Carolyn’s Favourite Gay Movies

Favourite Gay Movies

I have watched a lot of movies in my time, and over the years my tastes have changed with regards to the genres I like. In the past year I have found gay cinema and have become obsessed. What I’ve come to realise is although there is a much smaller pool of movies to choose from, they are as diverse as mainstream films, meaning you will find the crap as well as the amazing. There are also different genres under the gay cinema umbrella; thriller, rom com, erotic, romantic, historical, thought provoking; there’s something for everyone….

If you are a regular reader of my Friday Film Feature, you will have no doubt noticed that I have a soft spot for comic book movies. This year looks to be a bumper year for the genre and first out of the gate is Iron Man 3. The film takes place a few months after the events in last years The Avengers (or as it was retitled as The Avengers Assemble for some strange reason in the UK). Tony is back to civilian life and he is finding it…

Now to one of THE most anticipated movies of the year, The Dark Night Rises. And film fans, it has been worth the wait. Get ready for a movie that finishes off one of the best superhero series we have seen in recent years. Our film begins eight years to the day, since the tragic events that were the end of The Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne has become a recluse, hiding in Wayne Manor while nursing a broken heart and damaged body. Gotham seems to be at peace, with the…

The Avengers Assemble

Comic book movies are always very much hit and miss. For every Dark Knight Rises, we have a Batman and Robin. For every Iron Man, we have The Phantom. And to have an ensemble comic book movie, where three out of the four well known characters have had successful movies on their own, it takes one brave and formidable man (or woman) to put together a movie that doesn’t suck. Enter the geek god himself, Joss Whedon. He is the real life Nick Fury, who has managed to do the…

Cabin in the Woods

The best way to experience The Cabin in the Woods is to go in completely blind. Avoid the trailer, in fact why are you reading this review anyway? Ah, because you want to know what the buzz is all about. Well, the brains behind this gem of a movie are two names that are instantly recognisable to all fans of genre TV and movies. The film is written by the god-like genius Joss Whedon (Angel, Dollhouse, Buffy, Firefly, Serenity) and his long time friend Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, Lost, Alias, Angel, Buffy)….

Shaun of the Dead

I’ve watched Shaun of the Dead so many times. It’s a pretty rare combination of horror and comedy done well. As with American Werewolf in London, Shaun of the Dead can swing from the horrific and gruesome to laugh-out-loud funny – and I mean proper laugh out loud funny. The acting is top notch and the comedic timing and chemistry between the main actors Simon Pegg (Shaun) and Nick Frost (Ed) is just brilliant. It begins with Shaun and his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) having a discussion about where their relationship is…
