Cover Crush - US Edition: 'Silver-Tongued Devil' by Jaye Wells

'Cover Crush' is a regular feature here at BCC. I love covers - they're the first thing that catches my eye and will be the primary reason I pick up a book. This feature is where I highlight gorgeous covers of books I've seen either around the blogosphere or at the bookshop. These posts run sporadically, as soon as I see a cover I love, I post it!
I have loved every cover for Jaye Well's 'Sabina Kane' series and this one is no different - I love it - Sabina looks so edgy! I just can't wait to get my hands on this book, it sounds awesome - Jan 2012 is just too far away... So what do you think of the latest cover for Sabina?

Summary
Life is looking up for Sabina Kane. Now that her scheming grandmother is dead, the threat of war has passed and the rulers of the dark races are about to sign a treaty to ensure ongoing peace. Her relationship with sexy mage Adam Lazarus is strong and all her friends are around her. Even her magic training is progressing further than she ever expected. The only two dark spots in her otherwise settled life are her guilt over her sister Maisie's fragile mental state and Sabina's own sinking sense that she's got unfinished business with Cain, the mysterious cult leader she let get away months earlier.

When a string of murders rock the New York dark races community and threatens to stall the peace negotiations, Sabina finds herself helping to find the killer. Her investigation leads her down troubling paths that have her questioning everything - and everyone - she knows. And the closer she gets to the murderer, the more Sabina realises this is one foe she may not able to kill.

Laura's First Year at Book Chick City! (plus international giveaway!)

My First Year at Book Chick City

Wow! I can't believe it's been a year already. What started out as an innocent message to Carolyn on Twitter after I saw she was looking for extra reviewers to cover her holiday, of which I'm honest I didn't expect anything to come of it, has turned out to be something much bigger and the start of a fantastic friendship. And I've loved it! Who would of thought there were so many people in the world who like books as much as me?!

In that year I've reviewed over sixty books, some I loved, some not so much. But being part of BCC has really made me step outside and stretch my reading comfort zone. I'm reading different books, some I probably would not have picked up myself, particularly in the YA range, which I only ever read occasionally before.

Here are my top fives...

Top Five Books Reviewed:
The Painted Man - Peter V. Brett (Audiobook Sunday feature)
Alpha - Rachel Vincent
Shadowfever - Karen Marie Moning
My Name Is Memory - Ann Brashares
Everyone Loves A Hero - Marie Force

Bottom Five Books Reviewed:
Carnal Lust - Ashley Ludd
Original Sin - Allison Brennan
The Stone Prince - Gena Showalter
McKettricks of Texas: Austin - Linda Lael Miller
Always A Bridesmaid - Elaine Hopper

My first month on BCC started with me telling you a little bit about myself, trying to work out where to start on my favourite books when I kicked off the new 'Books We Love' feature, and then frantically cleaning and tidying my bookshelves so I could photograph them for my contribution to 'The Blogger's Bookshelf'. I know technically that's probably cheating, but my vanity so wouldn't let me share them with you before the cleaning session. Trust me, they seem to attract all sorts of rubbish from letters, to hairbrushes, at the moment a tape measure and new carpet samples are just a small sample of the tat on them.

In June 2010, having purchased my first ereader earlier in the year and getting really frustrated with the problems with pricing and availability of ebooks in the UK, Carolyn let me share a bit of a rant with you all in 'A Few Notes On The Ebook Industry'. Which attracted lots of interesting debate and comments.

Over the past year I've also discovered a new love for audiobooks, after emailing Carolyn a few times asking if she would like different audio reviews, the lovely lady she is, finally relented and gave me my very own feature! Audiobook Sunday can be read once a month on a Sunday.

One of my absolute favourite features I had great fun doing was interviewing Carolyn as part of Book Bloggers Appreciation Week. During which I began to wonder if she was my secret doppelgänger. It's amazing how many similarities we have, including both being classically trained singers and we also debated just how many calories we could devour in our last meal on earth.

As part of the same week, it was also a fab opportunity for me to share my love of Anne Bishop's 'The Black Jewels Trilogy' in BBAW's Forgotten Treasure which so nearly made it onto my 'Books We Love' but I took it off thinking more than three books was just greedy. Amazing fantasy books if you haven't read them.

