DARK CURRENTS (Agent of Hel #1)
RELEASE DATE: October 2012
PUBLISHER: Roc
GENRE: Urban Fantasy
ARTIST: Unknown
Dark Currents is set in a small Midwestern resort town where paranormal tourism is a booming business. Daisy Johanssen, an incubus’ daughter raised by a loving single mom, is the liaison between the eldritch community and mundane authorities. Most of the time that doesn’t entail anything more challenging than retrieving stolen goods from a puckish pickpocket or tracking down a tourist led astray by a will-o’-the-wisp, but when a young man drowns in an apparent accident that’s not what it seems, Daisy’s job turns deadly earnest.
LAURA’S THOUGHTS
I really like the turquoise, water background on this one, it looks like it’s infused with magic and makes it looks dramatic, especially with the way her hair is flying backwards and electrified with the same light. I’m not sure about the model’s pose, it looks slightly uncomfortable on those rocks! But she does look tough and has what looks like a pretty jeweled knife on her belt, so she looks like my kind of heroine. Without a doubt the series title Agent Of Hel has me intrigued and the cover is eye catching, so I would definitely pick it up in a book shop.
CAROLYN’S THOUGHTS
Hmm. This is a tough one as I love everything about it except the model. Her pose is just awkward, I mean what’s her elbow doing sticking out like that?? She looks as though she’s uncomfortable with her photo being taken, all awkward and not sure how to stand. But I do love the lighting, the title font and colours and the decoration. It’s a shame the model isn’t sitting in a more relaxed pose, as this could have been a great cover.

Like Carolyn, I’m pretty torn over this cover. I like it. I like the colour, the font, the general feel, but there is just something that stops me loving it.
Maybe its because I’ve seen something similar before? I just don’t know

Exactly – the colours are great and I also think the general feel is really good. But that arm gets on my nerves LOL she just looks totally awkward and so my eyes just see that, rather than the overall image.
This is similar to a lot of UF covers out there, so it’s nothing new, but it is pretty. I just wish the model didn’t look so uncomfortable.

She looks like she could very easily topple odd those rocks too

It’s the left arm of the model, i think. It looks like it’s on backwards or something… Like her hand is turned too far or her elbow is bending the wrong way… but love the colors and always excited to see a new Jacqueline Carey book coming out.

Yes, that’s it. Looks wrong doesn’t it. I’ve never read anything by Carey as I’ve always seen her books as a bit too ‘fantasy’ for my taste, but Dark Currents has a more urban fantasy feel to it because of the cover, so maybe I’ll give this one a go.

Yes the cover is lovely isn’t it with the exception of the model’s pose. She also looks awkward on the rocks I think.
