'Where Stories Are Made' with historical romance author, Nicola Cornick

'Where Stories Are Made' is a regular feature here at Book Chick City. It's where an author takes us on a tour of their writing place, be it an office, coffee shop or park and tells us about their writing day in words and pictures.

My guest today is historical romance author, Nicola Cornick...

Whisper of Scandal: Out Now
One Wicked Sin: Out Now
Mistress by Midnight: Out Now

Thank you, Book Chick City, for inviting me to drop by to tell you where my stories are made.

This is my study. Until last year “my room” actually doubled up as the kitchen. Then, at the beginning of last year, I got my own room. It’s beautiful and I love it. It’s now been colonised by the cat as well, but we all have to share sometimes.

Here are my bookshelves. When I put them in I thought there would be masses of space on them. But somehow my books have expanded to fit the shelves available. These are my research books, mainly for the Regency period, but some other historical non-fiction as well. I’ve had an absolute ball collecting my reference books and I add to them all the time. One of these days those shelves will go straight through the floor because they are groaning under the weight of so many books! Research is one of the things that I love about being a historical author. I grab a book from the shelves, intending to look up something specific, and I read some other fascinating snippet and off I go at a tangent… I get some of my best story ideas that way. I remember once I was researching shopping in the Regency period and I saw a reference to lottery tickets and that gave me an idea for an entire book! There is everything on these shelves from the history of beards to the history of belly dancing.

On the wall to the left of my desk is a framed poster of the cover of my first single title historical, Deceived. I did my first book signing at the RWA Conference in Atlanta a few years ago and they let me keep the poster as a souvenir. My husband had it framed for me to celebrate the publication of my first book for HQN. It’s enormous and one night it fell off the wall with a huge crash and almost squashed the cat who used up one of her nine lives. The poster is a wonderful reminder of how lucky and privileged I feel to be writing Regency historicals for HQN but it’s also a bit daunting. On those days when I sit at my laptop and absolutely no ideas come and every word feels as though it’s been weighted with lead I see the big book cover and think: “I’m an impostor!” A lot of people tell me that they feel like that about their jobs sometimes; those moments when we all question whether we really know what we are doing. The moments that you hope doctors and pilots don’t have. With writing the whole process seems so reliant on nothing more tangible than intuition and imagination sometimes. Jo Beverley recently called the writing process “alchemy” and there is something magical and mysterious about it. Sure, there is craft and skill and structure, lots of hard work and many other components, but in my experience writing is also taking risks and going with what feel right – oh, and a large dose of luck, of being in the right place at the right time with the right book.

On the other wall is a black and white photograph of the gardens at Ashdown House. Like a lot of people I wear two hats – I write and I also work for the National Trust for England and Wales, showing visitors around an historic house. Ashdown is another of my passions, a stunningly beautiful seventeenth century hunting lodge that provides me with a great deal of inspiration. Simply walking up the magnificent oak staircase makes me feel as though I have been transported back in time. On a more practical note, working at Ashdown also gets me out of the house and meeting real people. Being a writer is a wonderful job but I also find it quite a lonely one sometimes. Talking to people, listening to them, answering questions about Ashdown and simply getting out and about is another great way for me to find story ideas.

Finally there is the view from my window. Strictly speaking it’s not in my room but it is very inspiring as well as distracting (all those comings and goings in the street outside!) Concentration and self-discipline can be a big issue for me as a writer. But it’s also lovely to have the countryside on my doorstep. When I’m wrestling with my plot and can’t make any headway I’ll go out for a walk, hoping that exercise and fresh air will help. Usually I can walk off the writer’s block.

I hope you have enjoyed this peek into the place where my stories are made!

RATING: 8/10 - Brilliant, couldn't put it down

SUMMARY:

The only excitement Shannon Parker expects while on summer vacation is a little shopping. But when an antique vase calls to her, she finds herself transported to Partholon, where she's treated like a goddess. A very temperamental goddess…

Somehow Shannon has stepped into another's role as the Goddess Incarnate of Epona. And while there's an upside—what woman doesn't like lots of pampering?—it also comes with a ritual marriage to a centaur and threats against her new people. Oh, and everyone disliking her because they think she's her double.

Somehow Shannon needs to figure out how to get back to Oklahoma without being killed, married to a horse or losing her mind….(Goodreads)

REVIEW:

This is a paranormal romance with a real difference, in fact it has quite a fantasy feel about it. School teacher Shannon Parker gets much more than she bargained for when she buys a vase at an antiques sale. Suddenly she finds herself transported to another universe where she is a goddess. A goddess that also happens to be a bit of a b*tch too.