Outside of blogging, Carolyn and I have genuinely become good friends. We met face to face for the very first time in February of this year at Bluewater shopping centre. I have to admit I was very nervous at first, worried we weren't going to get along in real life, but I needn't have worried. We went for a lovely lunch in the Cadburys' Cafe (nom, nom) and barely stopped talking for four hours straight! With Jo joining BCC last January we're hoping that all three of us can meet soon.

It's been a great year, thanks to everyone for welcoming me and reading my reviews! I'm looking forward to another one ahead. With my first baby due in October, I'm very much hoping I can fit in my reading and reviewing around the demands of a new born baby :-D

Guest Post & Giveaway with Paranormal Romance Author Linda Wisdom

I am very excited to welcome Linda Wisdom to Book Chick City today. Linda has visited the blog before and she's such a wonderful guest that I'm always so happy to have her on the blog. My review of 'Demon's Are A Girl's Best Friend', Linda's most recent release, will be coming soon!

Linda has published more than 70 novels with 13 million copies sold worldwide. Her bestselling books have been nominated for RT Book Reviews awards and the RWA RITA Award. She recently won the RT Book Reviews Career Achievement Award for 'Hex in High Heels'. Linda lives with her husband in Murrieta, California, where she is working on her next book, 'A Demon Does it Better', set to release in January 2012.

So please give a warm welcome to Linda...
A Magickal Recipe For…

First off, thank you so much Carolyn, for having me here!

Take one kick ass witch, add one sexy half fire demon, a pinch of mouthy teenager, a smidgen of bejeweled black widow spider tattoo, a touch of caffeine-high ferrets, and a large helping of an ancient Mayan curse. Heat to a smoldering temperature and you’ve got a recipe for some hot lovin’, a liberal dose of snark and enough magick to light up your life.

Yes, the cover and title is different from the previous four books, but the stories are the same.

Witch Maggie O’Malley first appeared in Hex in High Heels and is now strutting her stuff while dealing with demon Declan who’s very good eye candy and wouldn’t mind creating some wild magick with the hexy witch.

Maggie, who’s not a mom type, ends up a guardian for a teenage girl who’s been slated as the sacrifice to release an ancient Mayan demon god called The Destroyer. Not that it deters Declan. Especially since he has a stake in this not happening. As in let’s not end the world just now, shall we?

I like to think of Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend as a fun ride. I hope you see it that way too.

Please visit my website, www.lindawisdom.com, to see new covers along with my backlist books I’m putting up as ebooks.

To finish it off, here’s a peek into what happens if a demon ticks off a witch.

“He asked for my number,” Sybil chattered away in the car.

“And you were a good little elf and didn’t give it to him.” Maggie downshifted as she turned a corner. Her silence was telling. “Please tell me you at least checked him out!”

“Definitely.”

“Not his ass, him overall. You did some interrogation mojo on him, right?”

“He knows I’m with the Guard. Do you really think he’d try something?”

“Hm, let’s see. There was that gremlin we brought in two months ago. He knew you were with the Guard and he also thought you were a total pushover. Which you almost were because he trotted out a sob story worthy of a midnight soap opera on the Supe Love Channel.”

“I went through my usual list of questions as we drank and danced and his answers were all I hoped for,” she assured her friend.“

Her cell phone chirping All Star interrupted Maggie’s comment about sanity having more than one meaning. Without looking down she tapped her Bluetooth button on her steering wheel to answer.

“O’Malley.”

“Tell your friend that Algar has to cancel their dinner date this weekend. He’s been called back to the Dark Country,” Declan’s voice flowed through the microphone like smooth jazz.

Maggie shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “How did you get this number?”

“What did you do to him?” Sybil demanded, practically leaning across Maggie.

“Trying to drive here, babe,” Maggie told her.

“I want to know what you did to him, Declan!” Sybil’s voice grew shrill even as she still partially obstructed Maggie’s vision.

“Syb!” She pushed at her shoulder. “I can’t see the road!”

“Algar’s a great person and there was no reason for you to mess with my social life,” Sybil growled.

“Trust me, there was an excellent reason.”

“I want to know how you got this number!” Maggie chimed in.

“Sweet dreams, Maggie.” He clicked off.

Maggie muttered a variety of curses in multiple languages while Sybil added a few of her own.

