‘Debut Author Spotlight’ is a Saturday feature at Book Chick City. We will be showcasing a debut author each week from the genres of horror, urban fantasy and paranormal romance. We will give you all the relevant book information as well as an insight into the author.

Brigid Kemmerer was born in Omaha, Nebraska, though her parents quickly moved her all over the United States, from the desert in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the lakeside in Cleveland, Ohio, and several stops in between, eventually settling near Annapolis, Maryland. Brigid started writing in high school, and her first real “novel” was about four vampire brothers causing a ruckus in the suburbs. Those four brothers are the same boys living in the pages of The Elemental Series, so Brigid likes to say she’s had four teenage boys taking up space in her head for the last seventeen years.

While writing STORM, which focuses on the brother who has the power to control water, Brigid’s personal life ironically was plagued by water problems: Flooded basement. Leaking roof. Broken faucet causing water to spray under kitchen cabinets. One bay window was so damaged by water it almost fell off the side of the house. Considering SPARK, book 2 in the series, is about the brother who controls fire, Brigid is currently making sure all the smoke detectors in her house have batteries!

RELEASE DATE: April 2012 | PUBLISHER: Kensington | GENRE: Paranormal, Young Adult

One of the few vampires left on earth, as beautiful as she is powerful, Valerie has resisted her craving for human blood for years, just as she once hid her true gender. But the night she lays eyes on the most enticing man she’s ever seen, her appetite can no longer be denied. He radiates goodness and light–and searing sexual energy. Valerie must have him. Taste him. Consume him. For he is temptation–and he is her destiny. . .

Lance Soleil is a rugged war veteran who runs a homeless shelter in Portland. At first gaze, he knows what Valerie is–and wants her even more. But when he welcomes a pack of werewolves into his shelter, he attracts the attention of Valerie’s oldest rival–her bloodthirsty brother, Radu, who hopes to become the first vampire President of the United States. But first, she must risk their growing love by fully revealing herself–as the one and only Dracula. (Goodreads)

Hi Gwenda, welcome to Book Chick City. What’s STORM about?

Storm is about a girl named Becca who saves a boy in her class from an act of bullying, and learns that he and his brothers can control the elements of Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. Her act of kindness entangles her in their battle with those who want them dead.

Storm is full of action and adventure and of course, romance, but at its heart, it’s a story about family, and inner strength, and finding yourself.

Tell us a bit more about the hero/heroine in STORM.

Becca Chandler has a pretty rough time at school. She was once popular, but her ex-boyfriend spread a lot of rumors about her at school. Becca’s been beaten down a time or two, but I really admire her strength. She gets back up and keeps moving forward—and she doesn’t have an attitude about it.

Chris Merrick is the youngest of four brothers, and he’s struggling to learn how to control his element (water) before he hurts anyone. He’s desperate to figure out where he fits in his family, and in a broader scope, in the world around him, especially as he and his brothers are still dealing with their parents’ deaths.

How did you research STORM?

Most of Storm came straight out of my head, but I did speak with a local police officer to find out exactly how much teenagers could get away with.

Is STORM the first in a series or a stand alone?

It is the first in a series.

When is your favourite time to write?

I write whenever I can, but I’m most successful late at night.

Where is your favourite place to write?

Anywhere I can have a cup of coffee.

What was the last book you read and enjoyed?

Easy by Tammara Webber

Which authors do you admire?

There are so many! Veronica Rossi, Sophie Kinsella, Charlaine Harris, the list could go on for pages!

Describe yourself in five words

Ummm… wife, mother, writer, worker, coffee

What’s next?

Spark, the sequel to Storm, comes out on August 28th. Right now, I’m working on Spirit, the third book in the series, and a secret project with more of a fantasy slant.

Kensington are kindly offering a copy of Storm as a giveaway to one lucky winner. This giveaway is for UK/US/CANADA only and ends 28th September 2012
