BOOK REVIEW: 'Everyone Loves A Hero' by Marie Force
Title: Everyone Loves A Hero
Author: Marie Force
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca (US)
Publication Date: March 2011
ARC: 416 Pages
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Reviewed by: Laura

RATING: 9/10 - Excellent, this will remain on my bookshelf forever
GOODREADS SUMMARY:
Fame has its perks...
Reluctantly famous, First Officer Cole Langston finds being in the spotlight has its advantages-until he meets Olivia. Having women throw themselves at him everywhere he goes becomes a serious problem when he's trying to convince her she's the one...
And its price...
Olivia has trouble trusting a guy like Cole, and everywhere she turns she sees reasons to run. But he's the only man who's ever seemed to understand her as an artist and as a woman... Cole is working overtime to prove to Olivia that he's serious, but her deep seated mistrust and his entourage of unwelcomed fans may be more than they can overcome...
REVIEW:
What to say about this book other than I absolutely loved it?! Marie Force perfectly encapsulates the giddy intensity of an exciting new relationship and the whirlwind of falling head over heels in love, butterflies and all. Sucking you in and taking you on the journey with the characters.
I began this book one night when my husband was away, and I kept looking at the clock thinking I'll put it down and go to sleep in a minute. When I got to a hundred pages from the end, I knew there was no way I was going to sleep until it was finished. I devoured it cover to cover in just over four hours and it kept me reading up until the small hours.
Cole Langston is the perfect romance hero, a handsome pilot who become famous for landing a plane in a terrible blizzard after the Captain collapsed with a heart attack. Saving both the plane and the pilot, the press love him and he's become a poster boy for the airline he works for. His heroism has earned him fame and a reputation with the ladies.
One morning while in the queue to buy a pack of mentos, Cole comes to the rescue of shop worker Olivia and ends up being attacked in her defence.
There's a fragility about Olivia, with a troubled family life and a couple of poor relationships behind her, she lacks self confidence. But as soon as Cole and Olivia set eyes on each other... Lightening bolts. Let's face it, what girl wouldn't want a handsome, hero pilot falling in love with them and whisking them away to different places? Their love story is intense and consuming and will make you sigh with a soppy smile on your face.
Some readers might get irritated with how quickly Cole and Olivia say those three magical words I love you, but it didn't bother me in the slightest. It seemed right and perfectly mirrored the intensity of the relationship. Also I loved seeing womaniser Cole humbled by true love.
My one small frustration with the story was Olivia's insecurities, she can't quite completely trust Cole. While it must be hard when it seems like every woman around is throwing themselves at your man and secretly slipping him telephone numbers, at the same time you either trust the man you love or you don't. But of course, every romance needs that will they, won't they dramatic element to add in that extra sizzle.
VERDICT:
A fantastic and absorbing romance, with a hero and heroine that you can't help but fall for. And like a delicious piece of chocolate cake, as soon as i'm finished it I wanted to start it all over again.
I have now added every single one of Marie Force's books to my wishlist and shall be promptly buying them all! I think they will make perfect holiday reading.

From Page to Screen: 'Howl's Moving Castle' by Diana Wynne Jones & Movie Directed by Hayao Miyazaki

'From Page to Screen' is a brand new feature which has been in the pipeline for quite a while. BCC's guest reviewer, Jo, will be reading a book followed by watching a movie adaptation and then writing a review about both. This feature will be posted once a month.
This month's page to screen is 'Howl's Moving Castle' by Diana Wynne Jones and the movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Guest Review by Jo
Howl is one of the most delightfully charming, yet arrogant and selfish characters I have read. These traits may not sound too appealing, but in this gorgeous fantasy they make for one fantastic character.
Howl's Moving Castle - The Book
Set in the land of Ingary, Sophie lives and works in a hat shop and is resigned to her fate. As the eldest sister, it’s commonly known in Ingary that she will fail and have a pretty miserable life. After an encounter with the Witch of the Waste, Sophie is cursed and changed into an old woman and knowing she cannot remain at home in her new appearance she seeks out the shelter of the Castle that moves along Ingary’s hillside and the infamous wizard Howl.
I’ve mentioned that Howl is a favourite character of mine, but Sophie deserves a round of applause too. She’s a tough, ‘take no prisoners’ kind of gal – my favourite! Sophie may be old in appearance after being cursed, but she retains her courage and fire and doesn’t let her curse diminish her personality.
Howl really is a puzzle. At the start we hear of his legend, that he leads young girls astray and devours them. But when we first meet him, this is far from what we see or think! He’s a very vain, self-obsessed thing, but so clever and witty that you forget the arrogance and see the charm. He’s really interesting, and he’s interactions with Sophie and the Witch are really such fun to read.
'Howls’ Moving Castle' is full of magic, mystery and mayhem and the plot is rather batty, but it’s what makes it such an amazing book! The character stand prominent too, it would have been easy for them to get lost in such an intricate and fast paced story and this is due to Diana Wynne Jones. Her writing is just as charismatic and wonderful as Howl. Pure Magic.
Howl's Moving Castle - The Movie

Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki is in charge for our movie adaptaion and he has done a really great job. It’s very dream-like, which fits the feel of the book. Miyazaki does take liberties with the story, and with characters so in the end it did feel like it was his own story, with a nod to the novel. This isn’t a bad thing, not at all, I enjoyed the movie greatly and Howl and Sophie’s romance is wonderfully done, understated in a way that Miyazaki is known for. He doesn’t have to spell things out for us, he lets us just enjoy the story. What we get with the movie is Miyazaki’s version of the story, which is a work of art itself.
Summary
For me, the book reigns supreme. I appreciate, and very much enjoyed the movie. It’s always interesting to see someone’s interpretation of a popular book and the movie didn’t disappoint – it’s full of fantastic animation and that alone is a joy to behold. The book has such an atmosphere and magic all of its own that it would be impossible for anyone to get everything on celluloid, and I think if everything was in the movie it would be confusing! In the book, it just fits perfectly.

As you know I love zombies and this one sounds like it could be awesome!
My Life As A White Trash Zombie (White Trash Zombie #1)
Diana Rowland (DAW)
Publication Date: July 2011
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Goodreads Summary:
Angel Crawford is a loser
Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she's a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who's been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.
That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in an horrible car crash, but she doesn't have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there's a job waiting for her at the parish morgue--and that it's an offer she doesn't dare refuse.
Before she knows it she's dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey--just when she's hungriest!
Angel's going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn't, she's dead meat.
Literally.

This sounds really good and I like the cover too.
Quiver
Holly Luhning (HarperCollins)
Publication Date: Jan 2011
Genre: Psychological Thriller, Horror

Goodreads Summary:
In sixteenth-century Hungary, Countess Elizabeth Báthory tortured and killed over six hundred servant girls in order to bathe in their blood; she believed this brutal ritual would preserve her youth and beauty
Danica, a young forensic psychologist, is drawn to Báthory’s legend. She has moved from Canada to England to work at Stowmoor, a Victorian insane asylum turned modern-day forensic hospital. One of her patients, the notorious Martin Foster, murdered a fourteen-year-old girl in homage to Báthory. He cultivates his criminal celebrity and Danica struggles to maintain a professional demeanor with the charismatic Foster as she begins to suspect that his activities may be linked to a cabal that idolizes Báthory.
Danica’s life in London becomes increasingly complicated when Maria, a glamorous friend from Danica’s past, arrives to do archival work in the city. She claims to have discovered Báthory’s long-lost diaries and slowly reveals horrific passages to Danica. As Danica’s career and her relationship with her artist-boyfriend, Henry, begin to break down, Maria lures her into a complex social sphere. Unsure of who to trust, Danica’s professional and personal lives become dangerously entwined, and she must decide what she is willing to risk to satisfy her attraction to Báthory’s ominous legend.