“That’s it. I’m dragging that Anna in tomorrow.” Sybil fell back against her seat. “My eight brothers weren’t allowed to mess with my social life, so there’s no reason for him to think he can.” A soft chirp sounded from her bag. She pulled out her cell phone and began reading. “Oh boy.”

“Oh boy what?”

“Yours isn’t the only cell number Declan dug up. He texted me a report on Algar. It seems that son of a whore has a few side businesses we need to check into.” Sybil’s delicate features turned hard.

Maggie grimaced. “So Declan did a good thing.”

“Yes.”

“Oh.”

Sybil looked at the witch. “Did you do something?”

Maggie took a deep breath. “Remember Jim Morrison singing about lighting his fire? Well, I guess you’d say I doused Declan’s.”

Her friend gaped then burst out laughing. “Let’s hope he’s wash and wear.”

###

When Anna walked into Declan’s office she found him standing in the midst of a downpour that didn’t touch one piece of furniture.

She pressed her hands over her mouth and just stared with saucer-size midnight black eyes as her shoulders began shaking with suppressed laughter. “Declan?” she choked out the name.

The long-suffering demon wiped his face as steam rose up from his clothing.

“Anna, would you get me a towel please?”

Guest Review by Jo

RATING: 8/10 - Very good, would definitely recommend

GOODREADS SUMMARY:

Rich, titled, and undead, gentleman vampyre James Maitland fears himself doomed to a cold and lonely existence-until Scottish witch Blaire Lindsay arrives, and things begin to heat up considerably...

REVIEW:

I absolutely love anything Regency, and when I read the summary for 'It Happened One Bite' I was very much looking forward to getting stuck into this Regency vampire tale.

The story opens with our heroine, Blaire's Mum casting a spell on the hero, James. A vision has forewarned that he will be a danger to her daughter and so like any good Mum she and her coven puts James into a cursed sleep.

Twenty years later, Blair is all grown up and after discovering a sleeping man in her brother's newly inherited castle, she awakens James from his magical slumber. Blair is a 'Battle Born' witch and whilse she thinks she can handle anyhting, this is one situation that might be over her head! But James is the perfect vampire gentleman and vows to protect her.

There is a mystery here, we find out James has had two vampires looking for him for many years, and the other mystery is why Blair's Mum imprisoned James into a slumber in the first place. We know it's because of a vision but we don't find out until the end.

The characters are very likeable, and their is a good strong chemistry between the two leads. Blair is very feisty, and can create fireballs from thin air - how cool is that?! James really is a gentleman, and his vampire side is really endearing rather than the stereotypical Alpha Vamps we know (and love) already.

I really enjoyed this, but the conclusions of the mysteries felt somewhat lacking. While it reads at a good pace, there were a couple of places that seemed to drag too. One of the main things for me though was while I really liked James, his friend that appears in here almost stole the show from him! But I do think when we come to read his book it will be brilliant! This was my first Lydia Dare romance, but I know it will not be my last because I enjoyed her writing and the whole story was very heartwarming.

VERDICT:

A romantic and endearing story. The characters journey is really lovely to read and to experience, and their love and romance is very heartwarming and gave me warm fuzzies! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

BOOK REVIEW: 'Cowboy Fever' by Joanne Kennedy

Title: Cowboy Fever
Author: Joanne Kennedy
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Publication Date: March 2011
ARC: 416 Pages
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Reviewed by: Laura

RATING: 6/10 - Good

GOODREADS SUMMARY:

Miss Rodeo Wyoming Jodie Bryce is back from the big city to find that her childhood friend Teague Treadwell's rugged cowboy charm never looked better. But Teague thinks Jodie's success lifted her out of his reach, and now he's got to shed his bad boy image to be worthy of the girl next door.

REVIEW:

This is a sweet, contemporary romance that's a quick and easy read. Girl next door and former tomboy Jodie shed her image years ago, leaving the small town she grew up in to become a rodeo queen.

But things change and Jodie has returned home, glad to leave the make up and glitz behind she has a vision to transform her deceased father's ranch into a riding centre for people with disabilities. In all the years she's been away she has never forgotten bad boy next door Teague.

Teague has always been a little bit in love with Jodie, but things have changed. He's cleaned up his image and become a successful businessman and ranch owner in the years since she's been away. Yet, despite everything a part of him still doesn't think he's good enough for her.

