DARKNESS UNMASKED (Dark Angels #5) | RELEASE DATE: June 2013
PUBLISHER: Piatkus | GENRE: Urban Fantasy | ARTIST: Unknown
The sexy, exciting, suspenseful adventures continue in New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur’s Dark Angels series, starring Risa Jones, a half-Aedh/half-werewolf. She can speak to the souls of the dying and the dead, and can see Reapers, the collectors of souls.
Shortly after her fight on the astral plane, Risa receives a phone call from Madeline Hunter, the leader of the vampire council, ordering her to investigate the death of Hunter’s close friend and lover – Wolfgang Schmidt. His body has been discovered wrapped in a web-like substance and has been completely drained. As the body count continues to grow, Risa must summon her gifts to find the dark spirit before it strikes again. Meanwhile, as the search for the keys that keep the gate to Hell closed grows more intense, Risa begins to unravel mysteries that will have startling consequences for her. (Goodreads)
Ooh I like it! It’s sexy and vibrant, I like the fact they have used the same model for every book in the series. I’m always a fan of red and black and that’s no exception here, I also like the lights in the background. I’ve not read the series to know if the design matches, but the whole series looks super slick, and this is a great addition. This one is waaaay better than the US one, which looks a bit ghastly if I’m honest.
Although I like the cover, I don’t love it. For some reason the model almost looks like a cardboard cut out against the background. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the composition of the cover and I like how she is looking off screen, but it just doesn’t seem to gel. I do agree with Laura that it’s much better than the US cover. It has a much more gritty feel and I like how it doesn’t make it obvious that she is an Angel. I also like how they have continued with the theme of the previous books. It sooths my OCD cover obsession.

The question is, who will be that sacrifice? (Goodreads)
Hmm, I’m a bit on the fence with this one. It matches the theme of the series, but I think it might be the worst of the bunch. Mustard yellow is one of my least favourite colours, and I think it looks a touch drab here. I do like the watery style fonts and that the model looks like she’s under water. But… once again the UK seriously outshines the US one, what is going on with it? Looks like a strange 70s science fiction film.
I agree completly with Laura on this. What on earth is up with that colour? It looks like what happens when you eat a dodgy curry. I’m not sure if they have used the same model as the previous books, but I do like the water theme. If I cover up the top half of the book with that yucky colour, I rather like it. It’s very haunting and the fact that model is staring straight at you is striking. I haven’t read this series yet, so don’t know if it ties up with the story. Though I have to admit, this is 100 times better than the US one, which looks like it has been done on a bargain basement budget.
