SLASHBACK (Cal Leandros series #8) | RELEASE DATE: March 2013 | PUBLISHER: Penguin
GENRE: Urban Fantasy | ARTIST: Unknown
I stopped and let them circle me, first because it was intriguing and, second, because, honestly, what could they do? Only knives, but all armed, and that made them even more interesting. Interesting. Fun. Playtime… Taking on bloodthirsty supernatural monsters is how Caliban and Niko Leandros make a living. But years ago—before they became a force to be reckoned with—the brothers were almost victims of a very human serial killer. Almost.
Unfortunately for them, that particular depraved killer was working as apprentice to a creature far more malevolent—the legendary Spring-heeled Jack. He’s just hit town. He hasn’t forgotten what the Leandros brothers did to his murderous protégé. He hasn’t forgotten what they owe him. And now they are going to pay… and pay… and pay… (Goodreads)
LAURA’S THOUGHTS
The first thing I really like, and as you know is a bug bear of mine, is how well it fits in with the rest of the series. They would look rather super on your bookshelves! The cover is very masculine and could easily be a crime/sci-fi novel, as an urban fantasy one. The font is great, as is the injection of lime in the design. I think the guy’s haircut is absolutely awful, but I guess that’s not his fault
The urban background and the gun in his hand definitely grab your attention. It’s not the best cover I’ve ever seen, but it’s not too bad either.
GEMMA’S THOUGHTS
Like Laura, I agree that this cover fits in with the rest of the series. This also bugs the heck out of me when you start buying one style of book cover, only for the publishers to change it. I end up rebuying the covers so they all match (COVER OCD ALERT!) Onto the actual cover, I like the overall look of it and think it has a gritty urban feel to it. The model does look a bit “soft” for the image what is trying to be portrayed. I especially don’t like how his eyes don’t seem to match. I’m not sure if this is because he is otherworldly or if it’s a blip on with the light/shade affect. I would probably glance at the cover, but I’m not sure I would pick it up as it looks more like a Jason Bourne type book