There were some things that really worked in this story and some other bits not so. Teague cares for his older brother with Downs Syndrome, which gives him the complex role of brother, parent and carer. This part of the story was well written, interesting and added a rich layer to Teague's characterisation. Jodie has trouble shedding her glitzy, rodeo queen image and reinvent herself and get her new career taken seriously. As a consequence, she shows grit and determination as well as compassion.

Then there's the not so good. There is an odd sub plot about Courtney a wealthy, young woman who for some inexplicable reason desperately wants to be with Teague and won't leave him alone. It gets complicated with the role of her rich, magnate father, some polo players and a nasty arson plot which all got a little bit strange to be honest. I actually think the story might have been better without it included.

VERDICT:

While this was an enjoyable story, it missed the spark of a brilliant story. The plot was a little muddled at times and distracted from the central love story, which meant I didn't always fully engage with the main characters.

I did however, very much enjoy the background of Teague's Downs Syndrome brother and Jodie's role setting up her ranch as a disabled riding centre, and when the love story worked it was both sexy and tender.

BOOK REVIEW: 'The Rebel Prince' by Celine Kiernan

Title: The Rebel Prince (Moorehawke Trilogy #3)
Author: Celine Kiernan
Publisher: Orbit
Publication Date: Oct 2010
Paperback: 435 Pages
Genre: Fantasy
Source: Review Copy

Reviewed by: Laura

RATING: 8/10 - Brilliant, couldn't put it down

BACK COVER:

Wynter Moorehawke has braved bandits and Loup-Garous to find her way to Alberon-the exiled, rebel prince. But now that she's there, she will learn firsthand that politics is a deadly mistress. With the king and his heir on the edge of war and alliances made with deadly enemies, the Kingdom is torn not just by civil war - but strife between the various factions as well. Wynter knows that no one has the answer to the problems that plague the Kingdom - and she knows that their differences will not just tear apart her friends - but the Kingdom as well.

REVIEW:

We've waited two books to meet him, so much that I wondered if we ever would. But, book three in this trilogy is finally about the alleged traitor, Prince Alberon. Once again the story is more about lethal political games than it is about action, as Wynter and Alberon's half brother Razi try to get to the bottom of the split in the kingdom and prevent an all out war between father and son.

Prince Alberon is not quite how I expected him to be. We have seen him thus far only through the eyes of Razi and Wynter, which has been slightly rose-tinted and filled with childhood memories. The grown up Alberon is a mixture of nobility and bravery, but at the same time spoilt and impetuous. And I wasn't able to gel with him the same way I have with other characters in the books. There were times when I felt like giving him a good slap!

At last, and most importantly we finally discover what the feared 'bloody machine' is that King Jonathan and Wynter's father have done everything in their power to hide. The revelation shocking to our three main characters, but perhaps more disturbing is Alberon's plans for it.

Wynter, Razi and Christopher arrive in the camp accompanied by the Merron, Christopher's people. But after the events of the last book their relationship with Razi is shaky. And yet despite those shocking events, I still could not help but like most of these strange people, with their ancient habits and traditions and wanted them to get the new beginning they were so desperately seeking.

Prince Alberon's camp is made up of numerous political envoys from different nations and the relationships between them are tentative at best. But when the hideously violent Loup Garous arrive, the same people that enslaved and mutilated the man she loves, Wynter is suddenly very fearful for the future. It seemed that Alberon the boy she had once loved like a brother, was no longer a person she knows or understands.

For a lot of the book I had absolutely no idea how it was going to end. I got to about three quarters of the way through and I still had no idea and began to get worried that things weren't going to get tied up as nicely as I would have hoped for a trilogy. The ending seemed to come out of nowhere and totally took me by surprise. It's an explosion of edge of your seat action and horror. Then it all ended as abruptly as it started. But, never fear there is an epilogue, which in a one word summary was lovely.

VERDICT:

This has been a fantastic trilogy. The lure of the books has to be Celine Kiernan's amazing characterisation. These were people I loved, feared for and cared about. Wynter was such a fabulous heroine and at the same time while still brave and determined, very different from heroines seen in a lot of stories at the moment. Don't be put off by the less action scenes, because the political games and revelations are as thrilling and definitely keep those pages turning.
