‘Cover Crush’ is a regular feature here at BCC. We love covers – they’re the first thing that catches our eye and will be the primary reason we pick up a book. This feature is where we highlight gorgeous covers of books we’ve seen around the blogosphere.
We’ve found some lovely new covers this week. Below are some of our favourites! We’ve kept the images nice and large so you can take a good look! Enjoy
JILL KISMET (The Complete Series 1-6)

CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: The colours are lovely and the heroine is fab. She’s wicked cool and I love her stance, her hair with silvery highlights and the gun. It just works. A great cover.
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Firstly, purple is in fact one of my favourite colours. I love the heroine’s pose, holding the gun with her head slightly down ready to face trouble. She looks like just my type of character!

INCARNATION
Release Date: Sept 2012 | Publisher: Gallery Books | Genre: Steampunk YA
Artist: Unknown

|
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I love this cover! There’s just so much going on without being cluttered and it’s gorgeous to boot. I love the model’s pose, her beautiful fly-away auburn hair, her dress, her expression, and I think the font for the title works brilliantly, along with the steampunk background makes this one of my favourite covers on the year so far.
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: This cover is just so visual! It immediately screams London at me, which as a Brit Chick is always a good thing. I love the overlay of clocks over the backdrop of the Houses of Parliament. Always the combination of red hair and the red coat works really well.

BLOOD AND WHISKEY (Cowboy & Vampire #2)
Release Date: May 2012 | Publisher: Pumpjack | Genre: Dark Romantic Mystery
Artist: Unknown

| CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I love the first cover in this series, and actually prefer it to this one, but I still like it. I agree with Laura, it has great Southern undertones and I will definitely be buying this one. | LAURA’S THOUGHTS: This actually says fun to me. But manages to pull off a dark undertone too. It’s got a cute Southern feel to it. The polka dots and the red star tattoo are a nice addition. |
KILL ME SOFTLY
Release Date: April 2012 | Publisher: EgmontUSA | Genre: Paranormal YA
Artist: Unknown
|
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I know this cover has been around for a while, but I wanted to add it as it’s gorgeous. It’s a very striking and provocative image and I agree with Laura that it symbolises love and death, making me want to read it.
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Gorgeous! Roses were my wedding flowers… Ok I’m getting distracted! I think the red and white mix of blood on the rose is cleverly done. At first glance you don’t quite realise that it’s blood. It combines one of the most ultimate symbols of love with death. Definitely eye catching.

ALCHEMYSTIC (Spellmason Chronicles #1)
Release Date: Sept 2012 | Publisher: Ace | Genre: Urban Fantasy
Artist: Unknown
|
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I really like this cover. It has great atmosphere with the blue tones, large moon and city scape. I really like the gargoyle and heroine, she looks sweet, and the fact she’s standing in front of the gargoyle makes me wonder about the two of them and how their lives intertwine. I’m definitely intrigued…
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Hmm I have mixed feelings about this book cover. Really like the gargoyle and the full moon. Not so sure about the heroine’s pose of the italic font. But I would still pick it up if I saw it in a bookshop!

UNLEASHED (Demon Lovers #4)
Release Date: April 2012 | Publisher: Self-Published | Genre: Paranormal Romance
Artist: Unknown

KATE DOUGLAS ONLINE
|
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: Ok, so this one I have mixed thoughts about but overall I do like it. The top is seriously questionable though, it looks as though she’s purposefully pulled it up just to show off her bra/boobs – not a good look. Also, the background could have done with some work. But, I love the blue tones colours, the dog and the model’s expression and hair – she looks funky and cool.
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Ha! So agree with Carolyn on the top, what’s going on there? Also a tad 90s… maybe? But, she has a dog, any book with a dog sidekick is a must buy in my books. The colours are really great though. I also like how the sword has been used to underline the book title.

THE QUEEN IS DEAD (The Immortal Empire #2)
Release Date: March 2013 | Publisher: Orbit | Genre: Urban Fantasy
Artist: Don Sipley

|
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I really like this cover. It does have a London feel. I love the font, her dress, the little gun she’s hiding behind her back, and if you look very closely you can see a skeleton in the earth. Very atmospheric cover.
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: This is rather retro cool in my opinion. Her outfit is fantastic! Love the gloves and the little handgun behind her back. The skeleton and crown symbol is very funky in the book’s title too. The background has definitely got a spooky/creepy affect. Overall I really like it.

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE (#1)
PB Release Date: August 2012 | Publisher: Hodder | Genre: Paranormal Romance
Artist: Unknown

|
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS: I really like this new cover. I liked the hardback cover too but this is really in keeping with the story. As laura, I love the hand print and scattered pages. Lovely.
|
LAURA’S THOUGHTS: Oh I like this much better than the copy I have, which is blue with feathers on. Maybe I love it more because I have read the book, but the doorway with the handprint is fab. I also like the scattered book and pages, it looks intriguing and a touch oldy worldy.

I agree with your assessments 100%! I really like the cover on Incarnation though a LOT!

I LOVE the new Daughter of Smoke and Bone cover! I wonder if its an attempt to cross market to the adult market? It looks decidely less YA – and I think that's a good thing b/c while i love and read YA, some people are put off by the genre as "kids books" and dismiss books like this that have more appeal to a wider reading audience. I have the ebook but tempted to buy the new cover in print!
I'm drawn in by Blood and Whiskey and the pulpy The Queen is Dead. The power of good covers means I WishList books based on cover art alone!
Thanks for sharing. What a fun idea for a blog post

Hi, thanks for picking our Blood and Whiskey cover as "crush-worthy." It was designed by Brett Lloyd, a freelancer working out of our home town of Portland, Oregon. He did a great job and we wanted to give him a shout out.
