PUBLISHER: St Martin’s Press
GENRE: Fantasy, Young Adult

A DYING LAND
The Shima Imperium is verging on the brink of environmental collapse; decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshippers of the Lotus Guild. The skies are red as blood, land choked with toxic pollution, wildlife ravaged by mass extinctions.
AN IMPOSSIBLE QUEST
The hunters of the imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a thunder tiger – a legendary beast, half-eagle, half-tiger. But any fool knows thunder tigers have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.
A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL
Yukiko is a child of the Fox clan, possessed of a hidden gift that would see her executed by the Lotus Guild. Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, she finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled thunder tiger for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her. But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS
I know this cover has already been posted several times, but I had to post it as I think it’ just gorgeous. I love the use of all the red, and the illustration is just beautiful. Loving the flyaway hair and sword. The font for the title font also works perfectly. There’s nothing I don’t like about this cover.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS
Wow! I just love it. The contrast of black and red is bold and emotive. The red sky that also looks like splattered blood in particular, juxtaposed with the movement of her hair really caught my eye. Her outfit and tattoo, and the way she’s turning as if to draw her sword makes her look quite simply deadly. The only thing I’m not too keen on is the font for the book title.

Ooh, this is a cool cover. It kind of ties up nicely to the story and I love the ink work on her arm. Very Kick-ass!
I’d definetly pick this up in a bookstore. I like the US cover better than the UK one

I love it. I probably wouldn’t read it though as it looks as though it’s too ‘high’ fantasy for me rather than ‘urban’ fantasy, but the cover is lovely. I really like the UK cover too, but it’s much more subtle.

Ooh-this looks good. The US one looks more what I’d read, but both are beautiful.
