FEARSOME DREAMER (Fearsome Dreamer #1) | RELEASE DATE: September 2013
PUBLISHER: Hot Key Books | GENRE: Fantasy | ARTIST: Unknown
There is a world where gods you’ve never heard of have wound themselves into hearts, and choice has led its history down a different path. This is a world where France made a small, downtrodden island called England part of its vast and bloated empire. There are people here who can cross a thousand miles with their minds. There are rarer people still who can move between continents in the blink of an eye. These people are dangerous. And wanted. Desperately wanted.
Apprentice hedgewitch Vela Rue knows that she is destined for more. She knows being whisked off from a dull country life to a city full of mystery and intrigue is meant to be. She knows she has something her government wants, a talent so rare and precious and new that they will do anything to train her in it. But she doesn’t know that she is being lied to. She doesn’t know that the man teaching her about her talent is in love with her, and considered by some to be the most dangerous man alive. So she will learn. She will learn how to betray everyone around her for empty promises, how to choose the wrong man to trust, and just how real her dreams can be… (Author’s Website)
Very interesting cover, quite graphic novel-esque. I like it because it’s quirky and just a little bit different. The sky looks quite magnificent behind the heroine, all swirly and bold and the moon centred behind her head. I’m also intrigued why she is clutching a sheet around her, or is it a flag? I certainly would pick this up and want to know more.
I love the graphic novel style of this cover, although I do feel it looks a tad too animated for an adult book cover, as it could just as easily find a home amongst the children’s section in a book store. The background is very intriguing, and like Laura I love the look of the sky and the swirling clouds. The architecture looks like Trafalgar Square, like a broken Nelson’s Column, so I want to know more about why this woman is standing in ruins! At first glance I though she was merely holding a sheet around herself, but now Laura has pointed it out, it really does look like a French flag, so more intrigue there. As for the woman herself, I think she has a really fierce look in her eyes, and the way she’s holding that flag makes it seem as if she could easily fling it off and be wearing a kick-ass costume underneath!

Kato Vorsok is a man deserted by his god. A failed hero living in exile, he wants nothing to do with his old life. Until the night he encounters a wounded mourning cloak—a demon that can walk through walls, dissolve into mist, and spear a man’s heart with a fingernail. She calls him by name. She knows his past. She needs his help. And she is his key to redemption. (Goodreads)
Love, love, love this cover! I don’t think I’ve seen such a beautiful cover for a long time and I love everything about it. It’s definitely the kind of cover I would see in a book store and instantly be drawn to. The model’s stance is very clever as it manages to look elegant and yet contorted at the same time with those crossed arms and bent legs, and I like how her hair is blowing across her face. The gothic fog effects are just as beautiful, especially as her cloak dissolves into the mist, and the use of the black butterflies just adds that extra something to make you go ‘wow’. I even love the text of this cover, as the gold colouring contrasts well with the black, and I love the addition swirls beneath the author’s name and the cross detailing on the ‘M’ of Mourning.
Ooh this is quite stunning, dark, gothic and atmospheric. I love how her dress blends into the darkness and the butterflies emerging from it. The font it great, a nice touch of the ‘M’ having a cross built into it. The only thing I would change is her hair being across her face so much, I just want to sweep in back!