I loved the originality of this book, the new world with goddesses, magical powers and mythical creatures. But also the twist of Shannon being transported into this world and only her handmaiden knowing that she's any different.

Shannon is a fun and determined character, she embraces her new life and all of the responsibilities this includes. The plot takes a little which to take off, the whole antiques buying thing was a little too long, but once it got into its swing I was absolutely hooked. Shannon soon discovers that life as a goddess is not all gorgeous clothes, beautiful jewels and luxuries. With the threat of war and a small pox outbreak, as well as the bizarre need not her to do a topless ceremony every two weeks (I'm not quite sure what that was all about), the story is engaging and the baddies perfectly, hideously creepy.

The other big part of the book is of course the romance. When I first started reading, I was slightly nervous about it. The hero is a centaur - top half man, bottom half horse, and for a while the mind boggled! I'm sure you know what I mean! But thankfully I needn't have worried, it all worked out fine. Actually by the end of the book, I quite fancied a hot centaur of my very own, even if he did have a weird name - ClanFintan.

One thing that slightly annoyed me was Shannon's habit of referring to her friends as 'girlfriend', this may be a culture thing, as it's not really an English turn of phrase.

There were some superb characters in this book, and Shannon's real world friends and family were cleverly written into her new reality, although often with a twist. The impact of Rhiannon's selfishness (the goddess Shannon had swapped place with), often making Shannon's job a difficult one. But they are written so well you become engaged with many of their fates and not just of Shannon and ClanFintan's.

The book is not simply a romance, in fact the impending war with the vile Fomorians, and the reality of their brutality does add a nice horror edge that I very much enjoyed.

VERDICT:

A really fantastic book, I loved it and was sad when it finished. I hope to be able to read the next two in quick succession. Shannon was a great, witty heroine and ClanFintan the perfect, chivalrous hero any girl would want."Divine by Mistake" is a fab mix of romance, fantasy, paranormal and horror.

SUMMARY:

Merryn Fenner is on a mission to ruin the Duke of Farne. A beautiful bluestocking with a penchant for justice. Merryn has waited ten years to satisfy her revenge against sensual, mysterious Farrick Northesk. Her family name had been tarnished at his hands, her life destroyed. And now she intends to return the favour - by finding the true heir to the duke's title and disinheriting Garrick.

Yet when a disaster traps Merryn and Garrick together, white-hot desire stirs between the two sworn enemies. Her reputation utterly compromised. Merryn is forced to do the one thing she cannot bear: accept the scandalous marriage proposal of the man she has vowed to ruin.

REVIEW:

Mistress by Midnight” is the third book in the ‘The Scandalous Women of the Ton’ series by Nicola Cornick, and the best so far in my opinion. Although the format is very much the same with each novel I really enjoy Cornick’s style of writing, it’s very easy to read and her stories seem to suck me in from the first chapter. She is fast becoming one of my favourite historical romance authors.

Our heroine is Merryn Fenner, a young woman in her early twenties who is quite different from the other ladies of the ton. Merryn isn’t much into fashion and grand balls and thinks being a debutante is a tedious business. She would rather curl up with a good book, go to the theatre or attend lectures to broaden her mind.

Merryn is an intellectual, educated woman and is working secretly for an inquiry agency as a working woman, which is not the done thing in high society. Her main aim is taking revenge on the Duke of Farne for the death of her brother and the pain he caused ten years before.

At five feet tall, she maybe small, but she’s feisty and smart. I loved the way that when she became angry, and this usually happened when around Garrick, she lifts her chin and marches off in the opposite direction to show her displeasure. She is just so cute. I can totally understand why Garrick would be utterly taken with her.

Garrick Northesk, the Duke of Farne is our hero and he’s one of my all time favourites. I just fell hook line and sinker for this particular gentleman. He's strong and gorgeous, but sweet and caring with a touch of vulnerability, a great combination. He has a dark past which is revealed slowly and the outcome surprises all, especially Merryn...

Both Merryn and Garrick are wonderful characters. I fell in love with both of them. They are so lonely and yet don’t want to admit it. They both have a past that continues to weave its way into their present and prevents them from giving in to their feelings. But this restraint is what gives their relationship so much fire and passion. Their dialogue is wonderful, at times very witty and at other times intense and tender. Their relationship takes time to grow, which made the happy ending so much more satisfying.

