Kerry Schafer was born and raised in Canada*, moved back and forth across the border a number of times, and finally settled on a compromise. She now lives in Washington state, but within an hour’s drive of her home and native land. Her childhood book collection traveled with her through all of those moves and she is still acquiring books and bookshelves. During her lifetime she has worked as a lumber piler, an OB nurse, a secretary, and a substitute teacher, among other things. No matter where she was living or what she was doing, she was creating writing time. Currently she balances writing and family with her work as a mental health counselor. *And yes, she does sometimes say ‘eh?’ but never, ever ‘aboot.’
RELEASE DATE: Jan 2013 | PUBLISHER: Ace Books | GENRE: Urban Fantasy
Vivian Maylor can’t sleep. Maybe it’s because she just broke up with her boyfriend and moved to a new town, or it could be the stress of her new job at the hospital. But perhaps it’s because her dreams have started to bleed through into her waking hours.
All of her life Vivian has rejected her mother’s insane ramblings about Dreamworlds for concrete science and fact, until an emergency room patient ranting about dragons spontaneously combusts before her eyes—forcing Viv to consider the idea that her visions of mythical beasts might be real. And when a chance encounter leads her to a man she knows only from her dreams, Vivian finds herself falling into a world that seems strange and familiar all at once—a world where the line between dream and reality is hard to determine, and hard to control…
What is BETWEEN about?
Between is about a woman who prides herself on a factual and scientific approach to life, only to be confronted with dreams spilling over into the waking world. The book falls into the category of what I think of as “coming into power” stories. If Vivian wants to save the world and the people she loves, she will have to accept who and what she is. That is as much of a battle for her as fighting the dragons and the sorceress.
Tell us a bit more about the hero/heroine in BETWEEN…
Vivian works as an Emergency Room doctor in a small town. She loves her job, but other things in her life are a bit of a mess. She’s just called things off with her boyfriend and he isn’t responding well to the rejection. Her mother is mentally unstable and Vivian has been taking care of her since early childhood. Her dreams are getting out of control. But it’s all working, sort of, until one of her young ER patients burns from the inside out after saying something about dragons. Her mother goes missing. A strange woman shows up in her apartment. And Vivian is the only one who can fix things.
How did you research BETWEEN?
In the scene that I think of as Spontaneous Combustion in the ER, I needed to know what the treatment would be for a serious burn victim. My search began with the Almighty Google and ended with help and input from a wonderful Emergency Room nurse who helped me get the details straight.
Is BETWEEN the first in a series or a stand alone novel?
Between is the first of a planned Trilogy.
When is your favourite time to write?
I love days where I can start writing at about 8 am, and keep writing on and off throughout the whole day. Unfortunately, this is rare, and I end up writing during any available space of time, including during lunch breaks at my day job.
Where is your favourite place to write?
At my dining room table, looking out the window at trees and sky and the deer and wild turkeys hanging around the house. But only when the house is empty and quiet, which again is rare. My second favorite place to write is at a local cafe, where the Americanos are perfect and the wireless is fast and free.
What was the last book you enjoyed and why?
I don’t read a book if I don’t enjoy it – life is too short! The last book I read is called THE GRILS’ GUIDE TO LOVE AND SUPPER CLUBS, by Dana Bate. This book debuts the week after BETWEEN, and I was lucky enough to score an advanced copy. I loved the voice and the mix of humor with challenging life experiences. Also, a nice touch of romance and a character learning to be the self she was meant to be.
Which authors do you admire?
That is an interesting question – the authors I admire are not necessarily the same as the ones whose books I most love to read. In fact, a lot of the authors I most admire aren’t even published yet. I admire them because they keep writing anyway, creating stories that may not ever make it out into the big wide world. That takes courage and tenacity.
Describe yourself in five words.
Intuitive, funny, driven, idealistic, warped
The second of the Books of the Between is with my editor now. I’ve called it Wakeworld, but I’m not sure yet whether that will stick. And I’ve started work on Book Three. So if you enjoy BETWEEN, good news – there will be more books coming up!
