In the last few years I’ve noticed an increase in women writers within the world of zombie fiction. They seem to have taken the shuffling, putrid flesh-eaters to their hearts, and I will admit this makes me very happy. Formally a male dominated genre, I’m hoping more female authors take the plunge. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed many zombie novels written by men, (such as David Moody’s awesome Autumn series, and The Rising by Brian Keene), but there’s something about the way women write their zombie books that satisfies every part of me as a female reader and a zombie lover. I think the main aspects I’ve noticed is there’s a lot of heart in their zombie stories as well as the gore and horror (Rhiannon Frater’s As the World Dies series comes to mind). Many, although not all, of the zombie books I’ve read written by men contain lots of gore but little heart or an emotional aspect, women writers seem to be able to offer me both.

This may be down to the fact that most of the women writer’s in zombie fiction often have a female lead character. This means I can identify wholeheartedly with the character/s. That’s not to say I can’t connect to a male character, as I surely can when written well, but there’s definitely something about books written by women with a female lead. This is probably the same for guys reading male leads and preferring that over female leads – although I haven’t got any data to support this 😉

As a huge zombie fan I wanted to celebrate the rise of women writers in the field of zombie fiction – hence, THIRTY SHADES OF ZOMBIE. We have a fantastic line up – some authors you will know but others you may not, and  many are self-published – I wanted to give everyone a platform to show off their books!

Let’s talk about the name of the event and why we chose it. Basically, I have to say thanks to Gemma who came up with the name of the event. We were brainstorming and she just came up with it. It made me laugh and so I decided to go with it. However, the more I thought about the title the more it actually made a lot of sense. The event has nothing to do with the book, Fifty Shades of Grey, or with erotica, but I would say that just as in Fifty Shades of Grey it was eluding to all the different sides to its main character, Christian Grey, THIRTY SHADES OF ZOMBIE represents the different types of zombie there are in fiction (as well as film); from slow to fast, from conscious to brain dead, reanimated by virus or something else entirely. There are many different ways to make and be a zombie. The number 30 was chosen due to there being 30 days in November.

Lastly, I want to say thank you to Emily White Designs who made the banner. I gave her my brief and I think she did a fantastic job. So, thank you Emily!

There will be something posted daily with regards to this event, but in case you’re not a zombie fan we will also have our normal schedule of regular urban fantasy and paranormal romance reviews. But I hope you enjoy this month’s zombie fest and discover lots of fantastic new women authors in the world of zombie lit.

Having now watched The Walking Dead, Zombieland and Shaun of The Dead, I know what not to do! lol!

1st I would need to get myself armed. Being in the UK, this does mean that guns are pretty hard to come by. So it will have to be baseball or cricket bat.

2nd Going to have to commandeer a very fuel friendly car. Then I would pimp it out so that I could turn it into a zombie squishing machine.

3rd I would start looking for food in empty supermarkets and such. Tinned goods would be a must. I’d also look to get bottled water.

4th I would then try to find a military base. (They are usually ok in these sort of things and usually the government is behind it all)

So that’s my plan for now.

kelly beckett November 1, 2012 at 10:44 am

Get myself armed with whatever weapons I can find and get myself locked down in an empty supermarket getting myself supplies and a place to crash for a few nights while I contemplate my next move. Would try and get a cat somewhere along the way too as I have read a very good zombie tale where cats repel the zombies and keep them away so couldn’t hurt to try. Would probably try and get to a boat somewhere seeing as zombies can’t swim as far as i’m aware so may be safe on the water until I need more supplies. Would hope I could sail to somewhere where hopefully there would be a safe zone somewhere.

Ines November 1, 2012 at 10:44 am

Wait for the sun to rise, get myself a good big car and drive to the closest place where guns, water and dry food that can hold can be found. Get clothes that can’t be ripped easily, good boots, gas and lots of medications (for whatever might happen without ever coming close to a zombie).
Find some kind of a portable generator and possibly radio (who knows?) and try and decide on the likeliest place where people may have gathered to survive.
Learn how to shoot a gun!

Birgit November 1, 2012 at 11:38 am

Honestly? Find myself a relatively good looking chomp and get it over with.

Admit it – you didn’t expect that kind of answer! 😀

According to the M*A*S*H theme suicide is painless. Doubly so after the zombie apocalypse.

laura thomas November 1, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I would arm myself, then carefully scope out the neighborhood, looking for food, water and more weapons and better weapons!
Then I would get some transportation, look for survivors, careful when approaching them, not all are good people.
Then I would head to a less populated area and fight for my life! Whatever it may be, it is better than being dead.

Donna Barton November 1, 2012 at 11:42 pm

Total lock down!!!! Then hopefully finding a radio or something to help search for others!!!!

Victoria Zumbrum November 2, 2012 at 12:15 am

Look for food, water and alot of ammunition and shelter and then look for survivors.

Joani S November 2, 2012 at 1:30 am

Well…I’ll admit to being one of those “prepared” people, so I already have canned goods and the like stockpiled for an emergency, I own guns, I live in a small town. But I’d rather be out in the country somewhere. So maybe I’d pack what I could and take it to the mountains, or I’d just whole up here for a while. One thing i dont have a lot of is batteries, and I need someway to charge my kindle!!

Lissette Martinez November 2, 2012 at 2:28 am

Ok, first, I will grab anything I could use as a weapon. Or find one.
Then, I’ll have to go and search for food and boil some water, I have to be strong if I want to kill some mother… errr zombies on my way. I refuse to die without no fight!!!
And then, find a radio or something I can comunicate with others and know if there’s anyone near me.
This scene would be the worst nightmare, ever!!

jonica motoike November 2, 2012 at 2:42 am

grab weapons, find some place safe and secure, find food.

