I wish I could say I have some fancy-pants office with state of the art electronics and ergonomic furniture and a robot butler that delivers me lemonade and cookies. But I don’t. And to be honest? When I’m writing, I disappear into a whole other world where I don’t notice a single thing around me. So really, I could write anywhere. On my bed. At a desk. In the backyard. On the subway. Wherever I am, I’ll usually block out my surroundings.

With that said, let me show you where I usually work. Where the magic happens, if you will. This is my desk, with my desktop computer. Do I ever sit here? Nope. Do I ever use this desktop computer? Nope.

This is where you’ll usually find me:

Yep, I curl up on this couch next to my bookcase, open my laptop and write. And no early morning writing sessions for me. I’m an afternoon and night writer—I usually start around noon, break for lunch, break for dinner, have some quiet evening time, and then around nine p.m., I’m writing again. Sometimes I’ll stop at midnight, sometimes I’ll just keep going if the inspiration hits!

Now, my favourite thing about my office is the BOOKS. I used to keep this bookcase in my bedroom, but it got to be too much. Note: those cubbies go in deep. The books you see up front? There are like 3 more rows behind them….I own a lot of books…

And notice the exercise bike? Yeah, I didn’t notice it either. That’s probably why I never use it! Still, I have no choice but to keep it around, you know, for when I feel like making a New Year’s resolution :)

As you can see, my reading tastes are pretty eclectic. I read everything.

Oh wait—no more room for books? That’s okay, there’s space in my office closet and out in the hall. Whew! LOL

Seriously, if I’m not surrounded by books, I’m not a happy camper. Know who else is unhappy? My dog, Bear, who keeps ripping open his scab and is now forced to wear a cone until he’s better. So every hour or so, all I hear as I’m trying to write is the thump-thump of his cone smashing into every conceivable surface in the house as he wanders around. Here’s hoping Bear gets better soon!

As you can see, there’s nothing fancy about my workspace. It’s simple, does the job, and lets me be around my favourite things in the world—books!

What about you guys? Is your office as boring as mine? Are you a book hoarder too? And if you’ve got a picture of your bookcase, send it to me! I love getting to see other people’s bookshelves—is that dorky or what?

I spotted three books that I have on my shelf that you have on yours. Saddled and Spurred(got to love Lorelei James),The Virgins Lover by Philippa Gregory and The girl with the dragon Tatoo.

I’m a terrible book hoarder. Just recently I held an event titled “Book-Factor” where I had a clear out of books that I would never read and had been sitting on my TBR pile for ages. Cut out over 50 books!!!!

I’ll send you my photos of my book hoarding, though Carolyn and the others have already seen my books. lol!

Yay, another fellow book hoarder! I don’t feel so alone anymore :) Except, what is this you speak of, “clearing out books”? snort. I don’t get rid of books. ever. they’re too precious! LOL!

YEAAAAH! Clickable photos! Thank you very much, had a good old snoop ;)

Oh how I wish I had that much book shelf space! I have to regularly have a prune out of my books to make way for new ones. It gets harder and harder each time, though there are some that will never leave! Thank goodness for the charity bookshelf up at the hospital where I donate them, makes it a bit more bearable… though I do usually end up coming home with quite a few too.

Poor Bear – he does look sorry for himself :)

Ooh, very nice, Elle! I’m definitely a book hoarder–one of the things I love most about our new house is that DH agreed to let us install a wall of floor-to-ceiling shelves in the master bedroom. *huge grin* I love it, but it still doesn’t hold all the books I own. I’ve got a bunch crammed into the guest closet, and some in boxes in the garage… no exercise bike for us, but we do have an old treadmill that still gets lots of use :)

Thanks for giving us a peek at your workspace and your book collection, Elle!

OMG Fedora, I’m so jealous! Floor-to-ceiling shelves? That’s like a dream come true. My goal is to one day have an entire room filled with bookshelves, and have one of those ladders with wheels that I can use to navigate through my library…

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

Like you, I shun the desk for the comfort of a couch and laptop. I work from home some days so I use the desk set-up with my laptop for that, but I find I need to separate myself from job stuff and writing stuff.

My husband and I filled up an IKEA bookshelf or two so I’ve been using more creative book storage. I had some other shelving I used for family photos and knicknacks, and I’ve been slowing de-cluttering by condensing the photos (sorry mom!) to use the shelf space for books. I’ve also gotten rid of books I know I’ll never read again and probably won’t lend out. That’s TOUGH. :)
