deconstruction of slasher movies. A film crew follows a slasher as he prepares to go on a killing spree. One of the smartest horror movies I’ve ever seen.
Okay, this is really just an eye-candy movies for the ladies. I mean, Michael Fassbender and Henry Cavill? It’s worth suffering through an okay horror movies for those two. Just saying.
This is one of the few horror movies that still freaks me out because it’s based on real events that were studied. Basically a ghost keeps sexually assaulting a woman and there’s nothing she can do about it. Creepy.
This was my favorite movie as a kid. A group of boys fight classic monsters. Sound familiar?
A meteor destroys most of humanity and turns others into zombies. Two valley girls must find a way to survive not only them but crazy military people. Like totally good.
A horror take on those 60s beach movies with a serial killer twist. Very funny and visually interesting.
Funny, ironic take on 80s horror movies with great pedigree. Written by James Gunn (awesome remake of Dawn of the Dead) and staring the awe inspiring Nathan Fillion.
Vincent Price gets rid of his critics via some great death scenes inspired by some of Shakespeare’s plays. Almost makes me like Shakespeare.
This one just came out this year. A very meta movie that asks the question: was Leatherface just a dude who liked chainsaws and some hippies invaded his house? Funny.
College students end up inside waxwork horror exhibits and have to survive vampires, zombies, serial killers, and even mummies. So needs a remake.
So those are my recommendations. Most can be found on streaming Netflix or regular Netflix. What about you? Which would you add to the list?
Happy viewing!
