EARTH GIRL (#1)

CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I think this UK cover is gorgeous. You are in no doubt what genre this is when you look at the cover. I love the sun shining behind the Empire State Building and the birds flying into the sky. I love the girl on the edge of a building and I wonder what’s going on in the world below. The font is just genius. It just really works. This cover speaks to me! Fab.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: This is so atmospheric, like Carolyn I really like the use of the Empire State Building in the background. The use of the sun and the striking silhouettes of the birds, the girl and even the crane create a interesting tableau. I’m also a big fan of the slogan ‘One choice will change her world forever’ the spacing of the words gives it multiple meanings. Cleverly done.

666 PARK AVENUE (666 Park Avenue #1)
Release Date: July 2012 | Publisher: Canvas | Genre: Paranormal| Artist: Unknown

GABRIELLA PIERCE ONLINE
Website | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is the UK cover and it’s a very girly, pretty cover. I like how they’ve done the title with the decoration around it. The colours are good with the New York City skyline in the background. The only aspect I don’t particularly like is the models hair – far too 80s for my liking – too much hairspray!
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: The first thing that speaks to me on this cover is the font used for the title. I like how it also works as an address sign. The overall cover has a smoky hue to it, which is pretty and adds to the design and works well with the colours. I especially like how the bottom of her dress looks like smoke.

SERPENT’S KISS (Elder Races #3)
Release Date: July 2012 | Publisher: Piatkus | Genre: Paranormal Romance | Artist: Unknown

THEA HARRISON ONLINE
Website | Twitter | Facebook | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: When I saw this UK cover my first thoughts were, oh pretty. And they haven’t really changed. I think they use the same model for each of the books in the series, which is ok, but it doesn’t always tally with the character in the book. I really like the font for the title though, girly swirls but not over the top to the point you can’t read what it says. Very simple, but I like it.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: As Carolyn says, this is so pretty! It’s a very feminine cover with the lilac and the use of stars for the title font, even down to the heroine’s pose, which is both demure and sexy. All the elements are quite simple, but still eye catching.

PASSION PLAY (River of Souls#1)
Release Date: April 2012 | Publisher: Tor | Genre: Fantasy | Artist: Unknown

BETH BERNOBICH ONLINE
Website | Twitter | Facebook | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is a great cover, lots of atmosphere. The heroine looks sexy but badass holding the knife. Colours work really well together and the title font is perfect.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: You know, I’m not too sure on this one. I think the second book in the series (below) is better. I’m not sure on the girl’s pose, I don’t why but it looks slightly odd. I do like the fonts and the knife in her hand though.

QUEEN’S HUNT (River of Souls #2)
Release Date: May 2012 | Publisher: Tor | Genre: Fantasy | Artist: Unknown

BETH BERNOBICH ONLINE
Website | Twitter | Facebook | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is the second book in the series and I can’t say that I like this as much as I do Passion Play (above), but it’s still good. It’s not as atmospheric and the colours are more green/yellow which aren’t my favourite colours. But it has a pirate feel to it with her long hair, long sword and ship in the background.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: I definitely like this cover more. Her pose, the sword held across her body, but also the sea in the background which kind of gives it, as Carolyn says, a pirate feel. The dark clouds behind her look ominous and add to the energy of the design.

KITTY STEALS THE SHOW (Kitty Norville #10)

CARRIE VAUGHN ONLINE

CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is the UK cover and I like it. The series is very consistent with the covers, which I’m pleased about. I like the blue tone’s and even though there are many different fonts, I think in this case it works well.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: It is definitely consistent with the series which is a big plus, I like it when things match! My only thing is I think it does look quite photographic, and I generally prefer styles that look a bit more like an illustration or a drawn photo. Am I making sense? Yet it’s still a good looking cover and Kitty looks pretty, although not sure she would be in a dress during the full moon?

SPELLFIRE (Nightkeepers #8)
Release Date: Nov 2012 | Publisher: Signet | Genre: Urban Fantasy | Artist: Unknown

JESSICA ANDERSEN ONLINE
Website | Facebook | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I really love this cover. I like everything about it. I think I would like it better if the male model had a shirt on or something, just showing a little bit of chest to tantalise us, but I’m loving the tattoo and gun. The chick is very pretty and sexy and I like that she’s showing some of her magic/skills on the cover, makes it intriguing. Also like the fire and the font of the title. All round a great cover.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: You know how I always complain about half naked men on book covers. Well, you’re never going to believe it, but I actually like this one! This cover is Hot with a capital ‘H’! It’s sexy, intriguing and powerful all in one go. Loving the fire, the magical powers on the girl’s hands and the gun in his. If I saw it in a book shop it would be in my hands before I could blink.

