Book Chick City’s Where Stories Are Made feature is where an author takes us on a tour of their writing place, be it an office, coffee shop or park and tells us about their writing day and rituals, along with a few photos. We all like to be a bit nosey sometimes, don’t we?
My place is teensy. My husband, cat, and I all live in a 350 square foot studio. We don’t even live in a hip city – we’re sort of too lazy busy to move right now. So perhaps technically the entire room is my office, but one corner of it moreso than the others, and I’ve got some pictures of that for you.
Because I work nightshift and keep a late schedule on my days off, I spend a lot of time at my desk writing late at night. I’m a little bit of a nester, and I’m a little superstitious, and I like to keep things that remind me of good times or that provide me with good advice around, so here goes:
The “Have faith in the story” is up from when I started nursing. I was a kind of nihilist then. Work was hard – grim, really — and I had an undiagnosed thyroid condition which was making me tired and depressed. I was in therapy, and my therapist asked me what I believed in. I said nothing, and she said that won’t do – that I needed to find something to believe in. The only thing I still enjoyed was writing. So I went home and wrote “Have faith in the story” and taped it over my desk so I would see it every day.
“Write it like it feels” is something Bubbles tells a journalist at the end of the Wire TV series. It’s become a mantra for me. If you’re writing it like it feels, you’re always doing it right.
Other important artifacts include: Harley Quinn in her nurse outfit from Arkham Asylum, a photo from my girlfriend Tasty Temptress who does burlesque locally, and happy notes from my friends, agent, and editor.
This is to the right of my laptop. It’s a collection of tons of little things that I change out out periodically. There’s nichos of Santa Muerte and Erzulie, and fortune cookie fortunes, a check from my husband for one million smooches, and Tulip from the Preacher series, and some nail polishes. (If you could see it, you’d see my laptop keyboard is a little worse for the wear.)
And to the left of my laptop:
A Vogon Pen. No, really. I adored the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as a kid, and was addicted to the infocom game. So when the movie came out, I went and saw it, and then Disney sold these around the same time – I couldn’t not get one. I’m also a huge Disney fan as we’re about to find out….
The Bookcase nearest me:
With my amazing collection of Maleficent snowglobes. I like all the Disney villains, but clearly Maleficent is my favorite.
There we go! Now you’ve seen about a fifth of my entire place . You can also see why I dread moving in the future, ha.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Cassie Alexander is a registered nurse and the author of Nightshifted, the first book in the Edie Spence urban fantasy trilogy, published by St. Martin’s Press.
Cassie likes alchemy, blood, and science, in that order.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Nightshifted is the story of Edie Spence, a nurse who works on a floor for supernatural creatures. Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond…
Edie’s just trying to learn the ropes so she can get through her latest shift unscathed. But when a vampire servant turns to dust under her watch, all hell breaks loose. Now she’s haunted by the man’s dying words—Save Anna—and before she knows it, she’s on a mission to rescue some poor girl from the undead. Which involves crashing a vampire den, falling for a zombie, and fighting for her soul. Grey’s Anatomy was never like this…
Cassie is kindly giving away one copy of NIGHTSHIFTED to one lucky winner!
