I’m very pleased to welcome author Kelly Keaton to the blog today. As Kelly Keaton she writes the young adult paranormal series, Gods & Monsters, and as Kelly Gay she is the author of the adult urban fantasy series Charlie Madigan. Her new self-published novel Embers in a Dark Frost was published in November and is part one in the Fire and Frost series.
Hi Kelly! Thanks for answering a few questions, it’s great to have you on the blog at last!
Thanks for having me!
What was your first ever job – and were you any good at it?
I worked in the ice cream parlor of a family style restaurant up the road from my house, and I washed dishes there as well. I was awesome.
If an MP3 player could only hold 3 tunes, which tunes would you choose?
Oh boy. That one’s hard. I think my answer would differ every day, but today I’d choose, Untitled by Simple Plan. Viva La Vida by Cold Play. Secrets by One Republic.
Who was your teenage pin-up?
Totally dating myself here – go 80’s & 90’s! Rob Lowe and The Cure’s Robert Smith.
What’s your favourite book of all time?
Walter Farley’s The Black Stallion
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
It’s a saying that has stuck with me for a long time: just when the catepillar thought the world was over, she became a butterfly. It reminds that there’s always an end in sight, always a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes you have to wait a little while, but eventually things will get better.
What would be your chosen superpower?
What would your top tip be for getting published?
Keep writing. Finish one project and start on another. You need to have content, additional manuscripts to submit. You might sell on the first, but you might also sell on the fifth. So basically, don’t put all of your eggs into on basket.
What would you choose as your last supper ever?
Filet mignon, French fries, Caesar salad, and pumpkin cheesecake.
Who has been the most influential person in your life?
It’s hard to pick one. My mom and grandmother. My kids. They influence everything, LOL.
When you’re not writing what do you like to do?
Read. Catch up on movies. Hang out at the barn with my mare who happens to be six months pregnant right now. I raised her from 3 months to 4 yrs, then had to sell her (which was devastating). Fast forward twelve years later, me finding her again, buying her and bringing her home where she belongs. Now we’re expecting a little one in April!
What was the last film you saw and did you like it?
This Means War. Of course I liked it – Tom Hardy was in it!!
If you weren’t a writer what would you be doing?
Hmm. Probably designing websites and covers, or teaching ancient history somewhere, or running my own horse boarding barn.
Marmite: love it or hate it?
Never had it.
If you could travel back in time, where would you go?
Ancient Egypt. No Greece. No Sumeria. Ahhhh! I have decision-making issues. Then, there’s medieval Scotland and England…
Finish this sentence: Writing is the greatest job in the world because…
I get to create entire worlds, and then I get to take readers there and show them around. I get to make something that allows others to take a break from reality for a little while. And that’s just really, really cool.
