Laura’s Top 10 Poolside Recommendations
![]()
Summer holiday time is nearly upon us, so if you’re looking for some great poolside reads to add to your suitcase or download onto your Kindle, here are a few recommendations.
As I’m writing this list, it would be so easy for me to list my favourite urban fantasy and paranormal romance series, but I’ve tried to rack my mind for some different and fun books for you to enjoy while working on your suntan! Ok, maybe just a couple of old favourites have sneaked in…
In no particular order:
1. Bounty Hunter Craziness
Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum Series
Enter the madcap, crazy world of Stephanie Plum. This series is worth reading just for the scene including Grandma and a Christmas turkey, I honestly nearly spat my drink out!

2. Darkly Seductive Men In Kilts
Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series
Everyone talks about how superb Macs and Barrons are in Moning’s Fever books. But her writing career began with her stunningly handsome and dark highlanders. There are without a doubt at the top of my must-read paranormal romance list.

3. Moving Contemporary & Historical Romance
PHANTOM WALTZ and ANNIE’S SONG by Catherine Anderson
I love Anderson’s writing. It’s so beautiful and moving. Her heroine’s usually have huge hurdles to overcome. PHANTOM WALTZ tells the story of a woman coming to terms with her life after an accident has left her in a wheelchair, it’s an amazing romance. ANNIE’S SONG is a historical romance about a misunderstood woman, believed by those around her to be mentally disabled. It’s a story about overcoming prejudice, but most of all true love.

4. Laugh-Out-Loud, Smoking Hot Dragons
G. A. Aiken’s Dragon Kin series
Dragons, chemistry so hot it will make you breathe fire, antics that literally make you laugh-out-loud and some great action scenes. This is a great series, I really must pick up the next book myself soon…

5. Sisterly Love
Sharon Sala’s Gambler’s Daughters Trilogy
This is a contemporary romance trilogy starring three sisters who are daughters of a washed up gambler. After his death each go their own ways, not knowing if they’ll see one another again, in order to find their fortune and man of their dreams. I’ve read them twice and they’re really great books.

6. You’re Going To Need Some Tissues
Love Story by Erich Segal
If you fancy a weepy, I would recommend a classic. Segal’s LOVE STORY is one guaranteed to pull on the heart strings.

7. Happy Endings In A Bottle
Three Sisters’ Island and Chesapeake Bay Saga by Nora Roberts
If you’ve never picked up a Nora Roberts book before, I would recommend you do so. Roberts’ writing is smooth and easy to read. Her characters are larger then life. And above all, she knows how to write happily ever after. These are my two of my favourites from her collections.

8. A Man Compelled To Obey Your Every Command!
FANTASY LOVER by Sherrilyn Kenyon
This book is the pre-cursor to Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series and is actually I think one of the best of them all. In a moment of madness Grace and a friend perform as spell to summon a love slave, little did she know that it would work, but that the man who arrives is actually desperately in need of her help.

9. Be Afraid To Go In The Water…
JAWS by Peter Benchley
Scare yourself silly and make yourself afraid to go into the water. It’s almost a classic and it goes without saying it’s way better than the film!

10. Chick-Lit To Make You Chuckle
CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET by Sophie Kinsella
I’ve never actually read Kinsella’s Shopaholic series, so CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET was my first Kinsella book and I loved it. The opening scene in the aeroplane when she thinks she’s dying…hil-a-rious! Honest to God, this book is funny, the writing is fresh and is perfect poolside material.

I hope you enjoy your holidays and that a few of my selections make their way into your suitcases!

I remember reading Fantasy Lover on Holiday in the US. It wasn’t the cool cover in the post, but a cheesy Mills and Boons type cover. What a great read is all I’ll say!!

No the one I have doesn’t have a funky cover either, although it not quite Mills & Boon either. It’s a great read, I loved it!

I had fun reading Janet Evanovich’s series for years (recent editions, not so much). I have a Sherrilyn Kenyon book on my list to read, i keep seeing her name pop up and decided to check her out.

Oh Kenyon’s books are great, but the earlier ones are better so I would recommend starting from the beginning of the Dark Hunter series.

Oh how I miss old school KMM – The Fever series left me cold I’m afraid. Her earlier books were just so much fun & are great re -reads .
Love La Nora – but my fave trilogy ( and the books that finally got me into her as a writer ) is the Enchanted trilogy … and her JD Robb’s are just literary crack
as far as I’m concerned !
Graet to see Fantasy Lover on the list . I love SK – but it’s time for that series to be put to bed …and when you see that quality of FL to her last Dark Hunter book …’nuff said

I actually really enjoyed her Fever series, but I think I may prefer her Highlander books.
I think I’ve read the Enchanted trilogy and I’m trying to remember which ones they are! Not picked up a JD Robb although I would like to.
Re: Kennyon I will see what the next book does as I do love the Darkhunters and I really want to resolution with the Nick situation….

A lot on your list I haven’t read. I think I would like to try the Highlander series by Moning, they sound fun.
Yes! to Jaws, wicked book. Not sure I would agree it’s better than the movie though as the movie ROCKS. Also it’s in my top 10 fav movies of all time, so maybe I’m a little biased.

Oh you should try the Highlander series, they are so good and get better too.
You’re right, I do love Jaws movie, such a classic and the soundtrack… But there is a lot more detail in the book.
