Melanie’s Top 5 Super Creepy, Scary, Bad Guys

I LOVE Hallowe’en – it may or may not have something to do with the candy as it can’t be down to the ghosts, vamps and scary monsters that this day is famous for as I am almost 100% ‘fraidy cat. When it comes to reading however, I don’t mind being a bit scared.  I like my baddies to be on the creepy side rather than the big mangled faced monster side, but one of those has even made it into my top 5.

To ring in this All Hallow’s Eve here at BCC I thought I would share with you my top 5 super creepy, scary, bad guys. (Below contains some super creepy, scary spoilers)

The Hand’s Henchmen – The Edge series by Ilona Andrews

I have decided to start with a baddy (or baddies) that fit more into the ‘monster’ end of the scary spectrum that the unassuming sociopath end but thought I would still include them.  The Hand is the main antagonist in the Edge series and his henchmen have been ‘fused’ with other animals, other creatures and weaponry. They have been modified to be the ultimate fighters and each has their own unique ability. They are however, extremely grotesque, evil and totally gross me out with their tentacles, bone clawed fingers and scaled plated skin. I get the creeps and my skin crawls every time I have read the part of the novel where one of these characters turns up.

Geoffrey ae Magi – MASQUES by Patricia Briggs

Geoffrey ae Magi is a handsome but clinically, evil sorcerer. He manipulates everyone around him with his magic to love and adore him and only a very few see through his ‘charm’ magic.  His victims even look at him with a big smile of love and adoration as he slices their neck open to steal their magic.  He tortured, enslaved and impregnated a woman and then raised his own son to be a killer (although he comes out good in the end) and built his own zombie army from those who tried to defeat him. His penchant for torture and creepy good looks make him 100% scary.

The Heuters – FAIR GAME by Patricia Briggs

Travis, Les and Benedict are your archetypical creepy, evil family.  They may look respectable (well most of them) but underneath they are pure evil. They torture and rape their victims all before killing them and in the name of protecting the human race from the weres and fae.  They even try to use their clean cut image to get away with their crimes which gives them extra points on the creepy scale and verve at which they enjoy what they do gives them high points on the scary one.  This is one family I wouldn’t want as next door neighbours.

2

Bono – MAGIC BITES by Ilona Andrews

Bono was one of Ghastek’s journeyman, a pretty lady’s man and an upir. He is unspeakably evil, especially to women and likes to eat his victims. He has been breeding weird mixed animal creatures from some of his victims and is after Kate as his next ‘bride’. Bono and his mutant family fulfil all the characteristics for the perfect antagonist – evil, grotesque, scary and creepy.

1

Roland – Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews

Roland is the anomaly in my list of super creepy bad guys because he hasn’t turned even turned up yet in the series. We have only learned about him through Kate’s back story and the information so far has been fairly sketchy.  Roland is older than dirt, god-like, created the vampires, killed all his previous children and wants to kill Kate. Could anything creepier than the yet-unseen villain?  I don’t think so and the reason why he is at the top of my list.

I was a bit surprised when I looked down the list and saw that my all time favourites were from books by only two authors. It looks like Andrews and Briggs are the masters at creating super creepy, scary baddies.  So those are the baddies that have me hiding under the covers and looking under the bed.  Who are yours?

Sadly, I have never read any of these books, but I have a hard time believing that Bono could ever be evil. ;)

I’ve only read the first two books in the Kate Daniels series, and although I liked them, I didn’t love them. The other books/series I haven’t read yet.