VERDICT:

Another wonderful historical romance from Ms Cornick. If you haven’t read this author before then I recommend you do – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, especially if you love historical romance. “Mistress by Midnight” is a fabulous read and I would recommend it just for the jail scene alone *fans self*

REVIEWED BY LAURA

RATING: 6/10 - Good

SUMMARY

Lightning-struck sleuth Harper Connelly and her stepbrother Tolliver take a break from looking for the dead to visit the two little girls they both think of as family. But as they travel to Texas, memories of their horrible childhood resurface. Family secrets ensnare them both, as Tolliver learns his father is out of jail and Harper finally discovers what happened to her missing sister Cameron so many years before. And what she finds will change her world forever. (Goodreads)

REVIEW

If you haven't read of the Harper Connolly series before, it's from the viewpoint of Harper a young woman who was struck by lightening in her teens and since then has been able to sense the dead. Not as in talk to the dead, but sense where they're buried, how long they've been dead for and the cause of death. Since that fateful day she and her stepbrother Tolliver have made a living traveling the country investigating the causes of different people's deaths.

Book four in the series is very much about Harper and Tolliver's family life, although of course the usual murder mystery element is included as Harper unintentionally unravels some deep family secrets at her latest job. We finally meet their half sisters, Tolliver's brother and Tolliver's drug addict father is released from jail much to their displeasure.

The action takes no time in getting going with Tolliver getting shot in their motel room and leaving Harper on her own. I hadn't quite realised how vulnerable Harper really was until her support was taken away, and without Tolliver she seems like a broken doll. Her actions were erratic and she seemed very lost.

This book very much felt like Charlaine Harris was drawing the series to a close, although I cannot find anything on her website that confirms that. But the great thing is we finally get some answers. Most importantly about Harper and Tolliver's past and what happened to Harper's sister Cameron who has been missing for years. This was the favourite part for me, it was nice to seem Harper finally find out the truth and be allowed to grieve for her sister.

What I did struggle with and didn't actually expect to was Harper and Tolliver's relationship. It's strange as I wanted them to get together in the last book and was really routing for them, having no problem with them being step brother and sister. But the relationship did not seem to translate that well in this book. Harper herself describes her relationship with Tolliver has having a certain 'ick' factor. And that's how it felt... Icky. I think I might have something to do with the fact that they still referred to themselves as brother and sister or perhaps this was enhanced by their family's reaction to their news. But the sex scenes just made me squirm uncomfortably in my seat.

This is the first time I have listened to one of Charlaine Harris books as an audiobook, instead of reading it in the traditional way. I'm a big fan of hers, but couldn't decide if the story lacked a little pace or the narrator was reading it too slow. Charlaine has a distinct and detailed writing style, and I wonder if it's that when I read her books myself I skip over a lot of the erroneous I had a shower and shaved my legs detail which she is quite famous for, and which seemed a bit tedious when described in an audiobook. I found myself getting a little bored at times.

VERDICT

This is not the best book in the series so far, but it was nice to finally get some answers about Harper's sister. If you're a fan of the books it is worth reading to get some closure, but I have to say I think Charlaine Harris has written a lot better.

CAROLYN'S WISHLIST

Another fab looking/sounding urban fantasy series!

Royal Street (Sentinels of New Orleans #1)
Suzanne Johnson (Tor)
Publication Date: April 2012
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Summary:

As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco’s job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. DJ's boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.

Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans’ fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters.

While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the Otherworld crumbled. Now, the undead and the restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering soldiers sent to help the city recover.

To make it worse, Gerald St. Simon has gone missing, the wizards’ Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ’s new partner, and undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and the killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love creates one bitter gumbo. (Goodreads)
This one looks pretty good...I'm not reading as much YA as I used to, but this does sound interesting.

Struck
Jennifer Bosworth (Farrar, Straus & Giroux)
Publication Date: May 2012
Genre: Science Fiction
Young Adult

Summary:

When Los Angeles is devastated by a catastrophic earthquake, seventeen-year-old human lightning rod, Mia Price, finds herself at the center of a power struggle between two fanatical doomsday cults, one that wants to save the world, and one that wants to destroy it... and she will be the deciding factor in which cult succeeds at their aim. (Goodreads)
LAURA'S WISHLIST

I came across this book while on Goodreads. A few people have posted early reviews, and it looks amazing. I love the mix of magic and intrigue and of course the promise of a good love story.

In The Night Circus
Erin Morgernstern (DoubleDay)
Publication Date: September 2012
Genre: Fantasy

Summary:

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des RĂªves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart. (Goodreads)

This book's not out until next year, so there's still a bit of a wait to go. Firstly, I think the cover is just gorgeous! But, I'm intrigued by the world the author has created, there's something almost a bit Greek Mythology-esque about it.
