Oh I do love Jeaniene Frost’s writing. She knows how to write about love and relationships and some serious edge of your seat action scenes. Twice Tempted was even better than Once Burned, the first book in the series. Leila and Vlad are funny, but more importantly seriously sexy and argue worse than Bones and Cat (the hero/heroine from Frost’s Night Huntress series) and that’s saying something.
As Twice Tempted begins, Vlad and Leila are having relationship issues, with Vlad unable to give Leila everything she needs, Leila knows, despite her feelings for him, she has to leave. While you know for the series to work they will have to come back together at some point, Frost is also not afraid to put her readers through the mill a bit in order for us to get our much needed resolution, and through the mill I did go. But oh my, it was worth it.
Leila seems to be unable to go anywhere without a murder plot conspiring against and just as she’s starting to rebuild her life, things get decidedly explosive. Her growing control over electrical powers means that she’s is now a more formidable foe, but still no match for a vampire and things get out of control pretty fast. Enter Vlad once again and of course that means plenty of fireworks in more ways than one.
I don’t think there’s one part of this book I would criticise. I could barely put it down and read it in less than a day. Apart from the main murder plot and the fantastic romance, in addition we also learn more about Vlad’s past as his more ruthless side, in all of its torso spearing and torturing glory. There’s a reason men feared Vlad and it was interesting to see how Leila managed this and came to terms with the more brutal side of him.
The romance took a few unexpected twists and turns, but I loved every minute of it. It gave enough of a conclusion but also left a few threads for the story to grow and develop in future books. Who knew such a vicious, ruthless and notorious vampire could also be a totally breathtaking lover and partner? I think Cat and Bones will always have a very coveted space in my heart as I read their stories first, but Vlad and Leila are now coming a very close second.
Fans of Frost’s other works will enjoy guest appearances from Mencheres and Cat. I particularly enjoyed Cat’s description as having ‘Barbie-doll perfect looks’, I’d always viewed Cat as pretty, but perhaps not that pretty. But the scene made me smile never the less. It would have been nice to see a little bit of Bones too, but alas I didn’t manage to get an extra Bones fix in this book.
I can’t really talk about some of the bigger plot developments without giving too much away. But Twice Tempted is definitely a game changer for Leila and Vlad. I promise you, if you loved Once Burned then you won’t be sorry, this is a cracker of a book.
This is a really great book, but I’ve yet to read one of Jeaniene Frost’s books that isn’t. If you haven’t got around to picking up any of her books yet I would heartily urge you to do so. She has great a magnificent vampiric world in her Night Huntress books and then used this world to create an equally sexy and thrilling series with Leila and Vlad. Twice Tempted gave me the conclusion I longed for in Once Burned, but even better leaves enough open to show that there will be more books in the series.