I haven't read this author before - this is a new series and it sounds pretty good.
Living on the Edge (Edge #1)
Shannon K. Butcher (Signet)
Publication Date: March 2011
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Goodreads Summary:
With her thrilling Sentinel Wars series, Shannon K. Butcher pushed readers to the very edge of their imaginations. Now, with the first in her new action romance series she takes them to the very edge of their seats, following the loves and lethal lives of a group of hardened mercenaries who live on the edge-and beyond...
After a devastating injury, Lucas Ramsay knows he's finished as a soldier. But when the general who saved his life asks him for a favor, he says yes. All Lucas has to do is keep the general's daughter from getting on a plane to Colombia -- which is easier said than done...
Independent to the core, Sloane Gideon is a member of the Edge-a group of mercenaries for hire. But she's not on the clock for this mission. Her best friend is being held by a vicious drug lord, and Sloane must rescue her -- no matter how many handsome ex-soldiers her father sends to dissuade her.
With little choice, Lucas tracks Sloane to Colombia-where she reluctantly allows him to aid her in her search. But as they grow closer to the target, they grow closer to each other. And before the battle is over, both will have to decide just what they are willing to fight for.

This sounds just up my street!
Aftertime
Sophie Littlefield (Luna)
Publication Date: Feb 2011
Genre: Apocalyptic Horror, Zombies

Goodreads Summary:
Someone once said that all apocalypses are experienced locally. In the case of Cass Dollar, the nightmare occurred with the violent abduction of two-year-old Ruthie, which she vividly remembers. Only later is young Cass assaulted also by the vague, twisting memories of a much wider conflagration that she herself only narrowly survived. A government experiment had turned the entire California landscape into the hunting grounds of zombie Beaters, but Cass can only think of the helpless toddler she is missing. A deeply arresting paperback original. Editor's recommendation.

So that's what's on my wishlist this week - what's on yours?

RATING: 8/10 - Brilliant, couldn't put it down
GOODREADS SUMMARY:
When Carlos Fuentes returns to America after living in Mexico for a year, he doesn’t want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him at a high school in Colorado . Carlos likes living his life on the edge and wants to carve his own path—just like Alex did. Then he meets Kiara Westford. She doesn’t talk much and is completely intimidated by Carlos’ wild ways. As they get to know one another, Carlos assumes Kiara thinks she’s too good for him, and refuses to admit that she might be getting to him. But he soon realises that being himself is exactly what Kiara needs right now.
REVIEW:
If you loved the first book in this series 'Perfect Chemistry' then without a doubt you're going to fall for this one too. The plot itself is pretty similar, bad boy falls for good girl. But this time with no star-crossed lovers quality.
Like his brother before him, Carlos is descending into the dark world of drugs, violence and gang crime. With an attitude the size of a small planet, he can't see what's wrong with his lifestyle. He's putting food on the table and preventing his mother from working like a slave. When his brother and Mum insist he moves to Colorado, enrol back in school and make a fresh start for himself, he's of course immediately resistant and inevitably falls straight in with the wrong crowd.
Kiara, is a good girl. I liked her more than I liked Brittany from 'Perfect Chemistry', she is a less conventional heroine. Her love for over sized t-shirts, shorts and hiking boots, the fact she doesn't even own a pair of high heels and her favourite past time is renovating old cars. She also has a stutter. All of this adds a touch of difference to her character.
I read this book pretty quickly, in about two days. It's a fun and engaging read. The romance between Kiara and Carlos develops at a nice pace. I liked the fact that beneath the tough, cocky exterior Carlos has a soft, vulnerable centre. Which allowed for some lovely tender moments.
This book is also surprisingly funny too. I shall just say look out for the gay Frisbee scene. :)
An issue I did have was that the ending does get wrapped up pretty quickly. There was more focus on the relationship between Carlos and Kiara and because of this things are tied up a little too easily for my liking. It felt like, ok they're in love now, now we need to find away to resolve this problem (not wanting to give too much away), which of course had been a huge part of the storyline.
It is interesting seeing Alex and Brittany again, two years on. While I know this was Carlos and Kiara's story, I would have liked to have seen a bit more of them. But I did certainly like seeing a wiser, more mature Alex.
I'm usually a fan of epilogues. I sometimes think if I could live in a Disney movie I'd be in heaven, I adore happy endings! But unfortunately Simone Elkeles can't seem to get the tone of hers right. The epilogue went beyond cheesy, and I hate to sound mean, but to pretty ghastly. My advice.... skip it.
VERDICT:
Despite the too easy wrap up I had fun with this book. Made up of great characters and with a romance that is very easy to get swept up in. Carlos is as dark, wild and handsome as his brother.
Also, what a fab cover!