A STROKE OF DUMB LUCK

SHILOH WALKER ONLINE
Website | Twitter | Facebook | Free Read
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I really like the art work here. Love the heroine, she looks very cool. Love her blonde hair, gloves and the lovely big sword. She looks as though she can definitely take care of herself! I also like the beasts – not sure if they are friend or foe, but they look fierce.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: This has got a definite manga/comic book feel to it. But it looks great, the heroine looks very kick-ass and dangerous and cute too. Her sword is awesome! Also loving the beasts in the background.

SHADOW BOUND (Unbound #2)
Release Date: May 2012 | Publisher: Mira UK | Genre: Urban Fantasy | Artist: Unknown

RACHEL VINCENT ONLINE
Website | Twitter | Facebook | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is a huge shift in design from the first book in this series, and I do really like it, except for two things: the girl’s expression and the red. When I read the cover, “In a world of black and white, can their love survive in the shadows?” I expected that, blacks, whites, greys – I just don’t think the red colour really goes IMO. Other than that I really like the overall design.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Hmm I have to say I’m a much bigger fan of the US cover of this book, it’s much prettier. As Carolyn says this is a big step away from the first book and that kind of disappoints me as a I like my book series to sit together nicely on my bookshelf. That being said, I do like the red smoke that morphs into the heroine’s face.

FURY’S KISS (Dorina Basarab #3)
Release Date: Oct 2012 |Publisher: Signet | Genre: Urban Fantasy | Artist: Unknown

KAREN CHANCE ONLINE
Website | Facebook | Amazon UK & US
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is a great cover. I love the pinky/mauve font colour and the models pose. I think the only thing I don’t like is her hand on the gun. It looks a bit wrong, like a blokes hand rather than a hand of a pretty model. Other than that it’s a really nice addition to the series.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Like her gun, this cover is smoking! Great font used for the title cover, her stance with the gun just works. Not too sure about the leather trousers and waistcoat, do the trousers not look a bit wrinkly? I hadn’t noticed the hand until I read Carolyn’s comments, but now I’ve noticed it I do think she’s right! However, I like this cover, as I do like my tough heroines.

THE KINGMAKERS (Vampire Empire #3)
Release Date: Sept 2012 |Publisher: Pyr | Genre: Urban Fantasy | Artist: Chris McGrath

CLAY & SUSAN GRIFFITH ONLINE
Website | Twitter | Facebook
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I love these covers by Chris McGrath, all three in the series have been consistent. They are very details but without being too busy. The chick looks fierce and I love her outfit. The guy in the background looks ominous with his eyes shining. There’s nothing I don’t like about this cover. Fab.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Oh yes, this is definitely a fab cover! It’s dark and gothic and powerful. I love how the magic coming from the guy’s hand also looks a bit like blood and blends into the colour of the title. That despite the fact they are obviously surrounded you just know they are going to get out of it a kick some serious butt. And the girl looks fabulous you’d take one look at her face and walk away!

CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: This is the UK cover and I like everything about it apart from the model. I think she’s too young and makes this look a bit YA. But other than that I think it’s really pretty. I love the turquoise colour of the title and the decoration, along with the moon and woodland background. Very nice.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Like Carolyn I like everything on it except the model. Far too young and what a strange expression she has on her face! I hate to be mean, but she completely ruins it. Other than that I do like the moon and the very pretty fonts and graphics.

CAROLYN’S FAVOURITE
My favourite cover this week is ‘Earth Girl’, closely followed by ‘Spellfire’ and ‘The Kingmakers’.

LAURA’S FAVOURITE
You’re never going to believe it, but I think ‘Spellfire’ is my favourite! I also really like ‘The Kingmakers’.

I am liking Shadow Bound by Rachel Vincent. It just grabs me as very striking. I was excited to see a new one for Thea Harrison as well. Thanks for sharing

You’re welcome! Glad you like the covers. I agree that SHADOW BOUND is striking, but I don’t think the red goes with the title…