Rachel at theJeepDiva November 2, 2012 at 2:55 am

I would also locate weapons (guns & ammo as well as long knives or swords) and canned goods. Then I would find a place that is easily defendable to hole up. I would search for survivors also.

chris bails November 2, 2012 at 6:21 am

I would try to find some food and water, some shelter, any other living humans, and shelter. I would try to find something to read, reading always calms me.
Thanks for the kick butt giveaway.

Julie Picton November 2, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Find a Gun shop and then head to the nearest prison

Jessica Bronder November 2, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Get supplies; water, food, ammo, bleach, etc., find a fortified location, and get a ton of books. This is the perfect time to catch up on all of my reading.

Rachel November 3, 2012 at 2:50 am

I would steal a boat and a fishing line and a water tank. Unless if course these are the kind of zombies that can swim, then I’d head to the country. Lower population levels so less zombies to contend with, and also there would be easy access to food and seed to grow more food.

Solange November 3, 2012 at 6:49 am

Head to the nearest mall. They’ll have everything you’ll need all under one roof

Val Swift November 3, 2012 at 8:44 am

I would get to a supermarket, you can pretty much anything you need there and hopefully any other survivor would have the same idea!

Wrighty November 4, 2012 at 7:31 am

Wake up from the nightmare!! I read so many zombie books that I’m sure that’s what’s happening.

Thanks for your offer!

DeAnna Schultz November 4, 2012 at 9:36 pm

Well, after the initial shock and panic had come down some… I’d look for somewhere safe and some kind of weapon(s) I could find. If I managed to make it that far then I’d try to find food in a grocer or gas station.

Srivalli November 6, 2012 at 10:23 pm

First priority would be survival, food, shelter, water, etc.
Second find other survivors.
Find a mode of transport, maybe airplane to fly off to some uninhabited island or find a space ship and move to Mars.
Finally, find a cure for zombism.

Sarah November 8, 2012 at 6:25 am

Raid places for guns, food, and maybe gas. Then i would try to hole up somewhere relatively secluded and maybe try to get my own garden going for long-term ..and possibly a well. If i couldn’t get a radio to work, i MIGHT look for survivors if i could find enough ammo/food i could easily travel with.

Ashley snyder November 13, 2012 at 12:44 am

well, it sounds like im screwed, but let me try to come up with something. lol. I guess I need to find food and weapons, first of all. I do not want to be caught unawares and its no use avoiding the undead if im just going to starve to death. Then I need to find a way to purify water adn find a source for water. I need to find a base of operations (look at me trying to sound like i know what i am doing. lol) and hide out. I think it should be up high so i can see them coming. that’s all i have so far. i know i know. I wont last long. lol

Adam Robinson November 15, 2012 at 2:43 pm

I’m thinking get to my office. Locks on all doors, secure, no open windows or anything like. Large amount of land all securely fenced in. Several large supermarkets in the vicinity. Certainly a good, secure base of operations to continue the search for survivors

Robert Banning November 18, 2012 at 10:03 pm

Sadly, no plan. Will submit to the zombies. Why delay the inevitable?

LadyVampire November 23, 2012 at 9:49 am

My first plan of action in that situation is to get weapons and build a stronghold where the undead cannot get me. Then I stock my place with food and water.. taking time to purify it and make sure its safe. Then I go out on excursions looking for other survivors while I forage for more supplies plus watch the undead and get to know their strengths and weaknesses. After a while, I might start fortifying and stocking different safe houses so I can travel farther and still know I’m safe. I would keep searching and not give up.

Annabelle H November 23, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Hide, preferable deep underground with a lock down!

Denise Z November 24, 2012 at 6:47 am

I have to admit to turning into a bit of a hoarder with canned goods and non-perishables. Of course I tell myself they are on sale, but we all know I have watched The Walking Dead LOL I actually think I could last quite a while by my lonesome with all of my books and cans and of course we have a machete. Should the man-child be around at the time – he has a grand plan. Now of course I will have to look up methods to purify water – see what you have started, well I will tell my family it is all your fault . ;=D Thank you for the fun.

Peter Gilby November 26, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Find a secure Building with a non glazed door and high windows, it also must have a flat roof and be close to a wooded area.
weapons can be scavenged in the woods and the roof can be used to collect rain water this will be a great starting point to gather our selves collect supplies and think about moving onwards.

tamalyn roberts November 27, 2012 at 11:27 pm

grab the camping gear, radio, car phone charger, grab all my sharp knives, the garden hoe and rake etc. pack the kids up in the car, fill car with petrol to the top, add a can of petrol too for extra. stop at the local supermarket, grab water, tins of beans, matches, tea bags, powdered milk, batteries, etc drive to the mountains – about 20 mins drive, drive as far up snowdon as i can, get out and walk, set up camp in the most remote steep incline i can find,

tell the kids we are having a great camping holiday and pray it doesnt snow!

Sapphyria November 29, 2012 at 6:46 pm

I would probably have a complete meltdown first….then I’d put my big girl panties on and strategize. Weapons would be a must; anything that I can use to defend myself, be it guns or sports equipment. I’m not sure I’d lock myself in a zombie-proof home–it would be awfully hard to try and find any survivors. I’d carefully venture out and seek the company of those who don’t necessarily require my brains as sustenance.

bn100 November 29, 2012 at 9:35 pm

to look for food and shelter

mummy and her kids November 30, 2012 at 2:40 pm

I WOuld make sure that there is enough electricity plug in my Computer and show them the Thriller music video. While they are all staring at the screen. I would sneak away and try and run to better safety. There I would get out my Purifying water tablets that I have kept in my survival bag. My aim would be to get to a school, which has generators and a kitchen. I’m hoping fellow survivors would take the same tack and I would have more people to help me make weapons, and help find food.
