MONDAY MASHUP: Who Will Play Finnick? 50 Shades vs The Library, Crown Bookmark Fit For A Jubilee & Comic Strip Wedges
Welcome to our new feature where we talk about random things we’ve seen around the blogosphere. It could be an interesting article, a book trailer, maybe a fun piece of news we feel you should know about, and maybe even a stylish pair of shoes or handbag we’ve seen (if Laura has her way!). Basically it’s a bit of a mashup! Enjoy…

Another Monday is upon us again and it’s Laura again taking the helm of this week’s MONDAY MASHUP. By the time you read this I shall be on my hols, as I have written this in advance. At the moment I’m hoping for some sunshine and lots of ice cream in Cornwall, so I will see you all soon!
Who Will Play Finnick?
A few of us got a little hot under the collar two weeks ago at the prospect of Robert Pattinson playing Finnick Odair in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ CATCHING FIRE. But, it seems there is no need to worry as Pattinson has denied the rumour *phew*. I’m hoping things haven’t changed too much since my time of writing this. But now there are a new set of contendors mentioned in conjunction with the role including Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch and Garret Hedlund. All good choices I think, do you think so too? I think my favourites are Hammer or Hedlund. Source: Guardian Books
Fifty Shades Vs The Library
This past week and a half, I have been consumed by E. L. James Fifty Shades world, salaciously devouring her trilogy and despite my misgivings absolutely loving it. So it was with interest I read that quite a few libraries were banning the books from their shelves due to its erotic nature. A library in Florida has decided to take a different tack, they are going to do a ‘formal review’ of the books. What does this mean I wondered? It means that three different people in the library before presenting their findings to the Library Director. Now, I know this is very stereotypical of me, so please forgive me as I am sure there are plenty of young and sexy librarians out there… but I did have a bit of a chortle at the idea of several older women with grey hair knotted in a bun, and beads hanging from their glasses with their eyes popping out of their sockets and some of the scenes. Very mean of me I know! *Bad Laura* Anyway, my serious point on this is who is a library to dictate the content of a book? It is an International bestseller and rapidly becoming a publishing phenomenon. Surely it is the library’s duty to ensure they stock this book, not the other way around? Is it not about reflecting modern readers and their tastes?

Crown Bookmark Fit For a Jubilee
So last weekend was a four day weekend in the UK as we celebrated the Queen’s diamond jubilee. I’m away at the moment, but wanted to add something to my Monday Mashup to celebrate it in my own way. So I went on the search for something suitably bookish to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. I came across this really cute crown bookmark, how pretty? I can just the see the Queen with it in her latest copy of Harry Potter
Comic Strip Wedges
No handbags from me this week! But I did have to share with you this awesome comic book shoes. I have a serious case of *I want these* going on! They are just so cool, I particularly love the red ones! I think they would just add a real fun element to your outfit with a nice bit of tongue-in-cheek geekette-ness

Just had to comment on your Fifty Shades vs. the library piece. I totally agree with you. I just finished my Master of Library Science Degree in December and was always taught freedom of information. I think the library should provide the book, regardless of the content. The issue, however, lies with parents who don’t want their kids to get a hold of it. Well, here’s a thought, how about watch your kids and pay attention to what they’re reading and/or looking both inside and outside of the library. I think being a librarian means putting your personal opinions aside. I think parents and guardians need to assume the responsibility of censorship. But…that’s just my two cents.

Emily, I agree completely. Its up to the parents to watch what their kids read. Some parents rely on others to do their parenting for them.

Hello Emily, sorry for my slow reply, I have been away. I, like Gemma completely agree. Libraries should be about information, not censorship. If this is a book people want to read, they should be able to get it at their library.

The idea that libraries are banning 50 Shades seems so ridiculous – don’t most librarians oppose book banning in general? It’s not like 50 Shades is the first erotic fiction novel – it’s just the most popular at the moment. Are these libraries going to ban ALL erotic books?! Since when do libraries restrict what you can read?!

I agree Belle, it surprises me that any librarians think censorship is appropriate. I wonder if this is more of a local government issue than a librarian one??

On the subject of Catching Fire, Someone on the interweb has suggested that the actor who plays Jason Stackhouse on True Blood be an ideal candidate. I haven’t read the books, but from what I submise this could work. He is relativly unknown in movies and he can play many different faccets from loveable dummy, to a someone with deep morals. Plus he looks great shirtless! lol!
As for the comic weges, I know that Converse have done a range with DC characters on the design. Hope they do a Harley Quinn or a Catwoman pair

Oooo, Ryan Kwanten. He is yummy. I’m still holding on to my imaginary hope that he’ll play Christian Grey onscreen. Haha.
